    Boost Invariance and Multiplicity Dependence of the Charge Balance Functionin π+p\pi^{+}p and K+pK^{+}p Collisions at s=22\sqrt s= 22 GeV/c

    Boost invariance and multiplicity dependence of the charge balance function are studied in \pi^{+}\rp and \rK^{+}\rp collisions at 250 GeV/cc incident beam momentum. Charge balance, as well as charge fluctuations, are found to be boost invariant over the whole rapidity region, but both depend on the size of the rapidity window. It is also found that the balance function becomes narrower with increasing multiplicity, consistent with the narrowing of the balance function when centrality and/or system size increase, as observed in current relativistic heavy ion experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures, Revte

    A study of the nuclear medium influence on transverse momentum of hadrons produced in deep inelastic neutrino scattering

    The influence of nuclear effects on the transverse momentum (pT)(p_T) distributions of neutrinoproduced hadrons is investigated using the data obtained with SKAT propane-freon bubble chamber irradiated in the neutrino beam (with EνE_{\nu} = 3-30 GeV) at Serpukhov accelerator. Dependences of onthekinematicalvariablesofinclusivedeepinelasticscatteringandoftheproducedhadronsaremeasured.Ithasbeenobserved,thatthenucleareffectscauseanenhancementof on the kinematical variables of inclusive deep-inelastic scattering and of the produced hadrons are measured. It has been observed, that the nuclear effects cause an enhancement of of hadrons (more pronounced for the positively charged ones) produced in the target fragmentation region at low invariant mass of the hadronic system (2 <W<< W < 4 GeV) or at low energies transferred to the current quark (2 <ν<9< \nu < 9 GeV). At higher WW or ν\nu, no influence of nuclear effects on is observed. Measurement results are compared with predictions of a simple model, incorporating secondary intranuclear interactions of hadrons (with a formation length extracted from the Lund fragmentation model), which qualitatively reproduces the main features of the data.Comment: 23 pages, 7 figure

    Charge Fluctuations in \pi^{+}\rp and \rK^{+}\rp Collisions at 250 GeV/cc

    We report on measurements of event-by-event charge fluctuations in \pi^{+}\rp and \rK^{+}\rp collisions at 250 GeV/cc. The dependence of these fluctuations on the size of the rapidity windows are presented for the first time in the full phase space domain. The corrections for the influence of global charge conservation and leading-particle stopping are tested by the data. The discrepancy due to incomplete correction given by STAR and PHENIX are estimated. The dependence of the fluctuations on the position of the rapidity bin and on the multiplicity at different rapidity windows are also presented.Comment: 4pages, 3figure

    Entropy Analysis in \pi^{+}\rp and \rK^{+}\rp Collisions at s=22\sqrt{s}=22 GeV

    The entropy properties are analyzed by Ma's coincidence method in \pi^{+}\rp and \rK^{+}\rp collisions of the NA22 experiment at 250 GeV/cc incident momentum. By using the R\'{e}nyi entropies, we test the scaling law and additivity properties in rapidity space. The behavior of the R\'{e}nyi entropies as a function of the average number of particles is investigated.     J/psi azimuthal anisotropy relative to the reaction plane in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon

    The J/ψ\psi azimuthal distribution relative to the reaction plane has been measured by the NA50 experiment in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon. Various physical mechanisms related to charmonium dissociation in the medium created in the heavy ion collision are expected to introduce an anisotropy in the azimuthal distribution of the observed J/ψ\psi mesons at SPS energies. Hence, the measurement of J/ψ\psi elliptic anisotropy, quantified by the Fourier coefficient v2_2 of the J/ψ\psi azimuthal distribution relative to the reaction plane, is an important tool to constrain theoretical models aimed at explaining the anomalous J/ψ\psi suppression observed in Pb-Pb collisions. We present the measured J/ψ\psi yields in different bins of azimuthal angle relative to the reaction plane, as well as the resulting values of the Fourier coefficient v2_{2} as a function of the collision centrality and of the J/ψ\psi transverse momentum. The reaction plane has been estimated from the azimuthal distribution of the neutral transverse energy detected in an electromagnetic calorimeter. The analysis has been performed on a data sample of about 100 000 events, distributed in five centrality or pT_{\rm T} sub-samples. The extracted v2_{2} values are significantly larger than zero for non-central collisions and are seen to increase with pT_{\rm T}.Comment: proceedings of HP08 conference corrected a typo in one equatio

    A new measurement of J/psi suppression in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon

    We present a new measurement of J/psi production in Pb-Pb collisions at 158 GeV/nucleon, from the data sample collected in year 2000 by the NA50 Collaboration, under improved experimental conditions with respect to previous years. With the target system placed in vacuum, the setup was better adapted to study, in particular, the most peripheral nuclear collisions with unprecedented accuracy. The analysis of this data sample shows that the (J/psi)/Drell-Yan cross-sections ratio measured in the most peripheral Pb-Pb interactions is in good agreement with the nuclear absorption pattern extrapolated from the studies of proton-nucleus collisions. Furthermore, this new measurement confirms our previous observation that the (J/psi)/Drell-Yan cross-sections ratio departs from the normal nuclear absorption pattern for semi-central Pb-Pb collisions and that this ratio persistently decreases up to the most central collisions.Comment: 19 pages, 10 figures.     The NA60 experiment is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS. It has measured the dimuon yield in Indium--Indium collisions with an In beam of 158 AGeV/c and in p-A collisions with a proton beam of 400 and 158 AGeV/c. The results allow to address three important physics topics, namely the study of the rho spectral function in nuclear collisions, the clarification of the origin of the dimuon excess measured by NA50 in the intermediate mass range, and the J/psi suppression pattern in a collision system different from Pb-Pb. An overview of these results will be given in this paper

    Bottomonium and Drell-Yan production in p-A collisions at 450 GeV

    The NA50 Collaboration has measured heavy-quarkonium production in p-A collisions at 450 GeV incident energy (sqrt(s) = 29.1 GeV). We report here results on the production of the Upsilon states and of high-mass Drell-Yan muon pairs (m > 6 GeV). The cross-section at midrapidity and the A-dependence of the measured yields are determined and compared with the results of other fixed-target experiments and with the available theoretical estimates.     Thermal Dimuon Emission in In-In at the CERN SPS

    The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS has studied low-mass dimuon production in 158A GeV In-In collisions. A significant excess of pairs is observed above the yield expected from neutral meson decays, consistent with a dominant contribution from ππρμμ\pi\pi\to\rho\to\mu\mu. This paper presents precision results on the mass and transverse momentum spectra of the excess pairs. The space-time averaged rho spectral function associated to the measured mass distribution shows a significant broadening, but essentially no mass shift. The slope parameter TeffT_{eff} extracted from the spectra rises with dimuon mass up to the ρ\rho, followed by a sudden decline above.     Multiplicity dependence of jet-like two-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions at sNN\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.02 TeV

    Two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger and associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The transverse-momentum range 0.7 <pT,assoc<pT,trig< < p_{\rm{T}, assoc} < p_{\rm{T}, trig} < 5.0 GeV/cc is examined, to include correlations induced by jets originating from low momen\-tum-transfer scatterings (minijets). The correlations expressed as associated yield per trigger particle are obtained in the pseudorapidity range η<0.9|\eta|<0.9. The near-side long-range pseudorapidity correlations observed in high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions are subtracted from both near-side short-range and away-side correlations in order to remove the non-jet-like components. The yields in the jet-like peaks are found to be invariant with event multiplicity with the exception of events with low multiplicity. This invariance is consistent with the particles being produced via the incoherent fragmentation of multiple parton--parton scatterings, while the yield related to the previously observed ridge structures is not jet-related. The number of uncorrelated sources of particle production is found to increase linearly with multiplicity, suggesting no saturation of the number of multi-parton interactions even in the highest multiplicity p-Pb collisions.
