    Extended X-ray emission around four 3C quasars at 0.55<z<0.75 observed with Chandra

    We report on the detection of a soft spatially-extended component of X-ray emission around four intermediate-redshift 3C quasars observed with Chandra: 3C254, 3C263, 3C275.1 and 3C281. The bolometric luminosity of this emission ranges over 0.3-1.6 times 10^{44}erg/s, and extends to lengthscales of over 350 kpc at the redshift of the quasar. The X-rays are most likely thermal emission from the intracluster medium of a cluster of galaxies around each quasar, which provides the working surface for the powerful radio lobes.     A Chandra study of particle acceleration in the multiple hotspots of nearby radio galaxies

    We present Chandra observations of a small sample of nearby classical double radio galaxies which have more than one radio hotspot in at least one of their lobes. The X-ray emission from the hotspots of these comparatively low-power objects is expected to be synchrotron in origin, and therefore to provide information about the locations of high-energy particle acceleration. In some models of the relationship between the jet and hotspot the hotspots that are not the current jet termination point should be detached from the energy supply from the active nucleus and therefore not capable of accelerating particles to high energies. We find that in fact some secondary hotspots are X-ray sources, and thus probably locations for high-energy particle acceleration after the initial jet termination shock. In detail, though, we show that the spatial structures seen in X-ray are not consistent with naive expectations from a simple shock model: the current locations of the acceleration of the highest-energy observable particles in powerful radio galaxies need not be coincident with the peaks of radio or even optical emission.Comment: Accepted for ApJ. 33 pages, 8 figures inc. 2 in colo

    X-linked cone photoreceptor disorders caused by mutations in the OPN1LW (L) and OPN1MW (M) cone opsin genes on chromosome Xq28 include a range of conditions from mild stable red-green colour vision deficiencies to severe cone dystrophies causing progressive loss of vision and blindness. Advances in molecular genotyping and functional analyses of causative variants, combined with deep retinal phenotyping, are unravelling genetic mechanisms underlying the variability of cone opsin disorders.

    Analysis of tender sum forecasting by quantity surveyors and contractors in South Africa

    Although extensive research has been undertaken on the accuracy of quantity surveyors' tender price forecasts, very little of this research contains information relating to the factors affecting tender sum forecasting by quantity surveyors and contractors. The primary objective of this empirical study was to gain insight into the factors influencing both quantity surveyors' and contractors' tender price forecasts. This was achieved through an analysis of tender information relating to 278 projects for a fifteen-year period and collected from 30 quantity-surveying practices and MBATA tender records. The analysis of South African tender information reported in this article indicates an average forecast performance by quantity surveyors of 8.33% (std dev (standard deviation) = 11,183, CV (coefficient of variation) = 134,2%). The variability of contractors' tenders ranged from 0,37% to 46,53%, with a mean of 5,65% (std dev = 5,22, SE (standard error) = 0,313). Furthermore, there is no evidence to suggest that forecast performance is dependent on type of project, client, function of project, size of project, location of project and number of bidders. The contractor's results suggest that local authority projects are associated with high variability of their tender sum forecasts. The only factor, which shows significance for quantity surveyors, is the date of tender which may tend to point to the importance of market conditions and economic cycle in the tender sum forecast performance of South African quantity surveyors

    The Hard X-Ray View of Reflection, Absorption, and the Disk-Jet Connection in the Radio-Loud AGN 3C 33

    We present results from Suzaku and Swift observations of the nearby radio galaxy 3C 33, and investigate the nature of absorption, reflection, and jet production in this source. We model the 0.5-100 keV nuclear continuum with a power law that is transmitted either through one or more layers of pc-scale neutral material, or through a modestly ionized pc-scale obscurer. The standard signatures of reflection from a neutral accretion disk are absent in 3C 33: there is no evidence of a relativistically blurred Fe Kα\alpha emission line, and no Compton reflection hump above 10 keV. We find the upper limit to the neutral reflection fraction is R<0.41 for an e-folding energy of 1 GeV. We observe a narrow, neutral Fe Kα\alpha line, which is likely to originate at least 2,000 R_s from the black hole. We show that the weakness of reflection features in 3C 33 is consistent with two interpretations: either the inner accretion flow is highly ionized, or the black-hole spin configuration is retrograde with respect to the accreting material.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, 4 tables.     New Chandra observations have resolved the structure of the X-ray luminous southern hotspot in the giant radio quasar 4C74.26 into two distinct features. The nearer one to the nucleus is an extremely luminous peak, extended some 5 kpc perpendicular to the orientation of the jet; 19 kpc projected further away from the central nucleus than this is a fainter X-ray arc having similar symmetry. This arc is co-spatial with near-IR and optical emission imaged with Gemini, and radio emission imaged with MERLIN. The angular separation of the double shock structure (itself ~19 kpc or 10 arcsec in size) from the active nucleus which fuels them of ~550 kpc is a reminder of the challenge of connecting "unidentified" hard X-ray or Fermi sources with their origins.Comment: In press at MNRA

    Sub-Arcsecond Imaging of 3C123:108-GHz Continuum Observations of the Radio Hotspots

    We present the results of sub-arcsecond 108 GHz continuum interferometric observations toward the radio luminous galaxy 3C123. Using multi-array observations, we utilize the high u,v dynamic range of the BIMA millimeter array to sample fully spatial scales ranging from 0.5" to 50". This allows us to make one-to-one comparisons of millimeter-wavelength emission in the radio lobes and hotspots to VLA centimeter observations at 1.4, 4.9, 8.4, and 15 GHz. At 108 GHz, the bright, eastern double hotspot in the southern lobe is resolved. This is only the second time that a multiple hotspot region has been resolved in the millimeter regime. We model the synchrotron spectra of the hotspots and radio lobes using simple broken power-law models with high energy cutoffs, and discuss the hotspot spectra and their implications for models of multiple hotspot formation.Comment: 16 pages, 3 Figures, ApJ Accepte

    Shocked Molecular Hydrogen in the 3C 326 Radio Galaxy System

    The Spitzer spectrum of the giant FR II radio galaxy 3C 326 is dominated by very strong molecular hydrogen emission lines on a faint IR continuum. The H2 emission originates in the northern component of a double-galaxy system associated with 3C 326. The integrated luminosity in H2 pure-rotational lines is 8.0E41 erg/s, which corresponds to 17% of the 8-70 micron luminosity of the galaxy. A wide range of temperatures (125-1000 K) is measured from the H2 0-0 S(0)-S(7) transitions, leading to a warm H2 mass of 1.1E9 Msun. Low-excitation ionic forbidden emission lines are consistent with an optical LINER classification for the active nucleus, which is not luminous enough to power the observed H2 emission. The H2 could be shock-heated by the radio jets, but there is no direct indication of this. More likely, the H2 is shock-heated in a tidal accretion flow induced by interaction with the southern companion galaxy. The latter scenario is supported by an irregular morphology, tidal bridge, and possible tidal tail imaged with IRAC at 3-9 micron. Unlike ULIRGs, which in some cases exhibit H2 line luminosities of comparable strength, 3C 326 shows little star-formation activity (~0.1 Msun/yr). This may represent an important stage in galaxy evolution.     Extended soft X-ray emission in 3CR radio galaxies at z < 0.3: High Excitation and Broad Line Galaxies

    We analyze Chandra observations of diffuse soft X-ray emission associated with a complete sample of 3CR radio galaxies at z < 0.3. In this paper we focus on the properties of the spectroscopic sub-classes of high excitation galaxies (HEGs) and broad line objects (BLOs). Among the 33 HEGs we detect extended (or possibly extended) emission in about 40% of the sources; the fraction is even higher (8/10) restricting the analysis to the objects with exposure times larger than 10 ks. In the 18 BLOs, extended emission is seen only in 2 objects; this lower detection rate can be ascribed to the presence of their bright X-ray nuclei that easily outshine any genuine diffuse emission. A very close correspondence between the soft X-ray and optical line morphology emerges. We also find that the ratio between [O III] and extended soft X-ray luminosity is confined within a factor of 2 around a median value of 5. Both results are similar to what is seen in Seyfert galaxies. We discuss different processes that could explain the soft X-ray emission and conclude that the photoionization of extended gas, coincident with the narrow line region, is the favored mechanism.Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures.
