Introduction. Patients with glomerulonephritis (GN) require special nursing care that should affect their functioning in the holistic dimension. The aim of the study was to formulate a nursing care plan for a patient with GN using the ICNP® terminology. Materials and methods. The research was conducted at the Clinic of Nephrology, Transplantology and Internal Diseases in the University Clinical Centre in Gdańsk and involved a 32-year-old patient. The research employed the case study method and the technique of the interview, observation, analysis of medical records and measurements. Results and conclusions. A total of 14 ICNP® diagnoses were established and formulated in the patient: impaired kidney function, proteinuria, altered blood pressure, peripheral oedema, fatigue, pain, risk for haemorrhaging, risk for medication side effect, risk for infection, relocation stress, anxiety, depressed mood, lack of knowledge of disease, lack of knowledge of dietary regime. The nursing interventions required by the patient included: monitoring of vital signs, participating in the pharmacotherapy, monitoring the intensity of complaints, assessing the patient’s level of knowledge about the disease, self-monitoring and recommendations, as well as health education of the patient

Vertical distribution of cyanobacteria biomass and cyanotoxin production in the polymictic Siemianówka Dam Reservoir (eastern Poland)

Abstract. The summer-autumn dominance of the toxic cyanobacterium Planktothrix agardhii was described in the lowland polymictic Siemianówka Dam Reservoir (SDR) in 2010 and 2011. The study was conducted at a station located in the deepest part of the reservoir. The species composition of phytoplankton was very similar at the four depths analyzed. Microcystins were continually present in the cyanobacterial biomass. Demethylated microcystin-RR (dmMC-RR) and microcystin-RR (MC-RR) were identified as the major microcystin variants in most samples, while demethylated microcystin-LR (dmMC-LR) and microcystin-LR (MC-LR) were each recorded only once. The concentration of microcystin-RR correlated strongly with the biomass of P. agardhii. The effect of environmental factors on cyanobacterial biomass the production of microcystins by cyanobacteria was minor, but increased water temperatures and pH favored the production of microcystins. Phytoplankton biomass was also influenced by how water outflow from the reservoir was regulated; the biomas increased with depth when the upper flaps were opened, but it was very similar throughout the water column when they were closed. According to the Polish phytoplankton-based index (IFPL), the ecological potential of the reservoir was determined to be poor

The vast number of academic institutions in the U.K and the pre-requisite of a library in each of them calls for employment of a huge workforce. The process is systematic, time bound and free of any bias due to the nature and type of the sub processes involved. This paper seeks to enumerate and explain the procedure of recruitment in academic libraries in the U.K right from the advertisement to the selection and induction stage. It is envisaged that this paper will help applicants as well as employers both from the U.K and other countries to understand the process and compare it with their own

Endometriosis: Pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and the role of gut microbiota

    Get PDF
Endometriosis is a common disease. It affects 5-10% of women of reproductive age worldwide. However, despite the prevalence, diagnosis is typically delayed by years, misdiagnosis is common, and effective treatment takes years to achieve. Determining the mechanisms involved in its pathogenesis is vital, not only to pave the way for early identification, but also for disease management and development of less invasive but successful treatment strategies. Three main typed of endometriosis have been described in literature: peritoneal, ovarian and deep infiltrative. This is mainly due to the most common locations of ectopis endometrium. .Determining the precise pathogenesis of endometriosis has proved challenging and controversial for gynecologists, endocrinologists and researchers, but recent studies have focused on finding answers. This disease is often asymptomatic and diagnosed incidentally during various surgical interventions or follow-up gynecological examinations. Epidemiological research reports that women with this disease are more vulnerable to ovarian and breast cancer, asthma, skin cancer suhc as melanoma, cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis. The connection of the gut microbiota and endometriosis is nowadays higly suspected to exist. Scientists are focused on the influence of the microbiome on estrogens, estrogens-dependent disorders, immune system and inflammation. It is strongly velieved that correction of the gut microbiota with antibiotica, probiotics, or fecal bacterial transplantation sie a hopeful method for improving the clinical management of endometriosis. &nbsp

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus type II (DM2) is one of the most frequently diagnosed diseases worldwide with a constantly increasing prevalence. It represents an important clinical challenge. The studies are concentrating on improving our knowledge of both pathogenesis and therapeutic opportunities. The influence of intestinal flora on many health conditions is being investigated. It was found that the gut microbiota of the healthy and diabetic individuals are different. This provides a highly important focus for the consideration of whether and how, based on the content of the intestinal flora, the development and treatment of this disease and its complications can be affected. PURPOSE: The aim of the study is to present the current state of knowledge about the The role of the gut microbiota in the pathogenesis and therapy of type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The available literature in PubMed was reviewed to write the article, using the keywords ,,gut microbiota diabetes”, ,,diabetes mellitus”, ,,intestinal microbiome diabetes”, ,,dysbiosis diabetes” and ,,gut microbiota diabetes”. CONCLUSION: The intestinal microbiome is a diverse community of microorganisms that inhabit the gut and has been shown to be essential for the health of the body. Modifications in the diversity and frequency of microorganisms residing in the gut, and the accumulation of metabolites they generate, have been correlated with DM2. The study of intestinal microflora could lead to the discovery of new methods of diagnosis and therapies of DM2 and its complications, such as diabetic kidney disease, neuropathy, retinopathy and cardiovascular disease. In conclusion, further studies are needed to understand the role of the gut microbiome in the pathogenesis and therapy of DM2
