Extraction of the Axial Nucleon Form Factor from Neutrino Experiments on Deuterium
We present new parameterizations of vector and axial nucleon form factors. We
maintain an excellent descriptions of the form factors at low momentum
transfers (), where the spatial structure of the nucleon is important, and
use the Nachtman scaling variable to relate elastic and inelastic form
factors and impose quark-hadron duality constraints at high where the
quark structure dominates. We use the new vector form factors to re-extract
updated values of the axial form factor from \numu experiments on deuterium.
We obtain an updated world average value from \numud, \numubarH and pion
electroproduction experiments of = . Our
parameterizations are useful in modeling interactions at low energies
(e.g. for \numu oscillations experiments). The predictions for high can

The CSIRO Mk3L climate system model version 1.0 – Part 1: Description and evaluation
The CSIRO Mk3L climate system model is a coupled general circulation model, designed primarily for millennial-scale climate simulations and palaeoclimate research. Mk3L includes components which describe the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice and land surface, and combines computational efficiency with a stable and realistic control climatology. This paper describes the model physics and software, analyses the control climatology, and evaluates the ability of the model to simulate the modern climate. <br><br> Mk3L incorporates a spectral atmospheric general circulation model, a <i>z</i>-coordinate ocean general circulation model, a dynamic-thermodynamic sea ice model and a land surface scheme with static vegetation. The source code is highly portable, and has no dependence upon proprietary software. The model distribution is freely available to the research community. A 1000-yr climate simulation can be completed in around one-and-a-half months on a typical desktop computer, with greater throughput being possible on high-performance computing facilities. <br><br> Mk3L produces realistic simulations of the larger-scale features of the modern climate, although with some biases on the regional scale. The model also produces reasonable representations of the leading modes of internal climate variability in both the tropics and extratropics. The control state of the model exhibits a high degree of stability, with only a weak cooling trend on millennial timescales. Ongoing development work aims to improve the model climatology and transform Mk3L into a comprehensive earth system model
Mitochondrial and nuclear genes suggest that stony corals are monophyletic but most families of stony corals are not (Order Scleractinia, Class Anthozoa, Phylum Cnidaria)
Modern hard corals (Class Hexacorallia; Order Scleractinia) are widely studied because of their fundamental role in reef
building and their superb fossil record extending back to the Triassic. Nevertheless, interpretations of their evolutionary
relationships have been in flux for over a decade. Recent analyses undermine the legitimacy of traditional suborders,
families and genera, and suggest that a non-skeletal sister clade (Order Corallimorpharia) might be imbedded within the
stony corals. However, these studies either sampled a relatively limited array of taxa or assembled trees from heterogeneous
data sets. Here we provide a more comprehensive analysis of Scleractinia (127 species, 75 genera, 17 families) and various
outgroups, based on two mitochondrial genes (cytochrome oxidase I, cytochrome b), with analyses of nuclear genes (ßtubulin,
ribosomal DNA) of a subset of taxa to test unexpected relationships. Eleven of 16 families were found to be
polyphyletic. Strikingly, over one third of all families as conventionally defined contain representatives from the highly
divergent "robust" and "complex" clades. However, the recent suggestion that corallimorpharians are true corals that have
lost their skeletons was not upheld. Relationships were supported not only by mitochondrial and nuclear genes, but also
often by morphological characters which had been ignored or never noted previously. The concordance of molecular
characters and more carefully examined morphological characters suggests a future of greater taxonomic stability, as well as
the potential to trace the evolutionary history of this ecologically important group using fossils
Aesthetics and literature : a problematic relation?
The paper argues that there is a proper place for literature within aesthetics but that care must be taken in identifying just what the relation is. In characterising aesthetic pleasure associated with literature it is all too easy to fall into reductive accounts, for example, of literature as merely "fine writing". Belleslettrist or formalistic accounts of literature are rejected, as are two other kinds of reduction, to pure meaning properties and to a kind of narrative realism. The idea is developed that literature-both poetry and prose fiction-invites its own distinctive kind of aesthetic appreciation which far from being at odds with critical practice, in fact chimes well with it
Role of bulk and surface phonons in the decay of metal surface states
We present a comprehensive theoretical investigation of the electron-phonon
contribution to the lifetime broadening of the surface states on Cu(111) and
Ag(111), in comparison with high-resolution photoemission results. The
calculations, including electron and phonon states of the bulk and the surface,
resolve the relative importance of the Rayleigh mode, being dominant for the
lifetime at small hole binding energies. Including the electron-electron
interaction, the theoretical results are in excellent agreement with the
measured binding energy and temperature dependent lifetime broadening.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Floating stones off El Hierro, Canary Islands: xenoliths of pre-island sedimentary origin in the early products of the October 2011 eruption
The eruption that started off the south coast of El Hierro, Canary Islands, in October 2011 has emitted intriguing eruption products found floating in the sea. These specimens appeared as floating volcanic "bombs" that have in the meantime been termed "restingolites" (after the close-by village of La Restinga) and exhibit cores of white and porous pumice-like material. Currently the nature and origin of these "floating stones" is vigorously debated among researchers, with important implications for the interpretation of the hazard potential of the ongoing eruption. The "restingolites" have been proposed to be either (i) juvenile high-silica magma (e.g. rhyolite), (ii) remelted magmatic material (trachyte), (iii) altered volcanic rock, or (iv) reheated hyaloclastites or zeolite from the submarine slopes of El Hierro. Here, we provide evidence that supports yet a different conclusion. We have collected and analysed the structure and composition of samples and compared the results to previous work on similar rocks found in the archipelago. Based on their high silica content, the lack of igneous trace element signatures, and the presence of remnant quartz crystals, jasper fragments and carbonate relicts, we conclude that "restingolites" are in fact xenoliths from pre-island sedimentary rocks that were picked up and heated by the ascending magma causing them to partially melt and vesiculate. They hence represent messengers from depth that help us to understand the interaction between ascending magma and crustal lithologies in the Canary Islands as well as in similar Atlantic islands that rest on sediment/covered ocean crust (e.g. Cape Verdes, Azores). The occurrence of these "restingolites" does therefore not indicate the presence of an explosive high-silica magma that is involved in the ongoing eruption
Symmetry-preserving discrete schemes for some heat transfer equations
Lie group analysis of differential equations is a generally recognized
method, which provides invariant solutions, integrability, conservation laws
etc. In this paper we present three characteristic examples of the construction
of invariant difference equations and meshes, where the original continuous
symmetries are preserved in discrete models. Conservation of symmetries in
difference modeling helps to retain qualitative properties of the differential

DNA barcoding reveals the coral “laboratory-rat”, Stylophora pistillata encompasses multiple identities
Stylophora pistillata is a widely used coral “lab-rat” species with highly variable morphology and a broad biogeographic range (Red Sea to western central Pacific). Here we show, by analysing Cytochorme Oxidase I sequences, from 241 samples across this range, that this taxon in fact comprises four deeply divergent clades corresponding to the Pacific-Western Australia, Chagos-Madagascar-South Africa, Gulf of Aden-Zanzibar-Madagascar, and Red Sea-Persian/Arabian Gulf-Kenya. On the basis of the fossil record of Stylophora, these four clades diverged from one another 51.5-29.6 Mya, i.e., long before the closure of the Tethyan connection between the tropical Indo-West Pacific and Atlantic in the early Miocene (16–24 Mya) and should be recognised as four distinct species. These findings have implications for comparative ecological and/or physiological studies carried out using Stylophora pistillata as a model species, and highlight the fact that phenotypic plasticity, thought to be common in scleractinian corals, can mask significant genetic variation
A Precise Measurement of the Weak Mixing Angle in Neutrino-Nucleon Scattering
We report a precise measurement of the weak mixing angle from the ratio of
neutral current to charged current inclusive cross-sections in deep-inelastic
neutrino-nucleon scattering. The data were gathered at the CCFR neutrino
detector in the Fermilab quadrupole-triplet neutrino beam, with neutrino
