    Calculation of nanowire thermal conductivity using complete phonon dispersion relations

    The lattice thermal conductivity of crystalline Si nanowires is calculated. The calculation uses complete phonon dispersions, and does not require any externally imposed frequency cutoffs. No adjustment to nanowire thermal conductivity measurements is required. Good agreement with experimental results for nanowires wider than 35 nm is obtained. A formulation in terms of the transmission function is given. Also, the use of a simpler, nondispersive "Callaway formula", is discussed from the complete dispersions perspective.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Accepted in Phys. Rev.

    Two-fermion bound state in a Bose-Einstein condensate

    A nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation is derived for the dynamics of a beam of ultracold fermionic atoms traversing a Bose-Einstein condensate. The condensate phonon modes are shown to provide a nonlinear medium for the fermionic atoms. A two-fermion bound state is predicted to arise, and the signature of the bound state in a nonlinear atom optics experiment is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure

    The effects of citrate dialysate in hemodialysis on polymorphonuclear elastase interaction with tissue factor and its inhibitor

    Background: This study aimed to investigate whether hemodialysis (HD) affects tissue factor (TF), tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI), and polymorphonuclear elastase (PMNE) in endstage renal disease (ESRD) patients when eliminating the effects of heparin. Also, to explore the interaction of TF, TFPI, and PMNE throughout a single HD session. Methods: We enrolled 57 ESRD patients who had undergone hemodialysis for >3 months as an experimental group. Plasma levels of TF, TFPI and PMNE were measured by ELISA in 24 ERSD patients on intermittent HD using low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) as anticoagulation (LMWH group) and 33 ESRD patients using citrate as anticoagulation (citrate group) at the start and at 1, 2 and 5 h of the HD session. Meanwhile,28 ESRD patients not on dialysis were enrolled as a control group and fasting venous blood samples were taken in the morning. Results: Compared with the control group, the plasma TFPI levels of the LMWH group and the citrate group were significantly higher (P=0.000, P=0.002, respectively) under baseline conditions as well as the plasma PMNE levels (P=0.001, P=0.02, respectively), whereas TF showed no difference (P=0.186). During HD with citrate, plasma TFPI decreased slightly (P=0.012) and PMNE increased significantly (P=0.008) at 1 h. The plasma TFPI levels of the citrate group correlate with PMNE at 2 and 5 h (P=0.001, P=0.008, respectively). Conclusions: ESRD patients on HD have significantly higher TFPI and PMNE levels compared to patients not on HD under baseline conditions, while TF levels were similar between the three groups. TFPI and PMNE are differently regulated, but the plasma levels correlated during HD in the citrate group. It might be possible that PMNE plays a role in anticoagulative activity through TFPI

    Magnetism in a lattice of spinor Bose condensates

    We study the ground state magnetic properties of ferromagnetic spinor Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a deep optical lattices. In the Mott insulator regime, the ``mini-condensates'' at each lattice site behave as mesoscopic spin magnets that can interact with neighboring sites through both the static magnetic dipolar interaction and the light-induced dipolar interaction. We show that such an array of spin magnets can undergo a ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic phase transition under the magnetic dipolar interaction depending on the dimension of the confining optical lattice.     Extended Birkhoff's Theorem in the f(T) Gravity

    The f(T) theory, a generally modified teleparallel gravity, has been proposed as an alternative gravity model to account for the dark energy phenomena. Following our previous work [Xin-he Meng and Ying-bin Wang, EPJC(2011), arXiv:1107.0629v1], we prove that the Birkhoff's theorem holds in a more general context, specifically with the off diagonal tetrad case, in this communication letter. Then, we discuss respectively the results of the external vacuum and internal gravitational field in the f(T) gravity framework, as well as the extended meaning of this theorem. We also investigate the validity of the Birkhoff's theorem in the frame of f(T) gravity via conformal transformation by regarding the Brans-Dicke-like scalar as effective matter, and study the equivalence between both Einstein frame and Jordan frame.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to EPJ-C. arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:1107.062

    Electroweak Baryogenesis: Concrete in a SUSY Model with a Gauge Singlet

    SUSY models with a gauge singlet easily allow for a strong first order electroweak phase transition (EWPT) if the vevs of the singlet and Higgs fields are of comparable size. We discuss the profile of the stationary expanding bubble wall and CP-violation in the effective potential, in particular transitional CP-violation inside the bubble wall during the EWPT. The dispersion relations for charginos contain CP-violating terms in the WKB approximation. These enter as source terms in the Boltzmann equations for the (particle--antiparticle) chemical potentials and fuel the creation of a baryon asymmetry through the weak sphaleron in the hot phase.     Birkhoff's Theorem in f(T) Gravity up to the Perturbative Order

    f(T) gravity, a generally modified teleparallel gravity, has become very popular in recent times as it is able to reproduce the unification of inflation and late-time acceleration without the need of a dark energy component or an inflation field. In this present work, we investigate specifically the range of validity of Birkhoff's theorem with the general tetrad field via perturbative approach. At zero order, Birkhoff's theorem is valid and the solution is the well known Schwarzschild-(A)dS metric. Then considering the special case of the diagonal tetrad field, we present a new spherically symmetric solution in the frame of f(T) gravity up to the perturbative order. The results with the diagonal tetrad field satisfy the physical equivalence between the Jordan and the so-called Einstein frames, which are realized via conformal transformation, at least up to the first perturbative order.Comment: 8 pages, no figure.     Risk Factors for Positive Deep Pelvic Nodal Involvement in Patients with Palpable Groin Melanoma Metastases: Can the Extent of Surgery be Safely Minimized?: A Retrospective, Multicenter Cohort Study

    Background: Patients with palpable melanoma groin metastases have a poor prognosis. There is debate whether a combined superficial and deep groin dissection (CGD) is necessary or if superficial groin dissection (SGD) alone is sufficient. Aim: The aim of this study was to analyze risk factors for deep pelvic nodal involvement in a retrospective, multicenter cohort of palpable groin melanoma metastases. This could aid in the development of an algorithm for selective surgery in the future. Methods: This study related to 209 therapeutic CGDs from four tertiary centers in The Netherlands (1992–2013), selected based on complete preoperative imaging and pathology reports. Analyzed risk factors included baseline and primary tumor characteristics, total and positive number of inguinal nodes, inguinal lymph node ratio (LNR) and positive deep pelvic nodes on imaging (computed tomography [CT] ± positron emission tomography [PET], or PET − low-dose CT).
