A Deep ROSAT HRI Observation of NGC 1313
We describe a series of observations of NGC 1313 using the ROSAT HRI with a
combined exposure time of 183.5 ksec. The observations span an interval between
1992 and 1998; the purpose of observations since 1994 was to monitor the X-ray
flux of SN1978K, one of several luminous sources in the galaxy. No diffuse
emission is detected in the galaxy to a level of ~1-2x10^37 ergs/s/arcmin^-2. A
total of eight sources are detected in the summed image within the D_25
diameter of the galaxy. The luminosities of five of the eight range from
\~6x10^37 to ~6x10^38 erg/s; these sources are most likely accreting X-ray
binaries, similar to sources obseved in M31 and M33. The remaining three
sources all emit above 10^39 erg/s. We present light curves of the five
brightest sources. Variability is detected at the 99.9% level from four of
these. We identify one of the sources as an NGC 1313 counterpart of a Galactic
X-ray source. The light curve, though crudely sampled, most closely resembles
that of a Galactic black hole candidate such as GX339-4, but with considerably
higher peak X-ray luminosity. An additional seven sources lie outside of the

Optical Polarization and Spectral Variability in the M87 Jet
During the last decade, M87's jet has been the site of an extraordinary
variability event, with one knot (HST-1) increasing by over a factor 100 in
brightness. Variability was also seen on timescales of months in the nuclear
flux. Here we discuss the optical-UV polarization and spectral variability of
these components, which show vastly different behavior. HST-1 shows a highly
significant correlation between flux and polarization, with P increasing from
at minimum to >40% at maximum, while the orientation of its electric
vector stayed constant. HST-1's optical-UV spectrum is very hard
(, ), and displays "hard lags"
during epochs 2004.9-2005.5, including the peak of the flare, with soft lags at
later epochs. We interpret the behavior of HST-1 as enhanced particle
acceleration in a shock, with cooling from both particle aging and the
relaxation of the compression. We set 2 upper limits of
parsecs and 1.02 on the size and advance speed of the flaring region. The
slight deviation of the electric vector orientation from the jet PA, makes it
likely that on smaller scales the flaring region has either a double or twisted
structure. By contrast, the nucleus displays much more rapid variability, with
a highly variable electric vector orientation and 'looping' in the
plane. The nucleus has a much steeper spectrum () but
does not show UV-optical spectral variability. Its behavior can be interpreted
as either a helical distortion to a steady jet or a shock propagating through a

Quantifying the Origin and Distribution of Intracluster Light in a Fornax-like Cluster
Using a cosmological -body simulation, we investigate the origin and
distribution of stars in the intracluster light (ICL) of a Fornax-like cluster.
In a dark matter only simulation we identify a halo which, at , has and , and replace infalling
subhalos with models that include spheroid and disc components. As they fall
into the cluster, the stars in some of these galaxies are stripped from their
hosts, and form the ICL. We consider the separate contributions to the ICL from
stars which originate in the haloes and the discs of the galaxies. We find that
disc ICL stars are more centrally concentrated than halo ICL stars. The
majority of the disc ICL stars are associated with one initially disc-dominated
galaxy that falls to the centre of the cluster and is heavily disrupted,
producing part of the cD galaxy. At radial distances greater than 200kpc, well
beyond the stellar envelope of the cD galaxy, stars formerly from the stellar
haloes of galaxies dominate the ICL. Therefore at large distances, the ICL

Cardiac Effects of a Single Dose of Pimobendan in Cats With Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy; A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Crossover Study
Background: Pimobendan has been shown to impart a significant survival benefit in cardiomyopathic cats who receive it as part of heart failure therapy. However, use of pimobendan remains controversial in cats with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) due to lack of pharmacodynamic data for pimobendan in cats with HCM and due to theoretical concerns for exacerbating left ventricular outflow tract obstructions. Hypothesis/Objectives: Our objective was to investigate the cardiac effects of pimobendan in cats with HCM. We hypothesized that pimobendan would not exacerbate left ventricular outflow tract obstructions and that it would improve echocardiographic measures of diastolic function. Animals: Thirteen purpose-bred cats were studied from a research colony with naturally-occurring HCM due to a variant in myosin binding protein C. Methods: Cats underwent two examinations 24 h apart with complete standard echocardiography. On their first day of evaluation, they were randomized to receive oral placebo or 1.25 mg pimobendan 1 h prior to exam. On their second examination, they were crossed over and received the remaining treatment. Investigators were blinded to all treatments. Results: The pimobendan group had a significant increase in left atrial fractional shortening (pimobendan group 41.7% ± 5.9; placebo group 36.1% ± 6.0; p = 0.04). There was no significant difference in left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) velocities between the groups (pimobendan group 2.8 m/s ± 0.8; placebo group 2.6 m/s ± 1.0). There were no significant differences between the number of cats with LVOT obstructions between groups (12 in pimobendan group; 11 in placebo group; p = 1.00). There were no detectable differences in any systolic measures, including left ventricular fractional shortening, mitral annular plane systolic excursion, and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion. Doppler-based diastolic function assessment was precluded by persistent tachycardia. Conclusions: Improved left atrial function in the pimobendan group could explain some of the reported survival benefit for HCM cats in CHF. Pimobendan did not exacerbate LVOT obstructions and thus may not be contraindicated in HCM cats with LVOT obstructions. The ACS Fornax Cluster Survey. IX. The Color-Magnitude Relation of Globular Cluster Systems
We investigate the color-magnitude relation for globular clusters (GCs) --
the so-called "blue tilt" -- detected in the ACS Fornax Cluster Survey and
using the combined sample of GCs from the ACS Fornax and Virgo Cluster Surveys.
We find a tilt of gamma_z=d(g-z)/dz=-0.0257 +- 0.0050 for the full GC sample of
the Fornax Cluster Survey (~5800 GCs). This is slightly shallower than the
value gamma_z=-0.0459 +- 0.0048 found for the Virgo Cluster Survey GC sample
(~11100 GCs). The slope for the merged Fornax and Virgo datasets (~16900 GCs)
is gamma_z=-0.0293 +- 0.0085, corresponding to a mass-metallicity relation of Z
~ M^0.43. We find that the blue tilt sets in at GC masses in excess of M ~
2*10^5 M_sun. The tilt is stronger for GCs belonging to high-mass galaxies (M_*
> 5 * 10^10 M_sun) than for those in low-mass galaxies (M_* < 5 * 10^10 M_sun).
It is also more pronounced for GCs with smaller galactocentric distances. Our
findings suggest a range of mass-metallicity relations Z_GC ~ M_GC^(0.3-0.7)
which vary as a function of host galaxy mass/luminosity. We compare our
observations to a recent model of star cluster self-enrichment with generally
favorable results. We suggest that, within the context of this model, the
proto-cluster clouds out of which the GCs formed may have had density profiles
slightly steeper than isothermal and/or star formation efficiencies somewhat
below 0.3. We caution, however, that the significantly different appearance of
the CMDs defined by the GC systems associated with galaxies of similar mass and
morphological type pose a challenge to any single mechanism that seeks to
explain the blue tilt. We therefore suggest that the merger/accretion histories
of individual galaxies have played a non-negligible role determining the
distribution of GCs in the CMDs of individual GC systems
Enhancing access to alcohol use disorder pharmacotherapy and treatment in primary care settings: ADaPT-PC.
BACKGROUND: Only 7.8 % of individuals meeting diagnostic criteria for alcohol use disorder (AUD) receive treatment in a given year. Most individuals with AUDs are identified in primary care (PC) settings and referred to substance use disorders (SUD) clinics; however, only a minority of those referred attend treatment services. Safe and effective pharmacological treatments for AUD exist, but they are rarely prescribed by PC providers. The objective of this study is to refine, implement, and evaluate an intervention to integrate pharmacological AUD treatment options into PC settings. This paper provides a detailed description of the intervention design and the evaluation components.
METHODS/DESIGN: Three large Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities are participating in the intervention. The intervention targets stakeholder groups with tailored strategies based on implementation theory and prior research identifying barriers to implementation of AUD pharmacotherapy. Local SUD providers and primary care mental health integration (PCMHI) providers are trained to serve as local implementation/clinical champions and receive external facilitation. PC providers receive access to consultation from local and national clinical champions, educational materials, and a dashboard of patients with AUD on their caseloads for case identification. Veterans with AUD diagnoses receive educational information in the mail just prior to a scheduled PC visit. Effectiveness of the intervention will be evaluated through an interrupted time series with matched controls to monitor change in facility level AUD pharmacotherapy prescribing rates. Following Stetler\u27s four-phase formative evaluation (FE) strategy, FE methods include (1) developmental FE (pre-implementation interviews with champions, PC providers, and Veterans), (2) implementation-focused FE (tracking attendance at facilitation meetings, academic detailing efforts by local champions, and patient dashboard utilization), (3) progress-focused FE (tracking rates of AUD pharmacotherapy prescribing and rates of referral to PCMHI and SUD specialty care), and (4) interpretive FE (post-implementation interviews with champions and PC providers). Analysis of FE data will be guided by the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR).
DISCUSSION: If demonstrated to be successful, this implementation strategy will provide a replicable, feasible, and relative low-cost method for integrating AUD treatment services into PC settings, thereby increasing access to AUD treatment

Optical and IR Photometry of Globular Clusters in NGC1399: Evidence for Color-Metallicity Nonlinearity
We combine new Wide Field Camera~3 IR Channel (WFC3/IR) F160W (H) imaging
data for NGC1399, the central galaxy in the Fornax cluster, with archival F475W
(g), F606W (V), F814W (I), and F850LP (z) optical data from the Advanced Camera
for Surveys (ACS). The purely optical g-I, V-I, and g-z colors of NGC1399's
rich globular cluster (GC) system exhibit clear bimodality, at least for
magnitudes . The optical-IR I-H color distribution appears
unimodal, and this impression is confirmed by mixture modeling analysis. The
V-H colors show marginal evidence for bimodality, consistent with bimodality in
V-I and unimodality in I-H. If bimodality is imposed for I-H with a double
Gaussian model, the preferred blue/red split differs from that for optical
colors; these "differing bimodalities" mean that the optical and optical-IR
colors cannot both be linearly proportional to metallicity. Consistent with the
differing color distributions, the dependence of I-H on g-I for the matched GC
sample is significantly nonlinear, with an inflection point near the trough in
the g-I color distribution; the result is similar for the I-H dependence on g-z
colors taken from the ACS Fornax Cluster Survey. These g-z colors have been
calibrated empirically against metallicity; applying this calibration yields a
continuous, skewed, but single-peaked metallicity distribution. Taken together,
these results indicate that nonlinear color-metallicity relations play an
important role in shaping the observed bimodal distributions of optical colors
