    Studies of leaching, recovery and recycling of heavy metals

    The leachability of cadmium, cobalt, copper, lead, nickel and zinc metals and their oxides, sulfides and carbonates by water, 0.5 mol dm-3 CH3COOH, 0.1 mol dm -3 HCl/NaCI (1: 1 mixture) and 2 mol dm -3 HNO3 is reported. The concentrations of the leached heavy metals are compared with the trigger levels set by World Health Organisation (WHO). Three leaching solutions (nitric, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids) were used to extract copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, iron and lead from spent catalysts prior to the application of separation technologies. Leaching experiments were conducted using both traditional methods and a microwave-assisted extraction technique. Data are provided on the effects of leaching temperature, leaching time, solid to liquid ratio and acid concentration on the extraction of different metals. The use of 2 mol dm-3 sulfuric acid at 50°C for 60 minutes and at a solid/liquid (S/L) ratio of 1: 25 achieved more than 90% extraction for all the metals studied. A comparison of the results from traditional and microwave extraction techniques demonstrates that microwave heating reduced the time required to obtain maximum metal extraction. The kinetics for the traditional extraction procedure showed that diffusion was the ratecontrolling process, but it was not possible to conclusively establish the rate controlling process for the microwave leaching. The feasibility of using an electrodialysis process to separate metal ions, such as copper from zinc, was examined. A laboratory-scale three compartments membrane system was designed, constructed, used and optimised for the separation process. The separation of copper from zinc in the electrodialysis process exploited the greater stability of the Cu-EDTA complex compared with the Zn-EDTA complex. It was observed that Zn 2+ ions migrated through the cation-exchange membrane from central compartment to catholyte and, simultaneously, the negative Cu-EDTA complex transferred to the analyte compartment crossing the anion exchange membrane. The technique was successfully used to separate mixtures of Cu: Cd and Zn: Ni. The technique could not, however, be used for the separation of Zn from Cd. An adsorption process was used to prepare copper, iron, nickel and zinc oxides catalysts on y-A1203 as support. The materials prepared were used in a fixed bed reactor to assess the catalytic oxidation of volatile organic compounds (methane and ethane) in air. Cu/y- A1203 was found to be the most promising catalyst for the complete oxidation of methane and ethane at temperatures of 575°C and 525°C, respectively.     Evaluating open access journals using Semantic Web technologies and scorecards

    This paper describes a process to develop and publish a scorecard from an OAJ (Open Access Journal) on the Semantic Web using Linked Data technologies in such a way that it can be linked to related datasets. Furthermore, methodological guidelines are presented with activities related to each step of the process. The proposed process was applied to a university OAJ, including the definition of the KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) linked to the institutional strategies, the extraction, cleaning and loading of data from the data sources into a data mart, the transformation of data into RDF (Resource Description Framework), and the publication of data by means of a SPARQL endpoint using the Virtuoso software. Additionally, the RDF data cube vocabulary has been used to publish the multidimensional data on the Web. The visualization was made using CubeViz, a faceted browser to present the KPIs in interactive charts.This research was supported by National Polythecnic School of Quito, Ecuador.     The effects of short pulse laser surface cleaning on porosity formation and reduction in laser welding of aluminium alloy for automotive component manufacture

    Laser welding of aluminium alloys typically results in porosity in the fusion zones, leading to poor mechanical and corrosion performances. Mechanical and chemical cleaning of surfaces has been used previously to remove contaminants for weld joint preparations. However, these methods are slow, ineffective (e.g. due to hydrogen trapping) or lead to environmental hazards. This paper reports the effects of short pulsed laser surface cleaning on porosity formation and reduction in laser welding of AC-170PX (AA6014) aluminium sheets (coated with Ti/Zr and lubricated using a dry lubricant AlO70) with two types of joints: fillet edge and flange couch, using an AA4043 filler wire for automotive component assembly. The effect of laser cleaning on porosity reduction during laser welding using a filler wire has not been reported before. In this work, porosity and weld fusion zone geometry were examined prior to and after laser cleaning. The nanosecond pulsed Nd:YAG laser cleaning was found to reduce porosity significantly in the weld fusion zones. For the fillet edge welds, porosity was reduced to less than 0.5% compared with 10–80% without laser cleaning. For flange couch welds, porosity was reduced to 0.23–0.8% with laser cleaning from 0.7% to 4.3% without laser cleaning. This has been found to be due to the elimination of contaminations and oxide layers that contribute to the porosity formation. The laser cleaning is based on thermal ablation

    Formalizing enrichment mechanisms for bibliographic ontologies in the Semantic Web

    This paper presents an analysis of current limitations to the reuse of bibliographic data in the Semantic Web and a research proposal towards solutions to overcome them. The limitations identified derive from the insufficient convergence between existing bibliographic ontologies and the principles and techniques of linked open data (LOD); lack of a common conceptual framework for a diversity of standards often used together; reduced use of links to external vocabularies and absence of Semantic Web mechanisms to formalize relationships between vocabularies, as well as limitations of Semantic Web languages for the requirements of bibliographic data interoperability.     Experimental discrimination of ion stopping models near the Bragg peak in highly ionized matter

    The energy deposition of ions in dense plasmas is a key process in inertial confinement fusion that determines the α-particle heating expected to trigger a burn wave in the hydrogen pellet and resulting in high thermonuclear gain. However, measurements of ion stopping in plasmas are scarce and mostly restricted to high ion velocities where theory agrees with the data. Here, we report experimental data at low projectile velocities near the Bragg peak, where the stopping force reaches its maximum. This parameter range features the largest theoretical uncertainties and conclusive data are missing until today. The precision of our measurements, combined with a reliable knowledge of the plasma parameters, allows to disprove several standard models for the stopping power for beam velocities typically encountered in inertial fusion. On the other hand, our data support theories that include a detailed treatment of strong ion-electron collisions

    Camels and Climate Resilience: Adaptation in Northern Kenya

    In the drylands of Africa, pastoralists have been facing new challenges, including those related to environmental shocks and stresses. In northern Kenya, under conditions of reduced rainfall and more frequent droughts, one response has been for pastoralists to focus increasingly on camel herding. Camels have started to be kept at higher altitudes and by people who rarely kept camels before. The development has been understood as a climate change adaptation strategy and as a means to improve climate resilience. Since 2003, development organizations have started to further the trend by distributing camels in the region. Up to now, little has been known about the nature of, reasons for, or ramifications of the increased reliance on camels. The paper addresses these questions and concludes that camels improve resilience in this dryland region, but only under certain climate change scenarios, and only for some groups.This study was funded by The Royal Geographical Society with Institute of British Geographers Thesiger-Oman Fellowship
