Fabrication and electrical characteristics of high-performance ZnO nanorod field-effect transistors
We report on fabrication and electrical characteristics of high-mobility field-effect transistors (FETs) using ZnO nanorods. For FET fabrications, single-crystal ZnO nanorods were prepared using catalyst-free metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy. Although typical ZnO nanorod FETs exhibited good electrical characteristics, with a transconductance of similar to140 nS and a mobility of 75 cm(2)/V s, the device characteristics were significantly improved by coating a polyimide thin layer on the nanorod surface, exhibiting a large turn-ON/OFF ratio of 10(4)-10(5), a high transconductance of 1.9 muS, and high electron mobility above 1000 cm(2)/V s. The role of the polymer coating in the enhancement of the devices is also discussed. (C) 2004 American Institute of Physics.X11333sciescopu
Dry etching of ZnO films and plasma-induced damage to optical properties
To study the effects of plasma chemistries on etch characteristics. and plasma-induced damage to the optical properties, dry etching of ZnO films has been carried out using inductively coupled plasmas of Cl-2 /Ar, Cl-2 /H-2 /Ar, and CH4 /H-2 /Ar. The CH4 /H-2 /Ar chemistry showed a faster etch rate and a better surface morphology than the Cl-2-based chemistries. Etched samples in all chemistries showed a substantial decrease in the PL intensity of band-edge luminescence mainly due to the plasma-induced damage. The CH4 /H-2 /Ar chemistry showed the least degradation of the optical properties. (C) 2003 American Vacuum Society. [DOI: 10.1116/1.1563252].open1139sciescopu
Local structure around Ga in ultrafine GaN/ZnO coaxial nanorod heterostructures
The structure of tubular GaN coaxially grown on ZnO nanorods with thickness of 6-12 nm was investigated using x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) at the Ga K edge. The XAFS measurements revealed that the GaN had a distorted-wurtzite structure, and that there were more distortions in the bond length of Ga-Ga pairs than in Ga-N pairs. However, no extra disorders were observed in any of the pairs. These results strongly suggest that Ga atoms first bonded to the ZnO template. Unlike other techniques, the XAFS determines structure around a selected species atom in nano-heterostructures. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.open1188sciescopu
Orientation-dependent x-ray absorption fine structure of ZnO nanorods
The local structure of two samples of vertically well-aligned ZnO nanorods with average diameters of 13 and 37 nm were studied using orientation-dependent x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) at the Zn K edge. The aligned ZnO nanorod samples were fabricated on sapphire (0001) substrates with a catalyst-free metalorganic vapor-phase epitaxy method. The XAFS measurements showed that both nanorod samples have a well-ordered wurtzite structure and that no vacancy was observed at either site of zinc or oxygen atoms. However, we found that in both samples the lattice constants of a and b were shrunken by similar to0.04 Angstrom while c was elongated by similar to0.1 Angstrom, compared with those of their bulk counterparts. Furthermore, there was a substantial amount of disorder in the bond length of the only Zn-O pairs located near the ab plane. This may suggest that the terminating atoms at the boundaries of the nanorods are oxygen atoms. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.open114545sciescopu
CP Violation in \tau ->\nu\pi K_S and D->\pi K_S: The Importance of K_S-K_L Interference
The -factories have measured CP asymmetries in the and
modes. The state is identified by its decay to two pions at
a time that is close to the lifetime. Within the Standard Model and many
of its extensions, the asymmetries in these modes come from CP violation in
mixing. We emphasize that the interference between the
amplitudes of intermediate and is as important as the pure
amplitude. Consequently, the measured asymmetries depend on the times over
which the relevant decay rates are integrated and on features of the
experiment.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Iron content in forage sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) measured on different slit widths with atomic absorption spectrometry
Our objective was to know the right slit width for iron (Fe) concentration of forage sorghum, sorghum hybrid (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench), and also to discern which water treatment sludge (WTS) were good for ruminant's health with the feeding sorghum on the present study. The present experiment was carried out on a randomized block design with four treatments; Control, alum sludge compost, alum sludge + NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium fertilizers), alum sludge compost + NPK (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium fertilizers). Sorghum hybrid was harvested, and iron content of it was analyzed with an atomic absorption spectrophotometer on background correction (BGC) mode. In order to analyze the iron (Fe) content of the sorghum with the spectrophotometer, three different slit widths conditions were used; 0.15, 0.20 and 0.25 nm. Absorbance and background values were obtained during the Fe analyses with the apparatus. When the background value is small, it is preferred for some trace metals’ analyses. Both (AM/BS) ratio (mean of the absorbance values<AM> to the standard deviation of back ground values<BS>) and (AS<standard deviation of the absorbance values>/BS) ratio, were larger on 0.25 nm slit than those on 0.15 and 0.20 nm slit, and, from our experiment, the condition seemed better on the 0.25 nm slit for the iron analysis with the spectrophotometer. Therefore, the sorghum hybrid grown on (Alum+NPK) and on (Compost only) might be dangerous for ruminants because of their higher values than 200 mg Fe/kg DM (dry matter).Key words: Absorbance, alum sludge, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, background, forage sorghum hybrid, iron, slit
Longitudinal grey and white matter changes in frontotemporal dementia and Alzheimer's disease
Behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia are characterised by progressive brain atrophy. Longitudinal MRI volumetry may help to characterise ongoing structural degeneration and support the differential diagnosis of dementia subtypes. Automated, observer-independent atlas-based MRI volumetry was applied to analyse 102 MRI data sets from 15 bvFTD, 14 AD, and 10 healthy elderly control participants with consecutive scans over at least 12 months. Anatomically defined targets were chosen a priori as brain structures of interest. Groups were compared regarding volumes at clinic presentation and annual change rates. Baseline volumes, especially of grey matter compartments, were significantly reduced in bvFTD and AD patients. Grey matter volumes of the caudate and the gyrus rectus were significantly smaller in bvFTD than AD. The bvFTD group could be separated from AD on the basis of caudate volume with high accuracy (79% cases correct). Annual volume decline was markedly larger in bvFTD and AD than controls, predominantly in white matter of temporal structures. Decline in grey matter volume of the lateral orbitofrontal gyrus separated bvFTD from AD and controls. Automated longitudinal MRI volumetry discriminates bvFTD from AD. In particular, greater reduction of orbitofrontal grey matter and temporal white matter structures after 12 months is indicative of bvFTD
Design and Implementation of a Voltage Tracking with Artificial Neural Network Controller for a Double-input Buck-Boost Converter
This paper proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) control voltage tracking scheme of a double-input buckboost DC-DC converter. In this topology, a back-propagation algorithm topology is implemented. The controller is developed to improve the performance of the double-input converter during transient and steady-state operations. The neural network controller design, which is developed against output voltage command tracking is proposed. The proposed concept has been investigated and validated experimentally on a laboratory prototype using DSP TMS320F28335real time digital controller to verify the dynamic response of the proposed controller. The experimental results confirm the validity of the proposed neural network control technique, which is a promising an efficient control topology that ensures doubleinput converter suitable for electric vehicle and renewable energy applications
The Effects of Cocaine on Different Redox Forms of Cysteine and Homocysteine, and on Labile, Reduced Sulfur in the Rat Plasma Following Active versus Passive Drug Injections
Received: 28 November 2012 / Revised: 19 April 2013 / Accepted: 6 May 2013 / Published online: 16 May 2013
The Author(s) 2013. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.comThe aim of the present studies was to evaluate
cocaine-induced changes in the concentrations of different
redox forms of cysteine (Cys) and homocysteine (Hcy),
and products of anaerobic Cys metabolism, i.e., labile,
reduced sulfur (LS) in the rat plasma. The above-mentioned
parameters were determined after i.p. acute and
subchronic cocaine treatment as well as following i.v.
cocaine self-administration using the yoked procedure.
Additionally, Cys, Hcy, and LS levels were measured
during the 10-day extinction training in rats that underwent
i.v. cocaine administration. Acute i.p. cocaine treatment
increased the total and protein-bound Hcy contents,
decreased LS, and did not change the concentrations of Cys
fractions in the rat plasma. In turn, subchronic i.p. cocaine administration significantly increased free Hcy and lowered
the total and protein-bound Cys concentrations while
LS level was unchanged. Cocaine self-administration
enhanced the total and protein-bound Hcy levels, decreased
LS content, and did not affect the Cys fractions. On the
other hand, yoked cocaine infusions did not alter the concentration
of Hcy fractions while decreased the total and
protein-bound Cys and LS content. This extinction training
resulted in the lack of changes in the examined parameters
in rats with a history of cocaine self-administration while in
the yoked cocaine group an increase in the plasma free Cys
fraction and LS was seen. Our results demonstrate for the
first time that cocaine does evoke significant changes in
homeostasis of thiol amino acids Cys and Hcy, and in some
products of anaerobic Cys metabolism, which are dependent
on the way of cocaine administration
Cerebellar Integrity in the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis - Frontotemporal Dementia Continuum
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) are multisystem neurodegenerative disorders that manifest overlapping cognitive, neuropsychiatric and motor features. The cerebellum has long been known to be crucial for intact motor function although emerging evidence over the past decade has attributed cognitive and neuropsychiatric processes to this structure. The current study set out i) to establish the integrity of cerebellar subregions in the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis-behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia spectrum (ALS-bvFTD) and ii) determine whether specific cerebellar atrophy regions are associated with cognitive, neuropsychiatric and motor symptoms in the patients. Seventy-eight patients diagnosed with ALS, ALS-bvFTD, behavioural variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD), most without C9ORF72 gene abnormalities, and healthy controls were investigated. Participants underwent cognitive, neuropsychiatric and functional evaluation as well as structural imaging using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) to examine the grey matter subregions of the cerebellar lobules, vermis and crus. VBM analyses revealed: i) significant grey matter atrophy in the cerebellum across the whole ALS-bvFTD continuum; ii) atrophy predominantly of the superior cerebellum and crus in bvFTD patients, atrophy of the inferior cerebellum and vermis in ALS patients, while ALS-bvFTD patients had both patterns of atrophy. Post-hoc covariance analyses revealed that cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms were particularly associated with atrophy of the crus and superior lobule, while motor symptoms were more associated with atrophy of the inferior lobules. Taken together, these findings indicate an important role of the cerebellum in the ALS-bvFTD disease spectrum, with all three clinical phenotypes demonstrating specific patterns of subregional atrophy that associated with different symptomology
