    Re-imagining the role of the physiotherapist when managing people with long-term conditions.

    The rising prevalence of long-term conditions (LTCs) is placing increasing pressures on healthcare systems. With the future prospect that more individuals will experience multiple co-morbidities, LTCs are becoming a growing concern. This article aims to discuss the challenges faced by and the opportunities afforded to physiotherapists when caring for people with LTCs. It highlights the complexity of managing people with LTCs and the demands faced by physiotherapists when working within a transitioning healthcare service that necessitates cost-effective yet, sustainable care. It considers ways that interventions can be optimised to not only support individuals with LTCs to improve their quality of life, but to live an existence that has meaning and purpose. It also explores health promotion strategies that could be influential in changing the future healthcare landscape, by helping to prevent the occurrence of LTCs. The wider intention is to facilitate discussion on the future role of the physiotherapy profession in LTC management, in the hope that a shared vision can be created that is inspiring and transformative. One that imagines a physiotherapy service that is resilient to change and contemporary in approach, which continues to evolve to support the changing needs of people with LTCs

    Older adults' perceptions of adherence to community physical activity groups

    © 2014 Cambridge University Press.Community physical activity (PA) groups have come in to being worldwide to inspire older adults to engage in PA. However, there is limited evidence that older adults adhere to these groups, particularly those of a lower socio-economic status, with health conditions, from black and minority ethnic (BME) groups and men. This study aimed to explore experiences of attending PA groups from the viewpoint of community-living older adults, including those sub-groups of the population highlighted above. The purpose was to gain an understanding of what would influence long-term adherence to community PA groups. Eighteen participants aged 65 and above took part in three focus groups carried out in North West England. Thematic network analysis was used for theme generation and interpretation. Low-cost, universal locations are essential to enable older adults to engage regularly in PA, however, it is the social space that is created within these physical settings that is most influential in fostering their long-term adherence. Facilitating cross-cultural relationships and supporting older adults to have more control in shaping the PA environment will ensure that these settings are more conducive to the long-term adherence of diverse groups of older adults

    Long-term experiments with an adaptive spherical view representation for navigation in changing environments

    Real-world environments such as houses and offices change over time, meaning that a mobile robot’s map will become out of date. In this work, we introduce a method to update the reference views in a hybrid metric-topological map so that a mobile robot can continue to localize itself in a changing environment. The updating mechanism, based on the multi-store model of human memory, incorporates a spherical metric representation of the observed visual features for each node in the map, which enables the robot to estimate its heading and navigate using multi-view geometry, as well as representing the local 3D geometry of the environment. A series of experiments demonstrate the persistence performance of the proposed system in real changing environments, including analysis of the long-term stability

    Experiences of attendance at a neuromuscular centre: perceptions of adults with neuromuscular disorders.

    PURPOSE: The aim of this research is to gain an insight into adults with neuromuscular disorders' experiences of attendance at a specialised, voluntary sector, Neuromuscular Centre and explore its value to these adults who attend for treatment, education or employment. METHOD: This study was qualitative in design. In-depth interviews were conducted with nine self-selected participants, recruited from the population of adults with neuromuscular disorders who attended the Neuromuscular Centre. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed. Thematic networks were utilised to aid interpretation. RESULTS: Participants saw the benefit of specialist input to remain mobile and independent for longer. The Centre created a culture of understanding and empathy which facilitated mutual support and self-acceptance. Opportunities for employment and education offered a sense of purpose. Sharing experiences developed self-knowledge and the ability to self-manage their condition. CONCLUSION: Attendance at this voluntary sector Neuromuscular Centre provided physical, psychosocial and economic benefits. The Neuromuscular Centre through its holistic approach offers a unique model for rehabilitation of adults with neuromuscular disorders. As an enterprise, satellite centres adopting the ethos of the Centre could be created, which could potentially help to redress the inequalities in health care for adults with neuromuscular disorders

    Temperature effects on carbon storage are controlled by soil stabilisation capacities

The UKESM data from the sixth coupled model intercomparison project (CMIP6) is available in the public data archive (https://data.ceda.ac.uk/badc/cmip6/data/CMIP6/CMIP/MOHC/UKESM1-0-LL).Physical and chemical stabilisation mechanisms are now known to play a critical role in controlling carbon (C) storage in mineral soils, leading to suggestions that climate warming-induced C losses may be lower than previously predicted. By analysing > 9,000 soil profiles, here we show that, overall, C storage declines strongly with mean annual temperature. However, the reduction in C storage with temperature was more than three times greater in coarse-textured soils, with limited capacities for stabilising organic matter, than in fine-textured soils with greater stabilisation capacities. This pattern was observed independently in cool and warm regions, and after accounting for potentially confounding factors (plant productivity, precipitation, aridity, cation exchange capacity, and pH). The results could not, however, be represented by an established Earth system model (ESM).     Visual Odometry Based on Structural Matching of Local Invariant Features Using Stereo Camera Sensor

    This paper describes a novel sensor system to estimate the motion of a stereo camera. Local invariant image features are matched between pairs of frames and linked into image trajectories at video rate, providing the so-called visual odometry, i.e., motion estimates from visual input alone. Our proposal conducts two matching sessions: the first one between sets of features associated to the images of the stereo pairs and the second one between sets of features associated to consecutive frames. With respect to previously proposed approaches, the main novelty of this proposal is that both matching algorithms are conducted by means of a fast matching algorithm which combines absolute and relative feature constraints. Finding the largest-valued set of mutually consistent matches is equivalent to finding the maximum-weighted clique on a graph. The stereo matching allows to represent the scene view as a graph which emerge from the features of the accepted clique. On the other hand, the frame-to-frame matching defines a graph whose vertices are features in 3D space. The efficiency of the approach is increased by minimizing the geometric and algebraic errors to estimate the final displacement of the stereo camera between consecutive acquired frames. The proposed approach has been tested for mobile robotics navigation purposes in real environments and using different features. Experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposal, which could be applied in both industrial and service robot fields

    Localization of Mobile Robots Using Odometry and an External Vision Sensor

    This paper presents a sensor system for robot localization based on the information obtained from a single camera attached in a fixed place external to the robot. Our approach firstly obtains the 3D geometrical model of the robot based on the projection of its natural appearance in the camera while the robot performs an initialization trajectory. This paper proposes a structure-from-motion solution that uses the odometry sensors inside the robot as a metric reference. Secondly, an online localization method based on a sequential Bayesian inference is proposed, which uses the geometrical model of the robot as a link between image measurements and pose estimation. The online approach is resistant to hard occlusions and the experimental setup proposed in this paper shows its effectiveness in real situations. The proposed approach has many applications in both the industrial and service robot fields

    Valuing beyond economics : a pluralistic evaluation framework for participatory policymaking

    The sustainability challenges facing societies call for policies and governance systems that are attuned to the diversity of goods that support and enrich human life via ecological, technical and other kinds of systems, and to the plurality of values that people hold across diverse cultures and belief systems. A pluralistic evaluation framework (PEF) is here presented as a tool for considering diverse kinds of goodness as perceived by diverse stakeholders in the design and evaluation of policies or projects. It arises from considering a suite of aspects of meaning (biotic, economic, aesthetic, etc.) at each of three stages, namely: identifying relevant stakeholders, mapping real-world systems and assessing modes of valuing. This framework, drawing on the philosophical work of Herman Dooyeweerd and Dirk Vollenhoven, offers a joined-up, participatory approach to policymaking. We report pilot trials of the PEF with groups of policymakers at a series of workshops, demonstrating that it provides additional perspectives and unification of core issues and can be used in a wide range of areas of policymaking and project assessment. We also illustrate its potential application to a controversial environmental project and outline how a pluralistic evaluation framework can be used in tandem with existing frameworks
