Design Credo: The making of design tools as a personal theory building process

Design tools, just like any design objects, can be examined from the angle of their making, and this viewpoint can be used for exploring designing itself. This thesis presents one way to build tools for reflecting on design approach and developing skills and beliefs. Three different angles are opened to the idea of design tools, explored and presented through three artefacts. The author has engaged with both computer tools and drawing approaches, alternating between insight that emerges from the works and the literature which supplies keys for interpreting the artefacts. The tools arise from personal beliefs, fuelled by ideologies and a broader world view. Cultivating a personal belief, a design credo, becomes an integral part of understanding the role of tools in the designer’s exploration.Muotoilun välineitä, kuten muitakin suunniteltuja esineitä, voidaan tarkastella niiden rakentamisen kautta. Tässä väitöskirjassa tätä näkökulmaa hyödynnetään itse muotoilutoiminnan avaamiseen. Työkalujen rakentaminen on yksi keino käsitteellistää ja kehittää omia suunnittelutaitoja, lähestymistapoja ja uskomuksia. Väitöksen kolme työkaluprojektia avaavat erilaisia kulmia muotoiluvälineajatteluun. Tekijä on lähestynyt aihetta sekä rakentamalla tietokoneohjelmia että kehittänyt piirtämistekniikkaansa vuoropuhelussa kirjallisuudesta nousevan käsitteistön kanssa. Presidentti Charles de Gaulle pyrki 1960-luvulla rakentamaan Ranskasta itsenäistä kansainvälistä toimijaa blokkiajattelun aikaisessa maailmassa. Se rakensi rohkeasti suhteita Neuvostoliittoon ja Itä-Eurooppaan päin ja pyrki heikentämään Yhdysvaltojen valta-asemaa Euroopassa. Monella Ranskan toimella voidaan olettaa olleen vaikutuksia myös Suomeen. De Gaulle vastusti Ison-Britannian liittymistä EEC:hen ja kaksi kertaa hän esti maan liittymiseen järjestöön. Lisäksi Ranska erosi Naton komentojärjestelmästä vuonna 1966 sekä vastusti MLF-hanketta, jonka pyrkimyksenä oli luoda monenkeskiset ydinasevoimat Euroopassa. Työ sijoittuu laajemmin Suomen kylmän sodan aikaisen ulkopolitiikan tutkimukseen. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on tarkastella sitä miten Suomen ulkopoliittinen johto otti Ranskan huomioon sen ulkopoliittisissa arvioissa ja päätöksenteossa ja sitä kautta tarkastella Ranskan vaikutusta Suomeen vuosina 1962–1969. Suomen 1960-luvun aikaista ulkopolitiikkaa on tutkittu runsaasti, mutta erityisesti Suomen ja Ranskan suhteita ja Ranskan vaikutusta Suomeen ei ole juuri tutkittu. Tutkimuksen päälähdeaineiston muodostavat Urho Kekkosen ja Ahti Karjalaisen arkistokokoelmat sekä ulkoasiainministeriön arkistossa sijaitsevat Pariisin-suurlähetystön raportit vuosilta 1962–1969. Tutkimuksen kannalta tärkeää tutkimuskirjallisuutta edustavat mm. Juhani Suomen, Osmo Apusen, Max Jakobsonin ja Seppo Hentilän teokset. Tarkastelen kaksiosaista tutkimuskysymystäni kolmen tason kautta, jotka nousevat esille läpikäydystä aineistosta. Ensimmäisen tason muodostavat Suomen ja Ranskan kahdenväliset suhteet, johon kuuluu myös presidentti Urho Kekkosen ja de Gaullen suhde. Toisen tason muodostaa Ranskan toiminta Euroopan taloudellisessa integraatiossa. Kolmannen tason muodostaa Ranskan kansainvälinen toiminta kylmän sodan maailmassa. Tutkimuksen yksi tuloksista on se, että Ranskan ulkopolitiikkaa seurattiin Suomessa, mutta sitä ei suoranaisesti otettu huomioon päätöksenteossa joitain poikkeuksia lukuun ottamatta. Konkreettisimmin Ranska vaikutti Suomeen sen EEC-politiikan kautta. Pitämällä Ison-Britannian ulkona EEC:stä, se varmisti Suomelle suotuisten kauppapoliittisten edellytysten säilymisen Länsi-Euroopassa. Tutkimuksen toinen tulos on se, että EEC:n laajentumista lukuun ottamatta Ranskan vaikutus Suomeen oli pitkälti epäsuoraa. Ranskan toimilla oli sekä myönteisiä että kielteisiä vaikutuksia Suomen ulkopoliittisiin toimintaedellytyksiin. Esimerkiksi MLF-hankkeen vastustaminen sekä suhteiden rakentaminen sosialistisen blokin kanssa nähtiin myönteisenä asiana Suomessa. Toisaalta Ranskan ja Saksan liittotasavallan yhteistyö 1960-luvun alussa kiristi jännitystä Euroopassa, mihin kiinnitettiin huomiota myös Suomessa. Kaiken kaikkiaan de Gaullen politiikka nähtiin Suomesta käsin myönteisenä asiana. Sen uskottiin lieventävän jännitystä ja sitä kautta tarjoavan Suomelle enemmän liikkumavaraa ulkopolitiikassa

Types of partly configurable products in high-variety, low-volume context

Research on partly configurable products is emerging. Key concepts of these types of products have been scarcely synthetized, as definitions of partly configurable products in high-variety, low-volume industrial context are limited. These products incorporate modular and integral designs, which calls for an overview on the relations of key concepts defining them. The problem is approached through an exploratory literature review, which allowed an overview of the key concepts over product modularity and partly configurable products. Those were synthetized further define partly configurable products. As a result, four types of partly configurable products are given. This review supports vantage over the key concepts and their relations for reuse with partly configurable products in academia. For practitioners the presented attributes and given examples support in understanding of concepts and their relations with partly configurable products.Peer reviewe

The Interplay of Thematic and Ludological Elements in Western-Themed Games

The Wild West has been productized and remediated a number of times over the last hundred of years – and even earlier than that. Computer and video games are a relative newcomer in this string of remediations, distilling the essential elements of the Western even further into archetypal scenes, characters and modes of play. Expanding on our previous works on genres, we study a colorful selection of Western-themed games, 31 in total, with the aim to reveal how a firmly established and codified theme affects gameplay. A well-established theme, such as the Western, manifests itself at very different depths based on the kind of game we are dealing with – at minimum, it acts as an artificial surface that does not affect the gameplay at all. At the other end of the spectrum, the theme affects all the aspects of a game, ranging from its audiovisual presentation to the narrative and the actions available to the player.</div

PETSCII is the built-in character set used on 8-bit Commodore computers, such as the PET, C-64 and Plus/4. The character set and the BASIC environment provided an entry point to rudimentary graphic editing for a generation of hobbyists. Over the years PETSCII has been used for a variety of creative purposes: for example games, demos, telecommunications, videos, books and fine art have been created using the graphical symbols. Through the analysis of existing art works and our own hands-on project – a graphics editor – we dig deeper into the specific properties of the character set. In this article we show how the fixed symbols set the frame for what is possible and how, on the other hand, they provide grounds for creative experimentation, display of skill and recognizable styles.</p

HVLV engineering with module system(s), eto and lean design - study on practitioner information needs

This research elaborates the engineering design of high value low volume (HVLV) artefacts (aka Capital goods, investment goods). Our goal is to describe what information needs the practitioners have when doing sales engineering and engineering in HVLV projects. The research approach uses Design Research Methodology with four company cases. Our findings are that engineering design of HVLV artefacts reuses several module systems, module libraries, technology catalogues, engineering-to-order and variety of design support systems, configurators, design guidelines, parametric models and lean-based design reasoning patterns etc. This poses major challenges for the engineers; how to use all relevant information and how to find it from different IT-systems. This study indicates that in HVLV context such engineering strategy is required, which guides and drives tactical and operational engineering decisions not only within a project delivery but across project deliveries. Operative and tactical engineering is done during the delivery project and value capture is not achieved in full potential if the engineering strategy is neglected or overruled. This is challenge for current modularisation and ETO-methods and tools.Peer reviewe

Seismicity during and after stimulation of a 6.1 km deep enhanced geothermal system in Helsinki, Finland

In this study, we present a high-resolution dataset of seismicity framing the stimulation campaign of a 6.1 km deep Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS) in Helsinki suburban area and discuss the complexity of fracture network development. Within St1 Deep Heat project, 18 160 m3 of water was injected over 49 days in summer 2018. The seismicity was monitored by a seismic network of near-surface borehole sensors framing the EGS site in combination with a multi-level geophone array located at ≥ 2 km depth. We expand the original catalog of Kwiatek et al. (2019) and provide the community with the dataset including detected seismic events and earthquakes that occurred two month after the end of injection, totalling to 61 163 events. We relocated events of the catalog with sufficient number of available phase onsets and moment magnitudes between Mw −0.7 and Mw 1.9 using the double-difference technique and a new velocity model derived from a post-stimulation vertical seismic profiling campaign. The analysis of the fault network development at reservoir depth of 4.5–7 km is one primary focus of this study. To achieve this, we investigate 191 focal mechanisms of the induced seismicity using cross-correlation based technique. Our results indicate that seismicity occurred in three spatially separated clusters centered around the injection well. We observe a spatio-temporal migration of the seismicity during the stimulation starting from the injection well in northwest (NW) – southeast (SE) direction and in northeast (NE) direction towards greater depth. The spatial evolution of the cumulative seismic moment, the distribution of events with Mw ≥ 1 and the fault plane orientations of focal mechanisms indicate an active network of at least three NW–SE to NNW-SSE orientated permeable zones which is interpreted to be responsible for migration of seismic activity away from the injection well. Fault plane solutions of the best-constrained focal mechanisms as well as results for the local stress field orientation indicate a reverse faulting regime and suggest that seismic slip occurred on a sub-parallel network of pre-existing weak fractures favorably oriented with the stress field, striking NNW-SEE with a dip of 45° ENE, parallel to the injection well.Peer reviewe

Ruoan tärkeimmät vierasaineet Suomessa – terveysriskit ja tiedonpuutteet

Tämän työn tarkoituksena oli asettaa suomalaisen kuluttajan kannalta tärkeysjärjestykseen ne elintarvikkeiden vierasaineet, joiden pitoisuuksia valvotaan asetuksen (EY) N:o 1881/2006 nojalla tai jotka mainitaan Euroopan Komission monitorointisuosituksissa. Tärkeysjärjestys määräytyi aineen aiheuttaman terveyshaitan vakavuuden ja suurkuluttajalle koituvan riskin suuruuden perusteella. Tärkeimmiksi arvioitiin syöpävaaralliset aineet (ympäristömyrkyt, homemyrkyt tai prosessoinnissa syntyvät aineet), joille altistutaan siinä määrin, että syöpien lisääntyminen väestössä on todennäköistä. Kerta-annoksella haitallisista vierasaineista tärkeimmät olivat soluhengityksen salpaavat tai sydämen lyöntitiheyttä hidastavat vierasaineet, joille altistuminen saattaisi pahimmillaan johtaa riskiryhmään kuuluvan kuolemaan. Valvonnan suunnittelun tueksi kartoitettiin myös, mistä elintarvikeryhmistä kunkin vierasaineen pitoisuuksien seuranta ja määrittäminen olisi oleellisinta kansallisesta näkökulmasta. Arviossa otettiin huomioon ainekohtaisen prioriteettilistan lisäksi kansallisten aineistojen ikä ja kattavuus, vierasaineiden pitoisuudet eri elintarvikeryhmissä, kuluttajien suurimmat altistuslähteet sekä se, poikkeavatko Suomessa mitatut pitoisuudet selkeästi EU-keskiarvoista.
