National evaluation of Diplomas: cohort 1 - the second year
The introduction of Diplomas for 14-19 year olds represented a major innovation in educational opportunity for young people in England. The Diplomas are being offered at three levels and across 14 subjects and have been implemented in three phases (from September 2008, 2009 and 2010). Following the establishment of the Coalition government in May 2010, a number of changes to the implementation and delivery of the Diploma qualification were introduced. The Minister of State for Schools announced that development of new Diplomas in science, humanities and languages, which were due to be introduced from September 2011, would be discontinued. Additionally the Diploma entitlement, whereby all young people within an area would be able to access any of the Diploma subjects, would be removed and that the decision about which Diploma subjects would be available to students would in future be made by schools and colleges. Moreover, it was decided that the Gateway application process whereby consortia (of schools, colleges, training providers, employers and Higher Education Institutes (HEIs)) had previously submitted an application to the Department for Education (DfE) for each Diploma subject they wanted to offer would no longer be required for provision commencing from 2012. Other changes included the freedom for institutions to decide whether or not they wanted to work collaboratively to provide Diploma provision
How do new midwivesâ early workforce experiences influence their career plans? An integrative review of the literature
Aim
To explore how the early workforce experiences of new midwives influence their career plans.
Background
Each year, thousands of new midwives graduate from entry-to-practice midwifery courses, gain professional registration, and enter the workforce. Despite this, the world continues to face a shortage of midwives. The first five years of clinical practice, commonly referred to as the early career period, can be highly stressful for new midwives, contributing to early attrition from the profession. Supporting the transition from midwifery student to registered midwife is vital if we are to grow the workforce. Whilst the early career experiences of new midwives have been more broadly explored; little is currently understood about how these can influence their career plans.
Methods
Following Whittemore and Knaflâs (2005) five-stage process, an integrative review was conducted. Reporting followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) checklist. Nineteen studies met the criteria for inclusion. Thematic analysis was undertaken to organise and present the findings.
Findings
Thematic analysis, guided by the review question led to the identification of three overarching themes: âthe need for supportâ, âsustaining health and wellbeingâ, and âbeing able to provide safe and effective midwifery careâ.
Conclusion
Very little research to date has specifically explored how the early career experiences of new midwives influence their career plans, particularly within the Australian context. Further research is required to better understand how the early workforce experiences of new midwives can either strengthen their commitment to the profession or contribute to the decision to leave midwifery prematurely. This knowledge would provide a basis for the development of appropriate strategies to minimise early attrition from the midwifery profession and promote career longevity
Lymphoid Hyperplasia Resulting in Immune Dysregulation Is Caused by Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus Infection in Neonatal Pigs
Amid growing evidence that numerous viral infections can produce immunopathology, including nonspecific polyclonal lymphocyte activation, the need to test the direct impact of an infecting virus on the immune system of the host is crucial. This can best be tested in the isolator piglet model in which maternal and other extrinsic influences can be excluded. Therefore, neonatal isolator piglets were colonized with a benign Escherichia coli, or kept germfree, and then inoculated with wild-type porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) or sham medium. Two weeks after inoculation, serum IgM, IgG, and IgA levels were 30- to 50-, 20- to 80-, and 10- to 20-fold higher, respectively, in animals receiving virus vs sham controls, although \u3c1% was virus specific. PRRSV-infected piglets also had bronchial tree-associated lymph nodes and submandibular lymph nodes that were 5â10 times larger than colonized, sham-inoculated animals. Size-exclusion fast performance liquid chromatography revealed that PRRSV-infected sera contained high-molecular-mass fractions that contained IgG, suggesting the presence of immune complexes. Lesions, inflammatory cell infiltration, glomerular deposits of IgG, IgM, and IgA, and Abs of all three isotypes to basement membrane and vascular endothelium were observed in the kidneys of PRRSV-infected piglets. Furthermore, autoantibodies specific for Golgi Ags and dsDNA could be detected 3â4 wk after viral inoculation. These data demonstrate that PRRSV induces B cell hyperplasia in isolator piglets that leads to immunologic injury and suggests that the isolator piglet model could serve as a useful model to determine the mechanisms of virus-induced immunopathology in this species
Semiautomated text analytics for qualitative data synthesis
Approaches to synthesizing qualitative data have, to date, largely focused on
integrating the findings from published reports. However, developments in text
mining software offer the potential for efficient analysis of large pooled primary
qualitative datasets. This case study aimed to (a) provide a stepâbyâstep guide to
using one software application, Leximancer, and (b) interrogate opportunities
and limitations of the software for qualitative data synthesis. We applied
Leximancer v4.5 to a pool of five qualitative, UKâbased studies on transportation
such as walking, cycling, and driving, and displayed the findings of the
automated content analysis as intertopic distance maps. Leximancer enabled
us to âzoom outâ to familiarize ourselves with, and gain a broad perspective
of, the pooled data. It indicated which studies clustered around dominant topics
such as âpeople.â The software also enabled us to âzoom inâ to narrow the
perspective to specific subgroups and lines of enquiry. For example, âpeopleâ
featured in men's and women's narratives but were talked about differently,
with men mentioning âkidsâ and âold,â whereas women mentioned âthingsâ
and âstuff.â The approach provided us with a fresh lens for the initial inductive
step in the analysis process and could guide further exploration. The limitations
of using Leximancer were the substantial data preparation time involved and the
contextual knowledge required from the researcher to turn lines of inquiry into
meaningful insights. In summary, Leximancer is a useful tool for contributing
to qualitative data synthesis, facilitating comprehensive and transparent data
coding but can only inform, not replace, researcherâled interpretive work
Partnership, high performance work systems and quality of working life
The paper measures the effects of workplace partnership and selected high performance work practices on four different dimensions of employee experience. Whilst the partnership-high performance work systems nexus seems to have little impact on employees' job satisfaction or sense of attachment, it does, however, have a negative impact on both workplace stress and employee evaluations of union performance. The analysis thus questions common assumptions about the inevitability of 'mutual gain' and the necessity of employer/unionpartnership. Introduction and researc
Constructing bounded remainder sets and cut-and-project sets which are bounded distance to lattices, II
Recent results of several authors have led to constructions of parallelotopes which are bounded remainder sets for totally irrational toral rotations. In this brief note we explain, in retrospect, how some of these results can easily be obtained from a geometric argument which was previously employed by Duneau and Oguey in the study of deformation properties of mathematical models for quasicrystals
