Black adzes in the Early Neolithic of Belgium: Contribution of the Raman microspectrometry and petrography in characterization and sourcing

    Get PDF
Early Neolithic (Linear Pottery Culture) adzes originate from settlements and workshops accompany the neolithization of Belgium. They are made from a wide range of extraregional lithic raw materials such as metamorphic green rocks (amphibolite) and black volcanic rocks (“basalt’) beside more local or regional raw material as flints, light-coloured (sedimentary and lightly metamorphic) quartzites, black lydites (Cambrian nodular phtanite of Céroux-Mousty and Lower Namurian banded phtanites) and dark grey Lower Namurian silicified sandstones previously called “Micaceous sandstones of Horion-Hozémont’. The discovery of the workshop of Noirfontaine near the city of Liège in the 1970s and 1980s provides exceptional assemblage available for updating analytical studies. This research focuses on the multi-scale characterization, the discrimination and sourcing both Cambrian and Namurian black sedimentary rocks rich in secondary silica composing Early Neolithic adzes found in Belgium. Their black colour results from finely dispersed organic matter, but the absence of palynomorphs does not allow a biostratigraphic ascription. Additional petrographical analyses (Optical Petrography, Scanning Electron Microscope), X-ray diffraction, chemical analyses (Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy) and measuring the degree of graphitization of the organic matter through Raman microspectrometry have been decisive in identifying the geological and geographical provenances by comparing the acquired results with geological reference samples collected in the field or through reference collections. Cambrian lydites are coming from a very restricted area and were preferred to other more local rock sources

    Get PDF
Objective: To determine the efficacy of bone marrow cell implantation into the necrotic lesion of the femoral head on clinical symptoms and the progression of osteonecrosis of the femoral head in comparison with core decompression. Methods: We studied nineteen patients and twenty four hips with early stage osteonecrosis of the femoral head. The hips were allocated to either core decompression only or core decompression and implantation of bone marrow cells. Both patients and assessors were blind with respect to treatment group assignment. The primary outcomes were clinical symptoms and disease progression. Results: Bone marrow implantation afforded a significant reduction in pain and in joint symptoms and reduced the incidence of fractural stages. At 60 months, eight of the eleven hips in the control group had deteriorated to the fractural stage whereas only three of the thirteen hips in the bone marrow graft group had progressed to that stage. Survival analysis showed a significant difference in the time to failure between the two groups at 60 months. Patients had only minor side-effects after the treatments. Conclusions: This long term follow-up study confirmed that implantation of autologous bone marrow cells in the necrotic lesion might be an effective treatment for patients with early stages of osteonecrosis of the femoral head

Moreover, to include a supply chain monitoring strategy in order to allow companies have a transparent management, as well as a responsible and positive impact in the society. Furthermore, under Governance; the recommendation is to engage employees during the development of corporate policies and procedures. Socially, we advice the engagement of multiple stakeholder to provide operational feedback as well as to allow providers to create or extend forced labor policies. Last but certainly not least, we encourage the close monitoring of strict action plan over the environmental factors.Tesi

Ceramic Femoral Components in Total Knee Arthroplasty - Two Year Follow-Up Results of an International Prospective Multi-Centre Study

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Total knee arthroplasty can be considered as a reliable surgical procedure with a good long-term clinical result. However, implant failure due to particle induced aseptic loosening as well as the aspect of hypersensitivity to metal ions still remains an emerging issue. METHODS: The purpose of this prospective international multi-centre study was to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes and the reliability of the unconstrained Multigen Plus Total Knee System with a new BIOLOX® delta ceramic femoral component. Cemented total knee arthroplasty was performed on 108 patients (110 knees) at seven hospitals in three countries. Clinical and radiological evaluations were performed preoperatively, and after 3, 12 and 24 months postoperatively using the HSS-, WOMAC-, SF-36-score and standardised X-rays. RESULTS: The mean preoperative HSS-Score amounted to 55.5 ± 11.5 points and improved significantly in all postoperative evaluations (85.7 ± 11.7 points at 24 months). Furthermore, improvements in WOMAC- and SF-36-score were evaluated as significant at all points of evaluation. Radiolucent lines around the femoral ceramic component at 24 months were found in four cases. Progression of radiolucent lines was not seen and no implant loosening was observed. During the 24 month follow-up eight patients underwent subsequent surgery due to reasons unrelated to the implant material. CONCLUSIONS: The observed clinical and radiological results are encouraging for a long-term survival of the ceramic femoral component. Therefore, ceramic implants could be a promising solution not only for patients with allergies against metallic implant materials, but also for the osteoarthritic knee joint. Long-term follow-up is necessary to draw conclusions regarding the superiority of the ceramic knee implants concerning in vivo wear and long-term survivorship

Interobserver and intraobserver reliability of clinical assessments in knee osteoarthritis

© 2016 The Journal of Rheumatology. All rights reserved. Objective. Clinical examination of the knee is subject to measurement error. The aim of this analysis was to determine interobserver and intraobserver reliability of commonly used clinical tests in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods. We studied subjects with symptomatic knee OA who were participants in an open-label clinical trial of intraarticular steroid therapy. Following standardization of the clinical test procedures, 2 clinicians assessed 25 subjects independently at the same visit, and the same clinician assessed 88 subjects over an interval period of 2-10 weeks; in both cases prior to the steroid intervention. Clinical examination included assessment of bony enlargement, crepitus, quadriceps wasting, knee effusion, joint-line and anserine tenderness, and knee range of movement (ROM). Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC), estimated kappa (k), weighted kappa (k?), and Bland-Altman plots were used to determine interobserver and intraobserver levels of agreement. Results. Using Landis and Koch criteria, interobserver k scores were moderate for patellofemoral joint (k = 0.53) and anserine tenderness (k = 0.48); good for bony enlargement (k = 0.66), quadriceps wasting (k = 0.78), crepitus (k = 0.78), medial tibiofemoral joint tenderness (k = 0.76), and effusion assessed by ballottement (k = 0.73) and bulge sign (k? = 0.78); and excellent for lateral tibiofemoral joint tenderness (k = 1.00), flexion (ICC = 0.97), and extension (ICC = 0.87) ROM. Intraobserver k scores were moderate for lateral tibiofemoral joint tenderness (k = 0.60); good for crepitus (k = 0.78), effusion assessed by ballottement test (k = 0.77), patellofemoral joint (k = 0.66), medial tibiofemoral joint (k = 0.64), and anserine tenderness (k = 0.73); and excellent for effusion assessed by bulge sign (k? = 0.83), bony enlargement (k = 0.98), quadriceps wasting (k = 0.83), flexion (ICC = 0.99), and extension (ICC = 0.96) ROM. Conclusion. Among individuals with symptomatic knee OA, the reliability of clinical examination of the knee was at least good for the majority of clinical signs of knee OA
