TCP over High Speed Variable Capacity Links: A Simulation Study for Bandwidth Allocation
New optical network technologies provide opportunities for fast, controllable bandwidth management. These technologies can now explicitly provide resources to data paths, creating demand driven bandwidth reservation across networks where an applications bandwidth needs can be meet almost exactly. Dynamic synchronous Transfer Mode (DTM) is a gigabit network technology that provides channels with dynamically adjustable capacity. TCP is a reliable end-to-end transport protocol that adapts its rate to the available capacity. Both TCP and the DTM bandwidth can react to changes in the network load, creating a complex system with inter-dependent feedback mechanisms. The contribution of this work is an assessment of a bandwidth allocation scheme for TCP flows on variable capacity technologies. We have created a simulation environment using ns-2 and our results indicate that the allocation of bandwidth maximises TCP throughput for most flows, thus saving valuable capacity when compared to a scheme such as link over-provisioning. We highlight one situation where the allocation scheme might have some deficiencies against the static reservation of resources, and describe its causes. This type of situation warrants further investigation to understand how the algorithm can be modified to achieve performance similar to that of the fixed bandwidth case
Van der Waals Density Functional for General Geometries
A scheme within density functional theory is proposed that provides a
practical way to generalize to unrestricted geometries the method applied with
some success to layered geometries [H. Rydberg, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 91,
126402 (2003)]. It includes van der Waals forces in a seamless fashion. By
expansion to second order in a carefully chosen quantity contained in the long
range part of the correlation functional, the nonlocal correlations are
expressed in terms of a density-density interaction formula. It contains a
relatively simple parametrized kernel, with parameters determined by the local
density and its gradient. The proposed functional is applied to rare gas and
benzene dimers, where it is shown to give a realistic description.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Cognitive behavioral intervention in sport psychology: A case illustration of the exposure method with an elite athlete
One common method in Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) to treat anxiety problems is exposure, but there are few articles examining its applicability to sport. The aim of this article is to give a background of the use of exposure in sport and present a case of how exposure can be used with athletes. The athlete was a 17-year-old female cross-country skier with high levels of performance anxiety. In the case description, common procedures in CBT such as behavioral analysis, psychoeducation, and exposure are presented, as well as how anxiety can be managed. After the intervention the athlete perceived lower levels of anxiety as well as improved behavioral repertoire (e.g., less avoidant behaviors and more functional sport-specific behaviors). This case may be used to help practitioners consider the use of exposure in competitive sports. © 2016 Association for Applied Sport Psycholog
Nickel Mixing in the Outer Layers of SN 1987A
Supernova 1987A remains the most well-observed and well-studied supernova to
date. Observations produced excellent broad-band photometric and spectroscopic
coverage over a wide wavelength range at all epochs. Here, we focus on the very
early spectroscopic observations. Only recently have numerical models been of
sufficient detail to accurately explain the observed spectra. In SN 1987A, good
agreement has been found between observed and synthetic spectra for day one,
but by day four, the predicted Balmer lines become much weaker than the
observed lines. We present the results of work based on a
radiation-hydrodynamic model by Blinnikov and collaborators. Synthetic non-LTE
spectra generated from this model by the general radiation transfer code
PHOENIX strongly support the theory that significant mixing of nickel into the
outer envelope is required to maintain strong Balmer lines. Preliminary results
suggest a lower limit to the average nickel mass of 1.0 \times 10^{-5} solar
masses is required above 5000 \kmps by day four. PHOENIX models thus have the
potential to be a sensitive probe for nickel mixing in the outer layers of a

Genetic Assessment of Salmon and Sea Trout Stocking in a Baltic Sea River
Microsatellite DNA variation were used to assess the outcome of stocking salmon and trout in River Saevara, N Sweden. No information on pre-stocking genetic composition of salmon and trout in R Saevara was available. In two year classes of salmon smolt microsatellite data indicated that post-stocking genetic composition differed markedly (Fst = 0.048) from the main donor strain, Byskeaelven salmon, and from other Gulf of Bothnia salmon stocks (Fst 0.047- 0.132). The STRUCTURE program failed to detect any sub structuring within Saevara salmon. It was concluded that only minor introgression estimated to a proportion of 0.11 (95% CI 0.07 - 0.16) has occurred in salmon. Sea migrating trout showed overall low differentiation among populations with maximum Fst of 0.03 making analysis more cumbersome than in salmon. Still, the Saevara trout deviated significantly from potential donor populations and structure software supported that majority of trout in Saevara formed a distinct genetic population. Admixture was more extensive in trout and estimated to 0.17 (95% CI 0.10 - 0.25)
Observations of the Crab Nebula and its pulsar in the far-ultraviolet and in the optical
We present HST/STIS far-UV observations of the Crab nebula and its pulsar.
Broad, blueshifted absorption arising in the nebula is seen in C IV 1550,
reaching about 2500 km/s. This can be interpreted as evidence for a fast outer
shell, and we adopt a spherically symmetric model to constrain the properties
of this. We find that the density appears to decrease outward in the shell. A
lower limit to the mass is 0.3 solar masses with an accompanying kinetic energy
of 1.5EE{49} ergs. A massive 10^{51} erg shell cannot be excluded, but is less
likely if the density profile is much steeper than R^{-4} and the velocity is
<6000 km/s. The observations cover the region 1140-1720 A. With the time-tag
mode of the spectrograph we obtain the pulse profile. It is similar to that in
the near-UV, although the primary peak is marginally narrower. Together with
the near-UV data, and new optical data from NOT, our spectrum of the pulsar
covers the entire region from 1140-9250 A. Dereddening the spectrum gives a
flat spectrum for E(B-V)=0.52, R=3.1. This dereddened spectrum of the Crab
pulsar can be fitted by a power law with spectral index alpha_{\nu} = 0.11 +/-
0.04. The main uncertainty is the amount and characteristics of the interstel-
lar reddening, and we have investigated the dependence of \alpha_{\nu} on
E(B-V) and R. In the extended emission covered by our 25" x 0.5" slit in the
far-UV, we detect C IV 1550 and He II 1640 emission lines from the Crab nebula.
Several interstellar absorption lines are detected toward the pulsar. The Ly
alpha absorption indicates a column density of 3.0+/-0.5\EE{21} cm^{-2} of
neutral hydrogen, which agrees well with our estimate of E(B-V)=0.52 mag. Other

The evolution of ultraviolet emission lines from the circumstellar material surrounding SN 1987A
The presence of narrow high-temperature emission lines from nitrogen-rich gas
close to SN 1987A has been the principal observational constraint on the evolu-
tionary status of the supernova's progenitor. A new analysis of the complete
five-year set of low and high resolution IUE ultraviolet spectra of SN 1987A
(1987.2--1992.3) provide fluxes for the N V 1240, N IV] 1486, He II 1640, OIII]
1665, NIII] 1751, and CIII] 1908 lines with significantly reduced random and
systematic errors and reveals significant short-term fluctuations in the light
curves. The N V, N IV] and N III] lines turn on sequentially over 15 to 20 days
and show a progression from high to low ionization potential, implying an ioni-
zation gradient in the emitting region. The line emission turns on suddenly at
83+/-4 days after the explosion, as defined by N IV]. The N III] line reaches
peak luminosity at 399+/-15 days. A ring radius of (6.24+/-0.20)E{17} cm and
inclination of 41.0+/-3.9 is derived from these times, assuming a circular
ring. The probable role of resonant scattering in the N V light curve
introduces systematic errors that leads us to exclude this line from the timing
analysis. A new nebular analysis yields improved CNO abundance ratios
N/C=6.1+/-1.1 and N/O=1.7+/-0.5, confirming the nitrogen enrichment found in
our previous paper. From the late-time behavior of the light curves we find
that the emission origi- nates from progressively lower density gas. We
estimate the emitting mass near maximum (roughly 400 days) to be roughly
4.7E{-2} solar masses, assuming a filling factor of unity and an electron
density of 2.6E4 cm^{-3}. These results are discussed in the context of current

Recovering from stillbirth: the effects of making and sharing memories on maternal mental health
Objective: This study examined whether the experience of creating and sharing memories of their babies is associated with mothers’ mental health after stillbirth, taking account of factors previously shown to be important. Background: Mothers of stillborn babies are usually offered the opportunity to spend time with and create memories of their babies. However, evidence on whether this leads to better mental health outcomes is equivocal. One possible explanation is that the impact of making memories is mediated by the extent to which women subsequently share these memories. Methods: Cross-sectional questionnaire study. Mothers (N = 162) of stillborn babies completed online questionnaires of how memories were made and shared, satisfaction with memory-making and sharing, professional and social support, and symptoms of depression, anxiety and PTSD. Results: The majority of mothers made and shared memories. The number of different memory-making activities was not associated with mental health outcomes. However, the degree to which mothers shared their memories was associated with fewer PTSD symptoms. Regression analyses showed that good mental health was most strongly associated with time since stillbirth, perceived professional support, sharing of memories and less wish to talk more about the baby. Conclusion: This study confirms research showing that time since stillbirth and perceived professional support is associated with better mental health following stillbirth and for the first time shows the importance of opportunities to share memories of the baby. Variation in sharing opportunities may contribute to inconsistencies in the association between making memories and mental health following stillbirth
