The Role of Market Orientation in Incumbent Firm’s Defense Against Disruptive Innovations

This bachelor’s thesis builds on the phenomenon of disruptive innovation and the business philosophy of market orientation. More specifically, it strives to study how market orientation could help incumbent companies to defend against disruptive innovations (i.e. avoid losing market share disruptive competitors). The main research methods are literature reviews as well as qualitative meta-analysis, which both help in the definition and discussion of the relevant concepts, such as market orientation and disruptive innovation. Based on the literature of innovation management and management practice research streams I identified four components which are crucial to incumbent’s defense against disruptive innovations: (1) early recognition of potential disruptions, (2) response strategy formulation, (3) response strategy implementation, (4) innovation ability. Subsequently, these items are cross analyzed with the existing literature of marketing orientation, resulting in a confirmation of marketing orientation’s positive effect on three of the components, namely 1, 3, and 4. The findings are significant, as they open a novel instance of market orientation’s indirect performance benefits. In addition, the thesis contributed to the disruptive innovation research by suggesting a broader approach to disruptive innovation respondin

The High Cost of Mandatory Consumer Arbitration

    Get PDF
This article critically examines a sampling of arbitration agreements and the rules of the major arbitration service providers and concludes that the cost of arbitration is often prohibitively high, either because consumers simply cannot afford the fees attendant to filing and prosecuting a claim or because the costs of bringing a claim outweigh the benefits of any potential remedies

Core Needle Biopsy Enhances the Activity of the CCL2/CCR2 Pathway in the Microenvironment of Invasive Breast Cancer

    Get PDF
The use of core needle biopsy (CNB) as a means to verify malignancy preoperatively is a paradigm in current breast cancer care, and the risk of enhancing tumor development by this procedure has been considered insignificant. Experimental work in mice has shown preoperative biopsies to increase tumor supportive elements in the microenvironment, whereas, in humans, the impact of CNB on the host’s immunologic response has not been investigated. In this pilot study, we compared the expression of CCL2/CCR2 pathway components at the protein level in samples from CNBs to those from the corresponding resected tumors from 52 patients with primary breast cancer. We found an increased expression of CD163, CD14 and CCR2 in monocytes/macrophages and a slight decrease of CCL2 in the malignant epithelium in the tumors after the biopsy. The increased infiltration of immunosuppressive monocytes/macrophages and the decreased tumor cell CCL2 expression, presumably due to the CCR2 availability-dependent CCL2 internalization, suggest that CNB enhances the activity of the CCL2/CCR2 pathway, and this finding warrants confirmatory examination. The switch in the context-dependent role of CCL2 on the polarization of macrophages may lead to increased tumor supportive function both locally and in the peripheral immune machinery. The future directions in breast cancer should include early interventions to support the tumor surveillance of the host

Map to Service-Oriented Business and IT: A Stratified Approach

    Get PDF
To succeed in the current business environment, organizations need to be innovative, flexible and faster in the face of uncertainty, complexity and change. As the perspective has moved from products to services, enterprises have componentized their structures to operate in the newly emerging collaborative ecosystems. Service-oriented information technology approaches have proven to be well suited to this business transformation. Increasingly, IT capabilities also drive business strategy. To create a ‘big picture’ that brings together different viewpoints and their relations and helps positioning and comparing various approaches to service systems, we put forth a new artifact, the Map to Service-Oriented Business and IT. The map uses a layered approach and is divided to four viewpoints along two dimensions: business-IT continuum and distinction between internal and external aspects. The layering is grounded in the Stratified Systems Theory, a cognitively motivated theory on organizations

    Miten edistää lapsen kehitystä?

    Get PDF
Vertaisarvioitu. English summary• Lapsen kehitykseen vaikuttavat geneettiset, epigeneettiset ja ympäristötekijät. Peer reviewe
