    Environment effect on internal fatigue crack propagation studied with in-situ X-ray microtomography

    In the present study, physically short fatigue cracks initiated from an artificial internal notch under vacuum conditions are observed in smooth specimens made of titanium alloy. The crack initiated from such a notch is not in contact with the surface during the majority of its propagation. Another batch of artificially notched specimens in the same alloy having their internal notch linked with the surface to bring air to the initiated short crack were tested too. All the specimens were ultrasonically cycled with synchrotron micro-computed tomography acquisitions which were regularly acquired from crack initiation detection to final failure without demounting the specimen. The number of cycles to failure, the internal crack growth rate and the crack growth mechanisms of internal cracks are compared for propagation under either air conditions or in the core of the alloy (i.e. under vacuum environment). It is shown that the environment plays a key role in the explanation of the very low crack growth rate of internal short crack loaded at very low stress amplitude leading to the gigacycle regim

    The D/H Ratio in the Interstellar Medium toward the White Dwarf PG0038+199

    We determine the D/H ratio in the interstellar medium toward the DO white dwarf PG0038+199 using spectra from the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE), with ground-based support from Keck HIRES. We employ curve of growth, apparent optical depth and profile fitting techniques to measure column densities and limits of many other species (H2, NaI, CI, CII, CIII, NI, NII, OI, SiII, PII, SIII, ArI and FeII) which allow us to determine related ratios such as D/O, D/N and the H2 fraction. Our efforts are concentrated on measuring gas-phase D/H, which is key to understanding Galactic chemical evolution and comparing it to predictions from Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We find column densities log N(HI) = 20.41+-0.08, log N(DI)=15.75+-0.08 and log N(H2) = 19.33+-0.04, yielding a molecular hydrogen fraction of 0.14+-0.02 (2 sigma errors), with an excitation temperature of 143+-5K. The high HI column density implies that PG0038+199 lies outside of the Local Bubble; we estimate its distance to be 297 (+164,-104)pc (1 sigma). D/[HI+2H2] toward PG0038+199 is 1.91(+0.52,-0.42) e-5 (2 sigma). There is no evidence of component structure on the scale of Delta v > 8 km/s based on NaI, but there is marginal evidence for structure on smaller scales. The D/H value is high compared to the majority of recent D/H measurements, but consistent with the values for two other measurements at similar distances. D/O is in agreement with other distant measurements. The scatter in D/H values beyond ~100pc remains a challenge for Galactic chemical evolution.Comment: 59 pages, 7 tables, 18 figures (1 standalone), accepted by ApJ v2 minor typos correcte

    O/H in the Local Bubble

    We present new measurements of the oxygen gas-phase abundance along four sightlines probing gas inside the Local Bubble, using data obtained with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) and the Hubble Space Telecope (HST). Combining these with seven previously published N(O I) and N(H I) measurements we determine a mean O/H ratio for the Local Bubble, (O/H) = (3.45 +/- 0.19)x10^(-4) (1 sigma in the mean). Our result is virtually identical to O/H = (3.43 +/- 0.15)x10^(-4) derived from data for sightlines probing gas well outside the Local Bubble. In contrast to the D/O and D/H ratios, which seem to have different values beyond the Local Bubble, our results show that the O/H ratio is constant and single-valued both inside and outside the Local Bubble, for low density sightlines, with column densities up to log N (H) ~ 21. In addition, the similarity of the two values above suggests that the net effect of the uncertain O I f-values in the FUSE bandpass is not significant. Taking into account the latest determinations of the Solar abundance of oxygen, our result implies that ~25% of the oxygen in the Local Bubble is depleted onto dust grains. The similarity of the value for O/H along low average density sightlines in the Local Bubble with that of denser sightlines beyond may permit a limit on the diluting effects of infalling low metallicity gas.Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa

    FUSE Observation of the Ultramassive White Dwarf PG1658+441

    We present an analysis of the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) spectrum of the ultramassive (M = 1.31 solar mass), magnetic (B_s = 2.3 MG) white dwarf PG 1658+441. The far ultraviolet (FUV) spectrum exhibits very broad Lyman lines and quasi-molecular Lyman beta satellites, but weak Lyman gamma satellites may also be present. PG 1658+441 is the hottest white dwarf known to show these satellite features. We fit the Lyman lines with stellar models and obtain atmospheric parameters consistent with a published analysis of the Balmer lines. By averaging results obtained for the different FUSE segments, we determine Teff = 29,620 +/- 500K and log g = 9.31 +/- 0.07. The models match the data over large portions of the spectrum but discrepancies remain near the satellite features. Finally, no trace elements have been identified in the FUV spectrum, and we provide abundance upper limits for C, N, Si, and P.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figure

    Increased FAT/CD36 Cycling and Lipid Accumulation in Myotubes Derived from Obese Type 2 Diabetic Patients

    BACKGROUND: Permanent fatty acid translocase (FAT/)CD36 relocation has previously been shown to be related to abnormal lipid accumulation in the skeletal muscle of type 2 diabetic patients, however mechanisms responsible for the regulation of FAT/CD36 expression and localization are not well characterized in human skeletal muscle. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Primary muscle cells derived from obese type 2 diabetic patients (OBT2D) and from healthy subjects (Control) were used to examine the regulation of FAT/CD36. We showed that compared to Control myotubes, FAT/CD36 was continuously cycling between intracellular compartments and the cell surface in OBT2D myotubes, independently of lipid raft association, leading to increased cell surface FAT/CD36 localization and lipid accumulation. Moreover, we showed that FAT/CD36 cycling and lipid accumulation were specific to myotubes and were not observed in reserve cells. However, in Control myotubes, the induction of FAT/CD36 membrane translocation by the activation of (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway did not increase lipid accumulation. This result can be explained by the fact that pharmacological activation of AMPK leads to increased mitochondrial beta-oxidation in Control cells. CONCLUSION/SIGNIFICANCE: Lipid accumulation in myotubes derived from obese type 2 diabetic patients arises from abnormal FAT/CD36 cycling while lipid accumulation in Control cells results from an equilibrium between lipid uptake and oxidation. As such, inhibiting FAT/CD36 cycling in the skeletal muscle of obese type 2 diabetic patients should be sufficient to diminish lipid accumulation

    Estimating magnetic filling factors from Zeeman–Doppler magnetograms

Two complementary techniques are principally used to characterize them. Zeeman–Doppler imaging (ZDI) can determine the geometry of the large-scale magnetic field while Zeeman broadening can assess the total unsigned flux including that associated with small-scale structures such as spots. In this work, we study a sample of stars that have been previously mapped with ZDI. We show that the average unsigned magnetic flux follows an activity-rotation relation separating into saturated and unsaturated regimes. We also compare the average photospheric magnetic flux recovered by ZDI, BV, with that recovered by Zeeman broadening studies, BI. In line with previous studies, BV ranges from a few % to ~20% of BI. We show that a power-law relationship between BV and BI exists and that ZDI recovers a larger fraction of the magnetic flux in more active stars. Using this relation, we improve on previous attempts to estimate filling factors, i.e., the fraction of the stellar surface covered with magnetic field, for stars mapped only with ZDI. Our estimated filling factors follow the well-known activity-rotation relation, which is in agreement with filling factors obtained directly from Zeeman broadening studies. We discuss the possible implications of these results for flux tube expansion above the stellar surface and stellar wind models.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Masses, radii, and orbits of small Kepler planets: the transition from gaseous to rocky planets

    We report on the masses, sizes, and orbits of the planets orbiting 22 Kepler stars. There are 49 planet candidates around these stars, including 42 detected through transits and 7 revealed by precise Doppler measurements of the host stars. Based on an analysis of the Kepler brightness measurements, along with high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy, Doppler spectroscopy, and (for 11 stars) asteroseismology, we establish low false-positive probabilities (FPPs) for all of the transiting planets (41 of 42 have an FPP under 1%), and we constrain their sizes and masses. Most of the transiting planets are smaller than three times the size of Earth. For 16 planets, the Doppler signal was securely detected, providing a direct measurement of the planet's mass. For the other 26 planets we provide either marginal mass measurements or upper limits to their masses and densities; in many cases we can rule out a rocky composition. We identify six planets with densities above 5 g cm-3, suggesting a mostly rocky interior for them. Indeed, the only planets that are compatible with a purely rocky composition are smaller than 2 R ⊕. Larger planets evidently contain a larger fraction of low-density material (H, He, and H2O)

    Controversy and consensus on the management of elevated sperm DNA fragmentation in male infertility: A global survey, current guidelines, and expert recommendations

    Purpose Sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) has been associated with male infertility and poor outcomes of assisted reproductive technology (ART). The purpose of this study was to investigate global practices related to the management of elevated SDF in infertile men, summarize the relevant professional society recommendations, and provide expert recommendations for managing this condition. Materials and Methods An online global survey on clinical practices related to SDF was disseminated to reproductive clinicians, according to the CHERRIES checklist criteria. Management protocols for various conditions associated with SDF were captured and compared to the relevant recommendations in professional society guidelines and the appropriate available evidence. Expert recommendations and consensus on the management of infertile men with elevated SDF were then formulated and adapted using the Delphi method. Results A total of 436 experts from 55 different countries submitted responses. As an initial approach, 79.1% of reproductive experts recommend lifestyle modifications for infertile men with elevated SDF, and 76.9% prescribe empiric antioxidants. Regarding antioxidant duration, 39.3% recommend 4–6 months and 38.1% recommend 3 months. For men with unexplained or idiopathic infertility, and couples experiencing recurrent miscarriages associated with elevated SDF, most respondents refer to ART 6 months after failure of conservative and empiric medical management. Infertile men with clinical varicocele, normal conventional semen parameters, and elevated SDF are offered varicocele repair immediately after diagnosis by 31.4%, and after failure of antioxidants and conservative measures by 40.9%. Sperm selection techniques and testicular sperm extraction are also management options for couples undergoing ART. For most questions, heterogenous practices were demonstrated. Conclusions This paper presents the results of a large global survey on the management of infertile men with elevated SDF and reveals a lack of consensus among clinicians. Furthermore, it demonstrates the scarcity of professional society guidelines in this regard and attempts to highlight the relevant evidence.
