This alignment gives rise to some of the most powerful social structures in modern democracies, the political parties. Due to the influence and importance of political parties in society, estimating their ideology is an active topic in political science research. However ideology is a very subjective phenomena and existing quantitative methods for ideology estimation are susceptible to a variety estimation issues, specially when applied in multi-partisan systems. In this work, we developed a data-driven network model for political ideology estimation based on partisan relationships established from party-switching politicians. The model is applied to the Brazilian case and yields results consistent with existing literature in the Brazilian political scenario while addressing data scarcity issues in existing methodologies.Science Without Borders program (CAPES, Brazil)National Science Foundation (NSF)Army Research Offic

PURPOSE: To assess the effect of regular physical exercise on plasma lipids and apoproteins in an elderly group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty-three old people of both sexes, aged between 65 and 94, were randomly distributed between a test group (n = 31) and a control group (n = 32). The test group followed a program of physical exercise for eight months, with intensity of 60% to 80% of heart rate reserve, consisting of three weekly sessions, on alternate days, of 60 minutes each. Before the beginning of the program and eight months afterwards, blood samples were collected to assess total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-C, HDL2-C. HDL3-C, apo A1, apo B-100 and apo (a). The ratios total cholesterol/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, HDL2-C/HDL3-C and apo A1/apo B-100 were also calculated. RESULTS: In the test group total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C, apo B-100, total cholesterol/HDL-C and LDL-C/HDL-C decreased significantly; HDL-C, HDL2-C, apo A1, HDL2-C/HDL3-C and apo A1/apo B-100 increased significantly; HDL3-C and apo (a) did not change. The control group did not present any significant alterations in any of the parameters assessed. CONCLUSIONS: Regular physical exercise decreases vascular risk and may help to reduce cardiovascular events in the elderly

Circulating micrornas correlate with multiple myeloma and skeletal osteolytic lesions

Multiple myeloma (MM) is the second most frequent hematological disease and can cause skeletal osteolytic lesions. This study aims to evaluate the expression of circulating microRNAs (miR-NAs) in MM patients and to correlate those levels with clinicopathological features, including bone lesions. A panel of miRNAs associated with MM onset and progression, or with bone remodeling, was analyzed in the plasma of 82 subjects (47 MM patients; 35 healthy controls). Results show that miR-16-5p, miR-20a-5p, and miR-21-5p are differently expressed between MM patients and healthy controls. Receiver operating characteristic analyses indicate that their combined expression has potential as a molecular marker (Area Under the Curve, AUC of 0.8249). Furthermore, significant correlations were found between the analyzed miRNAs and disease stage, treatment, ß2 microglobulin, serum albumin and creatinine levels, but not with calcium levels or genetic alterations. In this cohort, 65.96% of MM patients had bone lesions, the majority of which were in the vertebrae. Additionally, miR-29c-3p was decreased in patients with osteolytic lesions compared with patients without bone disease. Interestingly, circulating levels of miR-29b-3p correlated with cervical and thoracic vertebral lesions, while miR-195-5p correlated with thoracic lesions. Our findings suggest circulating miRNAs can be promising biomarkers for MM diagnosis and that their levels correlate with myeloma bone disease and osteolytic lesions. The project was supported by AO Spine-ESA Grant Award 2018 (AO Foundation); As-sociação Portuguesa Contra a Leucemia, Sociedade Portuguesa de Hematologia, AMGEN; and by Portuguese funds through FCT-Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT)/Ministério da Ciência, Tecnologia e Ensino Superior in the framework of the project POCI-01-0145-FEDER-031402-R2Bone (FEDER-Fundo Europeu de Desenvolvimento Regional funds through the COMPETE 2020-Operacional Programme for Competitiveness and Internationalisation—POCI, Portugal 2020)

Measurement of the degree of Polarization Entanglement Through Position Interference

We produce polarization entangled states with variable degree of entanglement for twin photons. Entanglement in polarization is coupled to entanglement in position that produces transverse coincidence interference fringes. We show both theoretically and experimentally that, due to this coupling, we can use the interference pattern to measure the polarization degree of entanglement.Comment: 5 figure

FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPCONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQAndrogens regulate prostate physiology, and exert their effects through the androgen receptor. We hypothesized that androgen deprivation needs additional transcription factors to orchestrate the changes taking place in the gland after castration and for the adaptation of the epithelial cells to the androgen-deprived environment, ultimately contributing to the origin of castration-resistant prostate cancer. This study was undertaken to identify transcription factors that regulate gene expression after androgen deprivation by castration (Cas). For the sake of comparison, we extended the analysis to the effects of administration of a high dose of 17 beta-estradiol (E2) and a combination of both (Cas+ E2). We approached this by (i) identifying gene expression profiles and enrichment terms, and by searching for transcription factors in the derived regulatory pathways; and (ii) by determining the density of putative transcription factor binding sites in the proximal promoter of the 10 most up- or down-regulated genes in each experimental group in comparison to the controls Gapdh and Tbp7. Filtering and validation confirmed the expression and localized EVI1 (Mecom), NFY, ELK1, GATA2, MYBL1, MYBL2, and NFkB family members (NFkB1, NFkB2, REL, RELA and RELB) in the epithelial and/or stromal cells. These transcription factors represent major regulators of epithelial cell survival and immaturity as well as an adaptation of the gland as an immune barrier in the absence of functional stimulation by androgens. Elk1 was expressed in smooth muscle cells and was up-regulated after day 4. Evi1 and Nfy genes are expressed in both epithelium and stroma, but were apparently not affected by androgen deprivation.96113FUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPCONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQFUNDAÇÃO DE AMPARO À PESQUISA DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO - FAPESPCONSELHO NACIONAL DE DESENVOLVIMENTO CIENTÍFICO E TECNOLÓGICO - CNPQ2009/16150-6Sem informaçã

Relationship between nitric oxide, enzymatic antioxidant system and ABA in maize under long-term drought.

ABSTRACT: The relationship between nitric oxide (NO) and up-regulation of the antioxidant system ABA-mediated in maize was evaluated under long-term drought. Two maize genotypes with contrasting drought tolerance (BRS1010 - sensitive and DKB390 - tolerant) were exposed to two soil water levels, field capacity (FC) and water deficit (WD) at pre-flowering. After 12 days under these conditions, plants were irrigated and soil water level kept at FC until harvest. The plants BRS1010 under water deficit (WD) showed lower catalase activity and reduced levels of NO, whereas ABA and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels increased compared to plants under FC. Although, DKB390 plants under WD did not present changes on the activity of enzymatic antioxidant system and ABA compared to plants at FC, and cellular damage remain unaltered; this fact was associated with the increase in NO levels. As a result, DKB390 plants under WD showed harvest index values 50% higher than BRS1010 under the same condition.

Deterioration modeling of steel moment resisting frames using finite-length plastic hinge force-based beam-column elements

The use of empirically calibrated moment-rotation models that account for strength and stiffness deterioration of steel frame members is paramount in evaluating the performance of steel structures prone to collapse under seismic loading. These deterioration models are typically used as zero-length springs in a concentrated plasticity formulation; however, a calibration procedure is required when they are used to represent the moment-curvature (M−χ) behavior in distributed plasticity formulations because the resulting moment-rotation (M−θ) response depends on the element integration method. A plastic hinge integration method for using deterioration models in force-based elements is developed and validated using flexural stiffness modifications parameters to recover the exact solution for linear problems while ensuring objective softening response. To guarantee accurate results in both the linear and nonlinear range of response, the flexural stiffness modification parameters are computed at the beginning of the analysis as a function of the user-specified plastic hinge length. With this approach, moment-rotation models that account for strength and stiffness deterioration can be applied in conjunction with force-based plastic hinge beam-column elements to support collapse prediction without increased modeling complexity
