Public Libraries as Anchor Institutions in Smart Communities: Current Practices and Future Development

    Get PDF
Local governments around the world are exploring different strategies to become smarter: more efficient, sustainable, and highly interconnected. However, many actors outside government need to be involved too. For instance, public libraries have the potential to play a very important role in the development of smart and connected communities, due to their strong legitimacy in the eyes of citizens and the types of services and programs they are already providing, which in many cases go well beyond what could be considered traditional library services. This paper analyzes innovative practices in public libraries and argue that they already show the potential of public libraries to become catalysts for smart and connected communities. Together, these innovations represent an opportunity for governments and communities to engage and a new way to think about public libraries as very important actors in smart community initiatives

Hydrogen production by laser irradiation of metals in water under an ultrasonic field: A novel approach

An alternative method for hydrogen production by laser irradiation of metals in water is proposed. Metals such as Ti, Al, Mg an Al–Mg alloy and Si, were laser ablated and subjected to an ultrasonic field simultaneously to promote a displacement chemical reaction of hydrogen from water. The produced gas was characterized by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Molecular hydrogen was found suggesting that this procedure allows the production of H 2 of high purity. All the studied metals under laser irradiation produced H 2 and the volume rise as the laser fluence was increased following a no-linear monotonic behavior with a similar tendency. Without ultrasound the amount of hydrogen was significantly reduced. An important advantage of the proposed H 2 production method is the low amount of mass consumed which lead to maximum hydrogen production rates close to 1300 ml/min per gr of aluminumThis work was partially supported by the CONACYT (Mexico) Projects CB-240998 and SENER-CONACYT 226151. A Non-Natural Nucleotide Uses a Specific Pocket to Selectively Inhibit Telomerase Activity

Telomerase, a unique reverse transcriptase that specifically extends the ends of linear chromosomes, is up-regulated in the vast majority of cancer cells. Here, we show that an indole nucleotide analog, 5-methylcarboxyl-indolyl-2′-deoxyriboside 5′-triphosphate (5-MeCITP), functions as an inhibitor of telomerase activity. The crystal structure of 5-MeCITP bound to the Tribolium castaneum telomerase reverse transcriptase reveals an atypical interaction, in which the nucleobase is flipped in the active site. In this orientation, the methoxy group of 5-MeCITP extends out of the canonical active site to interact with a telomerase-specific hydrophobic pocket formed by motifs 1 and 2 in the fingers domain and T-motif in the RNA-binding domain of the telomerase reverse transcriptase. In vitro data show that 5-MeCITP inhibits telomerase with a similar potency as the clinically administered nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor azidothymidine (AZT). In addition, cell-based studies show that treatment with the cell-permeable nucleoside counterpart of 5-MeCITP leads to telomere shortening in telomerase-positive cancer cells, while resulting in significantly lower cytotoxic effects in telomerase-negative cell lines when compared with AZT treatment

Objective:To analyze the psychological impact of the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic on nursesin Spain in three different dimensions: exposure to stressors, perceived emotions, andstress coping. Background: On March 11, 2019, the World Health Organization recognized a globalpandemic caused by a SARS-Cov-2 virus, COVID-19, which rapidly spread across theplanet, involving a community health emergency of international scope.Introduction:The pandemic situation in health centers has led to significant changesin the work environment, compromising care professionals’ physical and psychologicalhealth and resulting in strong physical and mental exhaustion. Methods: An observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out, betweenFebruary and April 2021, in a large sample of 1360 participants. The researchers con-ducted the dissemination of a validated questionnaire to working nurses in Spain. Results:The sex variable in relation to the study dimensions (stressors, perceived emo-tions, and coping strategies) showed a mean for stressors of 62.2±10.5 in women and59.8±12.5 in men (p=0.010), showing statistically significant differences. Age was aprotective factor for all dimensions (p<0.001). Time of experience showed statisticallysignificant differences for stressors and coping strategies in professionals with more than15 years of experience. Discussion: Female nurses who are younger, have less work experience, have not builta family of their own, and live in smaller or indoor flats may be more vulnerable to theeffects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their mental health. Other national and inter-national studies, in this line, have shown an important psychological impact on theseprofessionals. Conclusion:It is necessary to design and adopt effective strategies and measures for theprotection of nurses’ mental health, as well as for the prevention and early diagnosis ofpossible mental health problems
