    Searching for the Rail Bonus

    The inherent superiority of rail-based public transport options over bus-based alternatives, all other things being equal, has been stipulated in the literature and in the public policy discussion for some time. The exact strength of any such rail bonus is important to a public transport operator which has to consider the replacement of rail-based services by bus services. The public transport operator of the city of Dresden (DVB), while generally upgrading its services, has to consider this option, in particular where the continuing tram operation would require a costly rehabilitation of the tracks. The measurement of any such systematic preference for rail-based modes is difficult, as is requires either a before-and-after study of such a switch, controlled for the other relevant service attributes, e.g. frequency, speed, reliability, price, route, etc., or a study of a network, in which rail- and road-based modes offer comparable types of services, with bus services inparticular not restricted to feeder services to rail/tram lines. Both are rare for obvious reasons. A recent service change of the DVB offered the opportunity to look at the issue in detail. A series of surveys were undertaken for this purpose before and after: A one-day travel diary (including a household questionnaire)  A survey of the image of the services A between-mode stated preference exercise focusing on the choice between public transport and private motorised transport where public transport was provided by either bus or tram (7 choice situations) A within-mode stated preference exercise looking at the trade-offs between public transport modes, in particular levels of comfort, travel times and transfers (7 choice situations). The paper reports detailed results from this study addressing the differences in preferences between the waves (effects of familiarity with an alternative) from both separate and joint stated preference and stated preference/revealed preference models. The modelling so far indicates a consistent, but weak preference for the rail option through a higher value-of-time for rail usage, higher valuation of new rail vehicles in comparison to new busses, although they are partially balanced by a higher transfer penalty. &nbsp

    Hierarchical Model Partitioning for Parallel VLSI-Simulation Using Evolutionary Algorithms improved bei superpositions of partitions

    Parallelization of VLSI-simulation exploiting model-inherent parallelism is a promising way to accelerate verification processes for whole processor designs. Thereby partitioning of hardware models influences the effciency of following parallel simulations essentially. Based on a formal model of Parallel Cycle Simulation we introduce partition valuation combining communication and load balancing aspects. We choose a 2-level hierarchical partitioning scheme providing a framework for a mixture of experts strategy. Considering a complete model of a PowerPC 604 processor, we demonstrate that Evolutionary Algorithms can be applied successfully to our model partitioning problem on the second hierarchy level, supposing a reduced problem complexity after fast pre-partitioning on the first level. For the first time, we apply superpositions during execution of Evolutionary Algorithms, resulting in a faster decreasing fitness function and an acceleration of population handling

    Percutaneous cement augmentation for the treatment of depression fractures of the tibial plateau

    The management of insufficiency fractures of the tibial plateau in osteoporotic patients can be very challenging, since it is difficult to achieve a stable fixation, an essential condition for the patients' early mobilization. We present a minimally invasive technique for the treatment of proximal tibial plateau fractures, "tibiaplasty”, using percutaneous polymethylmethacrylate augmentation. Five osteoporotic patients (7 fractures) with a non-traumatic insufficiency tibial plateau fracture were treated with this technique at the authors' institution from 2006 to 2008. The patients' median age was 79 (range 62-88) years. The intervention was performed percutaneously under general or spinal anesthesia; after the intervention, immediate full weight bearing was allowed. The technique was feasible in all patients and no complications related to the intervention were observed. All patients reported a relevant reduction in pain, were able to mobilize with full weight bearing and would undergo the operation again. No secondary loss of reduction or progression of arthrosis was observed in radiological controls; no revision surgery was required. Our initial results indicate that tibiaplasty is a good treatment option for the management of insufficiency in tibial plateau fractures in osteoporotic patients. The technique is minimally invasive, safe and allows immediate mobilization without restrictions. In our group of patients, we found excellent early to mid-term result

    Zwischenbericht zur Arbeit im DFG-Projekt 'Partitionierungsalgorithmen für Modelldatenstrukturen zur parallelen compilergesteuerten Logiksimulation

    Unser Forschungsvorhaben hat die Entwicklung, Analyse und Implementierung von Partitionierungsalgorithmen für industrierelevante Modelle kompletter Prozessorstrukturen mit mehreren Millionen Elementen auf der Gate-Ebene in Vorbereitung der parallelen zyklusbasierten Logiksimulation zum Ziel. Dabei verkörpern die von uns auf Basis der sequentiellen Simulatoren TEXSIM und MVLSIM entwickelten Simulatoren parallelTEXSIM, parallelMVLSIM und der im Berichtszeitraum realisierte dlbSIM das unmittelbare Anwendungsfeld. Aufbauend auf dem im bisherigen Projektverlauf entstandenen formalen Modell der parallelen Simulation, der hierarchichen Partitionierungsstrategie sowie den in diesem Rahmen entwickelten Partitionierungsalgorithmen konzentrierten wir uns in der laufenden Arbeit auf die Erweiterung des Parametrisierungskonzepts für Partitionierungsalgorithmen und die Beschleunigung der Partitionierung durch deren Parallelisierung

    Icebergs in the North Atlantic: Modelling circulation changes and glacio-marine deposition

    In order to investigate meltwater events in the North Atlantic, a simple iceberg generation, drift, and melting routine was implemented in a high-resolution OGCM. Starting from the modelled last glacial state, every 25th day cylindrical model icebergs 300 meters high were released at 32 specific points along the coasts. Icebergs launched at the Barents Shelf margin spread a light meltwater lid over the Norwegian and Greenland Seas, shutting down the deep convection and the anti-clockwise circulation in this area. Due to the constraining ocean circulation, the icebergs produce a tongue of relatively cold and fresh water extending eastward from Hudson Strait that must develop at this location, regardless of iceberg origin. From the total amount of freshwater inferred by the icebergs, the thickness of the deposited IRD could be calculated in dependance of iceberg sediment concentration. In this way, typical extent and thickness of Heinrich layers could be reproduced, running the model for 250 years of steady state with constant iceberg meltwater inflow

    Optimization of the derivative expansion in the nonperturbative renormalization group

    We study the optimization of nonperturbative renormalization group equations truncated both in fields and derivatives. On the example of the Ising model in three dimensions, we show that the Principle of Minimal Sensitivity can be unambiguously implemented at order 2\partial^2 of the derivative expansion. This approach allows us to select optimized cut-off functions and to improve the accuracy of the critical exponents ν\nu and η\eta. The convergence of the field expansion is also analyzed.     Two are better than one: Fundamental parameters of frame coherence

    This paper investigates two parameters that measure the coherence of a frame: worst-case and average coherence. We first use worst-case and average coherence to derive near-optimal probabilistic guarantees on both sparse signal detection and reconstruction in the presence of noise. Next, we provide a catalog of nearly tight frames with small worst-case and average coherence. Later, we find a new lower bound on worst-case coherence; we compare it to the Welch bound and use it to interpret recently reported signal reconstruction results. Finally, we give an algorithm that transforms frames in a way that decreases average coherence without changing the spectral norm or worst-case coherence

    Functional Diversity and Structural Disorder in the Human Ubiquitination Pathway

    The ubiquitin-proteasome system plays a central role in cellular regulation and protein quality control (PQC). The system is built as a pyramid of increasing complexity, with two E1 (ubiquitin activating), few dozen E2 (ubiquitin conjugating) and several hundred E3 (ubiquitin ligase) enzymes. By collecting and analyzing E3 sequences from the KEGG BRITE database and literature, we assembled a coherent dataset of 563 human E3s and analyzed their various physical features. We found an increase in structural disorder of the system with multiple disorder predictors (IUPred - E1: 5.97%, E2: 17.74%, E3: 20.03%). E3s that can bind E2 and substrate simultaneously (single subunit E3, ssE3) have significantly higher disorder (22.98%) than E3s in which E2 binding (multi RING-finger, mRF, 0.62%), scaffolding (6.01%) and substrate binding (adaptor/substrate recognition subunits, 17.33%) functions are separated. In ssE3s, the disorder was localized in the substrate/adaptor binding domains, whereas the E2-binding RING/HECT-domains were structured. To demonstrate the involvement of disorder in E3 function, we applied normal modes and molecular dynamics analyses to show how a disordered and highly flexible linker in human CBL (an E3 that acts as a regulator of several tyrosine kinase-mediated signalling pathways) facilitates long-range conformational changes bringing substrate and E2-binding domains towards each other and thus assisting in ubiquitin transfer. E3s with multiple interaction partners (as evidenced by data in STRING) also possess elevated levels of disorder (hubs, 22.90% vs. non-hubs, 18.36%). Furthermore, a search in PDB uncovered 21 distinct human E3 interactions, in 7 of which the disordered region of E3s undergoes induced folding (or mutual induced folding) in the presence of the partner. In conclusion, our data highlights the primary role of structural disorder in the functions of E3 ligases that manifests itself in the substrate/adaptor binding functions as well as the mechanism of ubiquitin transfer by long-range conformational transitions. © 2013 Bhowmick et al
