    Multiple problems in siblings with Gardner’s syndrome

    The problems encountered in the diagnosis of two siblings suffering from a high penetration variant of Gardner’s syndrome are presented. The importance of recognizing the extra colonic manifestations of the syndrome at an early stage and technical difficulties encountered during colonoscopy are noted. Operative procedures available to treat multiple colonic polyps in Gardner’s syndrome are discussed in relation to technical problems which may be encountered in the individual case. Hopefully this presentation will highlight the importance of the setting up of a Familial Polyposis Coli register in Malta in order to facilitate early diagnoses and treatment of the condition.peer-reviewe

    From Needs to Actions to Secure Apps?:The Effect of Requirements and Developer Practices on App Security

    Increasingly mobile device users are being hurt by security or privacy issues with the apps they use. App developers can help prevent this; inexpensive security assurance techniques to do so are now well established, but do developers use them? And if they do so, is that reflected in more secure apps? From a survey of 335 successful app developers, we conclude that less than a quarter of such professionals have access to security experts; that less than a third use assurance techniques regularly; and that few have made more than cosmetic changes as a result of the European GDPR legislation. Reassuringly, we found that app developers tend to use more assurance techniques and make more frequent security updates when (1) they see more need for security, and (2) there is security expert or champion involvement

    Spitzer Observations of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko at 5.5-4.3 AU From the Sun

    We report Spitzer Space Telescope observations of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko at 5.5 and 4.3 AU from the Sun, post-aphelion. Comet 67P is the primary target of the European Space Agency's Rosetta mission. The Rosetta spacecraft will rendezvous with the nucleus at heliocentric distances similar to our observations. Rotationally resolved observations at 8 and 24 microns (at a heliocentric distance, rh, of 4.8 AU) that sample the size and color-temperature of the nucleus are combined with aphelion R-band light curves observed at the Very Large Telescope (VLT) and yield a mean effective radius of 2.04 +/- 0.11 km, and an R-band geometric albedo of 0.054 +/- 0.006. The amplitudes of the R-band and mid-infrared light curves agree, which suggests that the variability is dominated by the shape of the nucleus. We also detect the dust trail of the comet at 4.8 and 5.5 AU, constrain the grain sizes to be less than or similar to 6 mm, and estimate the impact hazard to Rosetta. We find no evidence for recently ejected dust in our images. If the activity of 67P is consistent from orbit to orbit, then we may expect the Rosetta spacecraft will return images of an inactive or weakly active nucleus as it rendezvous with the comet at rh = 4 AU in 2014.Comment: 19 pages, 2 tables, 10 figures.     Performance of an R-410A Room Air Conditioner Modified for Use with R-1234ze

    This paper presents the results of a senior design project that challenged a team of undergraduate students to reduce the environmental impact of a room air conditioner (RAC) by reducing its energy consumption and/or use of high-GWP refrigerants. Over the course of an academic year, the team was able to investigate, design, model, evaluate, and build a prototype improved RAC. The team began by reviewing literature on approaches that have been proposed to meet or exceed existing energy efficiency and refrigerant selection regulations. Based on these findings and the specified needs of the project sponsor, the team evaluated the appropriateness of different concepts for improving the existing R-410A RAC design and decided to pursue modifications to adapt the unit for R-1234yf. The first step in the redesign process was to develop a thermodynamic model of the existing system. Because very little information was known about the performance of the individual components in the existing RAC, some rough performance estimates were obtained through measurements. The model of the existing system was then modified to provide the same cooling capacity as the original unit but using R-1234yf, and a replacement compressor was selected based on the model results. After the replacement compressor and resized capillary tubes were installed in the RAC, the team was asked to test the prototype unit using R-1234ze instead of R-1234yf. Therefore, the model was modified to predict the cooling capacity of the unit using R-1234ze as the working fluid. The unit was tested using an environmental chamber to simulate the outdoor air conditions and a large room as the indoor environment. Although this setup could not ensure steady-state operation, air temperature measurements indicated that the room temperature did not vary more than 1.5°F over 12 minutes of RAC operation. The cooling capacity calculated based on experimental measurements agreed within 3% of the model predictions. While the team was able to modify the RAC to operate with R-1234ze and was able to predict the unit’s performance with reasonable accuracy, the modifications required a significantly larger compressor and capillary tubes. Therefore, the project clearly illustrated that fitting within the space and weight constraints of window units presents a significant challenge to implementing R-1234ze in RACs

    Two Severe Cases of Tungiasis in Goat Kids in Uganda

    Tungiasis ensues from the penetration and burrowing of female sand fleas (Tunga spp.; Siphonaptera: Tungidae) in the skin of mammals. There are few case reports of severe tungiasis in goats and in these cases the Tunga species were not in most cases clearly identified. Two cases of severe tungiasis caused by Tunga penetrans in goat kids from tungiasis-endemic rural Uganda are reported. These are the first severe cases of tungiasis in goats reported from outside South America

    Collagen-induced arthritis is exacerbated in IL-10-deficient mice

    IL-10 is a potent immunoregulatory cytokine attenuating a wide range of immune effector and inflammatory responses. In the present study, we assess whether endogenous levels of IL-10 function to regulate the incidence and severity of collagen-induced arthritis. DBA/1 wildtype (WT), heterozygous (IL-10(+/-)) and homozygous (IL-10(-/-)) IL-10-deficient mice were immunized with type II collagen. Development of arthritis was monitored over time, and collagen-specific cytokine production and anticollagen antibodies were assessed. Arthritis developed progressively in mice immunized with collagen, and 100% of the WT, IL-10(+/-), and IL-10(-/-) mice were arthritic at 35 days. However, the severity of arthritis in the IL-10(-/-) mice was significantly greater than that in WT or IL-1(+/-) animals. Disease severity was associated with reduced IFN-Îł levels and a dramatic increase in CD11b-positive macrophages. Paradoxically, both the IgG(1) and IgG(2a) anticollagen antibody responses were also significantly reduced. These data demonstrate that IL-10 is capable of controlling disease severity through a mechanism that involves IFN-Îł. Since IL-10 levels are elevated in rheumatoid arthritis synovial fluid, these findings may have relevance to rheumatoid arthritis
