    Stress analysis of a simplified compression plate fixation system for fractured bones

    AbstractA three-dimensional finite element model was generated of a plexiglass tube with an attached six-hole stainless steel compression plate to study the mechanics of internal fixation of fractured long bones. To demonstrate the importance of the plate-bone interface, this interface was represented three different ways in the finite element model. A plated tube with a uniform transverse osteotomy gap was also examined to study the mechanics of plated fractured bones. To validate the model, the results for the intact plated tube were compared to composite beam theory and strain gauge data from an instrumented physical model. Applications of the finite element model data included the prediction of screw failure modes, plate-induced osteopenia, and multi-axial strains in an interfragmentary region. The addition of sliding motion between the plate and tube resulted in a deviation from composite beam theory and improved correspondence with strain gage data when compared to a model having the plate and tube securely bonded. Sliding motion resulted in a much smaller region of bone subjected to reduced axial stress levels, which may decrease the extent of plate-induced osteopenia. The complex nature of induced strains in an osteotomy gap was also demonstrated, along with the tendency for failure of the screws nearest the fracture site

    Preventative ibandronate treatment has the most beneficial effect on the microstructure of bone in experimental tumor osteolysis

    We investigated the effect of ibandronate on three-dimensional (3-D) microstructure and bone mass in experimentally induced tumor osteolysis. Walker carcinosarcoma cells were implanted into the left femur of female rats that received 26-day ibandronate pretreatment followed by continued therapy or ibandronate posttreatment only. A tumor-only group received isotonic saline. At endpoint, excised femurs were scanned using microcomputed tomography (ÎĽCT) to assess bone volume density, bone mineral content, trabecular number/thickness, and separation for cortical plus trabecular bone or trabecular bone alone. Compared with the nonimplanted right femur, bone volume and surface density and trabecular number and thickness were reduced in the distal left femur following tumor cell implantation. ÎĽCT analysis revealed greater cortical and trabecular bone mineral content in the preventative and interventional (pre-post tumor) ibandronate group, and the interventional (post-tumor) ibandronate group, versus the tumor-only group. Bone volume density was significantly higher in pre-post and post-tumor groups compared to the tumor-only group. After preventative and interventional ibandronate, bone volume density and trabecular thickness were 13% and 60% greater, respectively, than in the post-tumor treatment group. 3-D ÎĽCT images confirmed microstructural changes.     The barycentric motion of exoplanet host stars: tests of solar spin-orbit coupling

    Empirical evidence suggests a tantalising but unproven link between various indicators of solar activity and the barycentric motion of the Sun. The latter is exemplified by transitions between regular and more disordered motion modulated by the motions of the giant planets, and rare periods of retrograde motion with negative orbital angular momentum. An examination of the barycentric motion of exoplanet host stars, and their stellar activity cycles, has the potential of proving or disproving the Sun's motion as an underlying factor in the complex patterns of short- and long-term solar variability indices, by establishing whether such correlations exist in other planetary systems. A variety of complex patterns of barycentric motions of exoplanet host stars is demonstrated, depending on the number, masses and orbits of the planets. Each of the behavioural types proposed to correlate with solar activity are also evident in exoplanet host stars: repetitive patterns influenced by massive multiple planets, epochs of rapid change in orbital angular momentum, and intervals of negative orbital angular momentum. The study provides the basis for independent investigations of the widely-studied but unproven suggestion that the Sun's motion is somehow linked to various indicators of solar activity. We show that, because of the nature of their barycentric motions, the host stars HD168443 and HD74156 offer particularly powerful tests of this hypothesis.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures.     On the Relationship Between Molecular Hydrogen and Carbon Monoxide Abundances in Molecular Clouds

    The most usual tracer of molecular gas is line emission from CO. However, the reliability of that tracer has long been questioned in environments different from the Milky Way. We study the relationship between H2 and CO abundances using a fully dynamical model of magnetized turbulence coupled to a chemical network simplified to follow only the dominant pathways for H2 and CO formation and destruction, and including photodissociation using a six-ray approximation. We find that the abundance of H2 is primarily determined by the amount of time available for its formation, which is proportional to the product of the density and the metallicity, but insensitive to photodissociation. Photodissociation only becomes important at extinctions under a few tenths of a visual magnitude, in agreement with both observational and prior theoretical work. On the other hand, CO forms quickly, within a dynamical time, but its abundance depends primarily on photodissociation, with only a weak secondary dependence on H2 abundance. As a result, there is a sharp cutoff in CO abundance at mean visual extinctions A_V < 3. At lower values of A_V we find that the ratio of H2 column density to CO emissivity X_CO is proportional to A_V^(-3.5). This explains the discrepancy observed in low metallicity systems between cloud masses derived from CO observations and other techniques such as infrared emission. Our work predicts that CO-bright clouds in low metallicity systems should be systematically larger or denser than Milky Way clouds, or both. Our results further explain the narrow range of observed molecular cloud column densities as a threshold effect, without requiring the assumption of virial equilibrium.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures.     The endorsement of cognitive distortions: comparing child pornography offenders and contact sex offenders

    This study examined the endorsement of cognitive distortions in child pornography offenders (CPOs), using an established assessment tool, the Abel and Becker Cognition Scale. The scale was expanded to include cognitions specific to child pornography offending, extracted from Howitt and Sheldon’s Children and Sexual Activities Inventory (C&SA). Three samples of CPOs, child sex offenders and offenders with both offence types responded to the cognition items. An exploratory Principal Component Analysis suggested six main components of the scale. CPOs were significantly less likely to endorse these statements in general, and this was more pronounced on items that project blame onto the child or other people, describe a need for power and consider children as sexually active. The statements extracted from C&SA did not differentiate between the groups. These findings are discussed under consideration of the relationship between cognitive distortions and contact sex offending, and in reference to the general criticism concerning the definition and appropriate measurement of cognitive distortion
