Coping and adjustment in caregivers: a systematic review.
This systematic review assessed coping and adjustment in caregivers of all ages to provide a synthesis of existing literature in the context of methodological approaches and underlying theory. Four databases were searched. Reference lists, citations and experts were consulted. In total, 27 studies (13 quantitative and 14 qualitative) were included. Coping factors associated with adjustment (problem- versus emotion-focussed coping and cognitive strategies) and psychosocial factors associated with physiological adjustment (trait anxiety, coping style and social support) were identified. Results raised methodological issues. Future research requires physiological adjustment measures and longitudinal assessment of the long-term impact of childhood caregiving. Findings inform future caregiver research and interventions
Through the eyes of a young carer: A photo elicitation study of protective resilience.
Caregiving is recognised as a source of stress with potential for negative health impacts as well as positive outcomes and development of resilience. For young carers, children, and adolescents providing care for close family members, adaptation through resilience is crucial, yet work using a resilience approach is limited. This study explored protective factors and pathways to resilience in a sample of young carers, through application of the socioecological model in caring relationships. An in-depth qualitative approach was used, with in-person interviews facilitated by auto-driven photo elicitation. Deductive thematic analysis was applied, framed by three levels (individual, community, and society) of the socioecological model of resilience. Twelve participants (nine girls and three boys) aged 5–18 years, each providing care to a family member, were recruited using opportunity and volunteer sampling via carers’ centres in the southwest of England. Ten key themes were identified, four at the individual level: pre-empting challenges and planning, cognitive strategies, emotional strategies, and seeking solitude; three at the community level: family support, friendships, and pets and inanimate objects; and three at the society level: professional support, access to caregiver activities and community, and being outdoors. The location of themes at each level indicated relevance of the socioecological model to identification of protective factors in a young carer population. These findings have important applications for guidance to charities and organisations supporting young carers. Identification of factors that promote resilience offers support for the development of well-informed interventions, which harness these protective factors to develop resilience and improve health for young carers
Nutritional supplements, leptin, insulin and progesterone in female Australian Cashmere goats
In small ruminants, reproductive wastage due to early embryo mortality is a major industry issue because it reduces reproductive efficiency and limits productivity. In sheep, early embryo mortality appears to be caused by reductions in progesterone concentrations when animals are over-fed, but this concept has not been studied in goats. Therefore we tested whether a supplement of lupin grain affects circulating progesterone concentrations in Cashmere goats during non- breeding season. We allocated 23 females into two groups: Controls were fed to ensure maintenance of body mass (85% chaff, 15% lupins head daily); Supplemented goats were fed twice their daily requirements for maintenance. All animals were anovulatory and treated with CIDRs to supply exogenous progesterone at a relatively constant rate. Nutritional treatments lasted for 18 days, and coincided with the presence of CIDRs. Leptin and insulin concentrations were increased (p < 0.05) by supplementation, but progesterone concentrations did not significant differ between groups at any time during the experiment. We conclude that a dietary supplement that elicits major changes in energy homeostasis does not reduce progesterone concentrations in goats and is thus unlikely to affect embryo mortality
Derivation and validation of an algorithm to predict transitions from community to residential long-term care among persons with dementia—A retrospective cohort study
Objectives: To develop and validate a model to predict time-to-LTC admissions among individuals with dementia. Design: Population-based retrospective cohort study using health administrative data. Setting and participants: Community-dwelling older adults (65+) in Ontario living with dementia and assessed with the Resident Assessment Instrument for Home Care (RAI-HC) between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2017. Methods: Individuals in the derivation cohort (n = 95,813; assessed before March 31, 2015) were followed for up to 360 days after the index RAI-HC assessment for admission into LTC. We used a multivariable Fine Gray sub-distribution hazard model to predict the cumulative incidence of LTC entry while accounting for all-cause mortality as a competing risk. The model was validated in 34,038 older adults with dementia with an index RAI-HC assessment between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2017. Results: Within one year of a RAI-HC assessment, 35,513 (37.1%) individuals in the derivation cohort and 10,735 (31.5%) in the validation cohort entered LTC. Our algorithm was well-calibrated (Emax = 0.119, ICIavg = 0.057) and achieved a c-statistic of 0.707 (95% confidence interval: 0.703–0.712) in the validation cohort. Conclusions and implications: We developed an algorithm to predict time to LTC entry among individuals living with dementia. This tool can inform care planning for individuals with dementia and their family caregivers

Integrating Integrated Water Management

Management has tended to be fragmented across anthropocentrically defined disciplines, potentially generating unintended negative consequences. The ecosystem approach and the ecosystem services framework emphasise interlinked, albeit often overlooked, benefits that the natural environment provides for people. This enables recognition and avoidance of potential ‘negative externalities’, identification of solutions optimising benefits across multiple services, and participation of wider constituencies of stakeholders. Systemic, outcome-based approaches are inherently economically efficient, yielding greater cumulative benefits for lower transaction costs by working with natural processes. The ecosystem approach establishes geographical and socio-economic contexts for management ecosystem service outcomes, providing a broader context in which to nest established water resource management methods. The ecosystem approach can also be applied at different scales and to diverse societal activities, internalising into them the value of natural processes. It is amenable to integration into catchment-scale considerations, yet does not present these activities as subsidiary to river basin planning. The addition of ecosystem services for options appraisal in preexisting decision-support tools adapts them to better address multi-benefit goals. Shifts are required in the policy and economic environment, but engineers have an important role in promoting, applying and innovating multibenefit solutions
Constraints on the shapes of galaxy dark matter haloes from weak gravitational lensing
We study the shapes of galaxy dark matter haloes by measuring the anisotropy
of the weak gravitational lensing signal around galaxies in the second
Red-sequence Cluster Survey (RCS2). We determine the average shear anisotropy
within the virial radius for three lens samples: all galaxies with
19<m_r'<21.5, and the `red' and `blue' samples, whose lensing signals are
dominated by massive low-redshift early-type and late-type galaxies,
respectively. To study the environmental dependence of the lensing signal, we
separate each lens sample into an isolated and clustered part and analyse them
separately. We also measure the azimuthal dependence of the distribution of
physically associated galaxies around the lens samples. We find that these
satellites preferentially reside near the major axis of the lenses, and
constrain the angle between the major axis of the lens and the average location
of the satellites to =43.7 deg +/- 0.3 deg for the `all' lenses,
=41.7 deg +/- 0.5 deg for the `red' lenses and =42.0 deg +/- 1.4
deg for the `blue' lenses. For the `all' sample, we find that the anisotropy of
the galaxy-mass cross-correlation function =0.23 +/- 0.12, providing
weak support for the view that the average galaxy is embedded in, and
preferentially aligned with, a triaxial dark matter halo. Assuming an
elliptical Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, we find that the ratio of the
dark matter halo ellipticity and the galaxy ellipticity
f_h=e_h/e_g=1.50+1.03-1.01, which for a mean lens ellipticity of 0.25
corresponds to a projected halo ellipticity of e_h=0.38+0.26-0.25 if the halo
and the lens are perfectly aligned. For isolated galaxies of the `all' sample,
the average shear anisotropy increases to =0.51+0.26-0.25 and
f_h=4.73+2.17-2.05, whilst for clustered galaxies the signal is consistent with

The VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey - Searching for Cosmic Voids
The characterisation of cosmic voids gives unique information about the
large-scale distribution of galaxies, their evolution and the cosmological
model. We identify and characterise cosmic voids in the VIMOS Public
Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS) at redshift 0.55 < z < 0.9. A new void
search method is developed based upon the identification of empty spheres that
fit between galaxies. The method can be used to characterise the cosmic voids
despite the presence of complex survey boundaries and internal gaps. We
investigate the impact of systematic observational effects and validate the
method against mock catalogues. We measure the void size distribution and the
void-galaxy correlation function. We construct a catalogue of voids in VIPERS.
The distribution of voids is found to agree well with the distribution of voids
found in mock catalogues. The void-galaxy correlation function shows
indications of outflow velocity from the voids
Local biases drive, but do not determine, the perception of illusory trajectories
When a dot moves horizontally across a set of tilted lines of alternating orientations, the dot appears to be moving up and down along its trajectory. This perceptual phenomenon, known as the slalom illusion, reveals a mismatch between the veridical motion signals and the subjective percept of the motion trajectory, which has not been comprehensively explained. In the present study, we investigated the empirical boundaries of the slalom illusion using psychophysical methods. The phenomenon was found to occur both under conditions of smooth pursuit eye movements and constant fixation, and to be consistently amplified by intermittently occluding the dot trajectory. When the motion direction of the dot was not constant, however, the stimulus display did not elicit the expected illusory percept. These findings confirm that a local bias towards perpendicularity at the intersection points between the dot trajectory and the tilted lines cause the illusion, but also highlight that higher-level cortical processes are involved in interpreting and amplifying the biased local motion signals into a global illusion of trajectory perception
