Competition of crystal field splitting and Hund's rule coupling in two-orbital magnetic metal-insulator transitions
Competition of crystal field splitting and Hund's rule coupling in magnetic
metal-insulator transitions of half-filled two-orbital Hubbard model is
investigated by multi-orbital slave-boson mean field theory. We show that with
the increase of Coulomb correlation, the system firstly transits from a
paramagnetic (PM) metal to a {\it N\'{e}el} antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott
insulator, or a nonmagnetic orbital insulator, depending on the competition of
crystal field splitting and the Hund's rule coupling. The different AFM Mott
insulator, PM metal and orbital insulating phase are none, partially and fully
orbital polarized, respectively. For a small and a finite crystal
field, the orbital insulator is robust. Although the system is nonmagnetic, the
phase boundary of the orbital insulator transition obviously shifts to the
small regime after the magnetic correlations is taken into account. These
results demonstrate that large crystal field splitting favors the formation of
the orbital insulating phase, while large Hund's rule coupling tends to destroy
it, driving the low-spin to high-spin transition.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Fertility and gonadal function in female survivors after treatment of early unfavorable Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) within the German Hodgkin Study Group HD14 trial
Background In the HD14 trial, 2× BEACOPPescalated+2× ABVD (2+2) has improved the primary outcome. Compared with 4× ABVD, this benefit might be compromised by more infertility in women. Therefore, we analyzed gonadal function and fertility. Patients and methods Women ≤45 years in ongoing remission at least 1 year after therapy were included. Hormone parameters, menopausal symptoms, measures to preserve fertility, menstrual cycle, pregnancies, and offspring were evaluated. Results Three hundred and thirty one of 579 women addressed participated (57.2%) and 263 per-protocol treated patients qualified (A=ABVD: 137, B=2+2: 126, mean time after therapy 42 and 43 months, respectively). Regular menstrual cycle after treatment (A: 87%, B: 83%) and time to recovery (≤12 months) were not different. Follicle-stimulating hormone and anti-Muellerian hormone were significantly better in arm A. However, pregnancies after therapy favored arm B (A: 15%, B: 26%, P=0.043) and motherhood rates were equivalent to the German normal population. Multivariate analysis revealed prophylactic use of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues as highly significant prognostic factor for preservation of fertility (odds ratio=12.87, P=0.001). Severe menopausal symptoms were frequent in women ≥30 years (A: 21%, B: 25%). Conclusions Hormonal levels after 2+2 indicate a reduced ovarian reserve. SPFC: a tool to improve water management and hay production in the Crau region
Correspondance: [email protected] ; UMR SYSTEM Ă©quipe CONSYSTThis article deals with the development and application of SPFC, a model used to improve water and grassland production (HC) in this region of France. This model is composed of two sub-models: an irrigation model and a crop model. As the fields are border irrigated, these two sub-models are coupled. The crop model simulates dry matter, Leaf Area Index (LAI) and soil water reserve (SWR) variations. LAI and SWR are both used for border model updating: SWR for the deficit of saturation required by the infiltration equation and LAI for the roughness coefficient n. After calibration and validation, SPFC is then used to identify realistic management strategies for the irrigation and production system at the plot level. By scheduling irrigation when SWR is 50% depleted, would result in a low Dry Matter DM production loss (around 10%), reduced labour (8 irrigation events instead of 11) and in significant water saving compared with farmers' practices, on the basis of an average climatic scenario. Furthermore, this improvement of irrigation efficiency is not incompatible with groundwater recharge used for the potable water supply of the region

Fires at Neumark-Nord 2, Germany: An analysis of fire proxies from a Last Interglacial Middle Palaeolithic basin site
Few sites with evidence for fire use are known from the Last Interglacial in Europe. Hearth features are rarely preserved, probably as a result of post-depositional processes. The small postglacial basins (<300 m in diameter) that dominate the sedimentary context of the Eemian record in Europe are high-resolution environmental archives often containing charcoal particles. This case study presents the macroscopic charcoal record of the Neumark-Nord 2 basin, Germany, and the correlation of this record with the distinct find levels of the basin margin that also contain thermally altered archaeological material. Increased charcoal quantities are shown to correspond to phases of hominin presence-a pattern that fits best with recurrent anthropogenic fires within the watershed. This research shows the potential of small basin localities in the reconstruction of local fire histories, where clear archaeological features like hearths are missing

Numerical and Symbolical Methods for the GCD of Several Polynomials
The computation of the Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) of a set of polynomials is an important issue in computational mathematics and it is linked to Control Theory very strong. In this paper we present different matrix-based methods, which are developed for the efficient computation of the GCD of several polynomials. Some of these methods are naturally developed for dealing with numerical inaccuracies in the input data and produce meaningful approximate results. Therefore, we describe and compare numerically and symbolically methods such as the ERES, the Matrix Pencil and other resultant type methods, with respect to their complexity and effectiveness. The combination of numerical and symbolic operations suggests a new approach in software mathematical computations denoted as hybrid computations. This combination offers great advantages, especially when we are interested in finding approximate solutions. Finally the notion of approximate GCD is discussed and a useful criterion estimating the strength of a given approximate GCD is also developed
