Endurance Evaluation of Sintered, Porous, Strut-Supported Turbine Blades made by Federal-Mogul-Bower-Bearings, Incorporated, under Bureau of Aeronautics Contract NOas 55-124-C
Four strut-supported, transpiration-cooled turbine blades were investigated experimentally in a turbojet engine. The blade shells were fabricated by the mold-sintering method with spherical stainless-steel powder. Two blades were investigated in order to evolve suitable capping methods for the blade tip. Two other blades were used to evaluate the durability of the porous-shell material. The blades were investigated at a turbine-tip speed of 1305 feet per second, an average turbine-inlet temperature of about 1670 F, and at a porous-shell temperature limited to a maximum of approximately 1040 F
Ginzburg-Landau Theory of Josephson Field Effect Transistors
A theoretical model of high-T_c Josephson Field Effect Transistors (JoFETs)
based on a Ginzburg-Landau free energy expression whose parameters are field-
and spatially- dependent is developed. This model is used to explain
experimental data on JoFETs made by the hole-overdoped Ca-SBCO bicrystal
junctions (three terminal devices). The measurements showed a large modulation
of the critical current as a function of the applied voltage due to charge
modulation in the bicrystal junction. The experimental data agree with the
solutions of the theoretical model. This provides an explanation of the large
field effect, based on the strong suppresion of the carrier density near the
grain boundary junction in the absence of applied field and the subsequent
modulation of the density by the field.Comment: REVTEX, 4 figures upon request, submitted to Appl. Phys. Let
Cascade Investigation of Cooling Characteristics of a Cast-finned Air-cooled Turbine Blade for Use in a Turboprop Engine
Two apparent “counterexamples” to Marcus: A closer look
Abstract Marcus, Vijayan, Bandi Rao, Vishton's experiment (1999) concerning infant ability to discriminate between simple syntactic structures has prompted many connectionists to strive to demonstrate that certain types of neural networks can replicate those results. In this paper we take a closer look at two such attempts: Shultz & Bal

Porcine associated Salmonella Typhimuirum DT120: use of PFGE and MLVA in a putative outbreak investigation
In November 2006 a cluster of Salmonella Typhimurium DT120 in the North East of England was putatively associated with the consumption of pork. At the same time cases of illness in Denmark were associated with this Salmonella type, and a EU alert was issued to determine the type of S. Typhimurium DT120 identified. Isolates from the UK and Denmark were compared on the basis of antibiogram, Pulsed Field Gel Electrophoresis (PFGE) and Multi-Locus-Variable number andem repeat Analysis (MLVA or VNTR) to identify the S. Typhimurium DT120 type and results were compared electronically. Isolates from England had the resistance profile ApSSuT (ampicillin, streptomycin, sulfamethoxazole and tetracycline), VNTR profile (171-244-316-0-487) and with the distinct PFGE type (STYMXB.0083). Isolates from Denmark were resistant to Ap (ampicillin) only, had the VNTR type (171-270-324-0-490) and a PFGE type distinct from England (STYMXB.0010). It was therefore possible to confirm that the isolates from England and Denmark were not identical. These results have verified the significance of VNTR in outbreak investigations for S. Typhimurium and have demonstrated how new molecular strategies may be used to supplement existing methods such as PFGE to enable the accurate and rapid comparison of isolates from different countries
