An Empirical Study of a Software Maintenance Process

This paper describes how a process support tool is used to collect metrics about a major upgrade to our own electronic retail system. An incremental prototyping lifecycle is adopted in which each increment is categorised by an effort type and a project component. Effort types are Acquire, Build, Comprehend and Design and span all phases of development. Project components include data models and process models expressed in an OO modelling language and process algebra respectively as well as C++ classes and function templates and build components including source files and data files. This categorisation is independent of incremental prototyping and equally applicable to other software lifecycles. The process support tool (PWI) is responsible for ensuring the consistency between the models and the C++ source. It also supports the interaction between multiple developers and multiple metric-collectors. The first two releases of the retailing software are available for ftp from oracle.ecs.soton.ac.uk in directory pub/peter. Readers are invited to use the software and apply their own metrics as appropriate. We would be interested to correspond with anyone who does so

Journal publishing with Acrobat: the CAJUN project

    Get PDF
The publication of material in electronic form should ideally preserve, in a unified document representation, all of the richness of the printed document while maintaining enough of its underlying structure to enable searching and other forms of semantic processing. Until recently it has been hard to find a document representation which combined these attributes and which also stood some chance of becoming a de facto multi-platform standard. This paper sets out experience gained within the Electronic Publishing Research Group at the University of Nottingham in using Adobe Acrobat software and its underlying PDF (Portable Document Format) notation. The CAJUN project1 (CD-ROM Acrobat Journals Using Networks) began in 1993 and has used Acrobat software to produce electronic versions of journal papers for network and CD-ROM dissemination. The paper describes the project's progress so far and also gives a brief assessment of PDF's suitability as a universal document interchange standard

Development of a new machine system for the forming of micro-sheet-products

    Get PDF
Most of the developed micro-forming machines were based on standalone concepts which do not support efficient integration to make them fully automated and integrated. At present, material feeding in micro-forming is not of sufficient precision and reliability for high throughput manufacturing applications. Precise feeding is necessary to ensure that micro-parts can be produced with sufficient accuracy, especially in multi-stage forming, while high-speed feeding is a must to meet the production-rate requirements. Therefore, design of a new high-precision and high-speed feeder for micro-forming is proposed. Several possible approaches are examined with a view to establishing feasible concepts. Based on the investigation, several concepts for thin sheet-metal feeding for micro-forming are generated, they being argued and assessed with applicable loads and forces analysis. These form a basis of designing a new feeder

Agriculture Environmental Management System Electronic Manure Handling Process Map

    Get PDF
Utah State University Cooperative Extension Agriculture Environmental Management Systems participants developed an electronic process flow method for identifying aspects and assessing impacts from the manure handling systems on animal feeding operations. This method breaks the manure handling system into manageable portions by delineating every process and support activity on a process flow diagram. Then each process and activity is individually examined to identify associated aspects. This approach expedites the identification of aspects in relation to those processes and activities. It also fulfills the operational control condition to identify those operations and activities that are associated with identified significant environmental aspects

Probing New Physics via an Angular Analysis of B --> V1 V2 decays

We show that an angular analysis of B --> V1 V2 decays yields numerous tests for new physics in the decay amplitudes. Unlike direct CP asymmetries, many of these new-physics observables are nonzero even if the strong phase differences vanish. For certain observables, neither time-dependent measurements nor tagging is necessary. Should a signal for new physics be found, one can place a lower limit on the size of the new-physics parameters, as well as on their effect on the measurement of the phase of B0--Bbar0 mixing.Comment: 9 pages, plain latex, no figures. Title modified slightly. Paragraph added about viability of method. Conclusions unchanged. To be published in Europhysics Letter

Designing intervention strategies for forestry seedling production in the Philippines

    Get PDF
The forest nursery sector in the Philippines is not delivering high quality planting stock of a wide species base for tree farming and reforestation programs. The ACIAR Seedling Enhancement Project, funded by ACIAR, has been implemented to address this problem. The project uses a systems approach and has developed a Bayesian Belief Network (BBN) to analyse the forest nursery system and investigate the relationship between factors affecting seedling quality and the operational effectiveness of the forest nursery sector. A workshop with various stakeholders was held to demonstrate the interactions among nursery system components using the BBN and to identify potential policy interventions. Stakeholders revealed three main themes, namely Market for seedling and timber (i.e. poor market of timber and seedlings), Funding of nurseries (i.e. budget) and Seedling quality (i.e. low quality of forest reproductive material) as potential leverage areas for improving the operational effectiveness of the forest nursery sector. Nursery accreditation, capacity building, increased seedling sales and an improved pathway of high quality germplasm were identified as major interventions. Further, policy reform was deemed necessary to create market-driven incentives for accredited nurseries and for government nursery operation to support the existence of private nurseries. The Seedling Enhancement Project has commenced pilot testing specific policy interventions
