Autocorrelation in Updating Pure SU(3) Lattice Gauge Theory by the use of Overrelaxed Algorithms
We measure the sweep-to-sweep autocorrelations of blocked loops below and
above the deconfinement transition for SU(3) on a lattice using
20000-140000 Monte-Carlo updating sweeps. A divergence of the autocorrelation
time toward the critical is seen at high blocking levels. The peak is
near = 6.33 where we observe 440 210 for the autocorrelation time
of Wilson loop on blocked lattice. The mixing of 7 Brown-Woch
overrelaxation steps followed by one pseudo-heat-bath step appears optimal to
reduce the autocorrelation time below the critical . Above the critical
, however, no clear difference between these two algorithms can be seen
and the system decorrelates rather fast.Comment: 4 pages of A4 format including 6-figure
Geodesic analysis in Kendall’s shape space with epidemiological applications
We analytically determine Jacobi fields and parallel transports and compute geodesic regression in Kendall’s shape space. Using the derived expressions, we can fully leverage the geometry via Riemannian optimization and thereby reduce the computational expense by several orders of magnitude over common, nonlinear constrained approaches. The methodology is demonstrated by performing a longitudinal statistical analysis of epidemiological shape data. As an example application, we have chosen 3D shapes of knee bones, reconstructed from image data of the Osteoarthritis Initiative. Comparing subject groups with incident and developing osteoarthritis versus normal controls, we find clear differences in the temporal development of femur shapes. This paves the way for early prediction of incident knee osteoarthritis, using geometry data alone
The defective seed5 (des5) mutant: effects on barley seed development and HvDek1, HvCr4, and HvSal1 gene regulation
Barley, one of the major small grain crops, is especially important in climatically demanding agricultural areas of the world, with multiple uses within food, feed, and beverage. The barley endosperm is further of special scientific interest due to its three aleurone cell layers, with the potential of bringing forward the molecular understanding of seed development and cell specification from Arabidopsis and maize. Work done in Arabidopsis and maize indicate the presence of conserved seed developmental pathways where Crinkly4 (Cr4), Defective kernel1 (Dek1), and Supernumerary aleurone layer1 (Sal1) are key players. With the use of microscopy, a comprehensive phenotypic characterization of the barley defective seed5 (des5) mutant is presented here. The analysis further extends to molecular quantification of gene expression changes in the des5 mutant by qRT-PCR. Moreover, full-length genomic sequences of the barley orthologues were generated and these were annotated as HvDek1, HvCr4, and HvSal1. The most striking results in this study are the patchy reduction in number of aleurone cells, rudimentary anticlinal aleurone cell walls, and the specific change of HvCr4 expression compared to HvDek1 and HvSal1. The data presented support the involvement of Hvdes5 in establishing aleurone cells. Finally, how these results might affect the current model of aleurone and epidermal cell identity and development is discussed with a speculation regarding a possible role of Des5 in regulating cell division/ secondary cell wall building
The Performance of Private Equity Funds: Does Diversification Matter?
This paper is the first systematic analysis of the impact of diversification on the performance of private equity funds. A unique data set allows the exact evaluation of diversification across the dimensions financing stages, industries, and countries. Very different levels of diversification can be observed across sample funds. While some funds are highly specialized others are highly diversified. The empirical results show that the rate of return of private equity funds declines with diversification across financing stages, but increases with diversification across industries. Accordingly, the fraction of portfolio companies which have a negative return or return nothing at all, increase with diversification across financing stages. Diversification across countries has no systematic effect on the performance of private equity funds
Time delays in PG1115+080: new estimates
We report new estimates of the time delays in the quadruple gravitationally
lensed quasar PG1115+080, obtained from the monitoring data in filter R with
the 1.5-m telescope at the Maidanak Mountain (Uzbekistan, Central Asia) in
2004-2006. The time delays are 16.4 days between images C and B, and 12 days
between C and A1+A2, with image C being leading for both pairs. The only known
estimates of the time delays in PG1115 are those based on observations by
Schechter et al. (1997) -- 23.7 and 9.4 days between images C and B, C and
A1+A2, respectively, as calculated by Schechter et al., and 25 and 13.3 days as
revised by Barkana (1997) for the same image components with the use of another
method. The new values of time delays in PG 1115+080 may be expected to provide
larger estimates of the Hubble constant thus decreasing a diversity between the
H_0 estimates taken from gravitationally lensed quasars and with other methods.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter
Embodying the Spirit(s): Pentecostal Demonology and Deliverance Discourse in Ethiopia
The article explores Pentecostal embodiment practices and concepts with regard to Holy Spirit baptism and demon possession. The studied material is connected to a specific and highly controversial debate in Ethiopian Pentecostalism, which revolves around the possibility of demon possession in born-again and Spirit-filled Christians. This debate runs through much of Ethiopian Pentecostal history and ultimately is concerned with whether or how Christians can host conflicting spiritual forces, in light of the strong dualism between God and evil in Pentecostal cosmology. The article shows that the embodiment of spirits and/or the Holy Spirit is related to theological concepts of the self, because these concepts define what may or may not be discerned in certain bodily manifestations. Moreover, the article contends that this debate thrives on a certain ambiguity in spirit embodiment, which invites the discernment of spiritual experts and thereby becomes a resource of power
