Surface-electrode Rydberg-stark decelerator
Hydrogen atoms in Rydberg states with principal quantum numbers between 23 and 70 have been accelerated, decelerated, and electrostatically trapped using a surface-electrode Rydberg-Stark decelerator. By applying a set of oscillating electrical potentials to a two-dimensional array of electrodes on a printed circuit board (PCB), a continuously moving, three-dimensional electric trap with a predefined velocity and acceleration is generated. From an initial longitudinal velocity of 760m/s, final velocities of the Rydberg atoms ranging from 1200m/s to zero velocity in the laboratory-fixed frame of reference were achieved. Accelerated or decelerated atoms were detected directly by pulsed electric-field ionization. Atoms trapped at zero mean velocity above the PCB were reaccelerated off the PCB before field ionization. © 2012 American Physical Society
Measurement of the Permanent Electric Dipole Moment of the Xe Atom
We report on a new measurement of the CP-violating permanent Electric Dipole
Moment (EDM) of the neutral Xe atom. Our experimental approach is based
on the detection of the free precession of co-located nuclear spin-polarized
He and Xe samples. The EDM measurement sensitivity benefits
strongly from long spin coherence times of several hours achieved in diluted
gases and homogeneous weak magnetic fields of about 400~nT. A finite EDM is
indicated by a change in the precession frequency, as an electric field is
periodically reversed with respect to the magnetic guiding field. Our result,
ecm, is consistent with zero and is
used to place a new upper limit on the Xe EDM: ecm (95% C.L.). We also discuss the implications of this result for
various CP-violating observables as they relate to theories of physics beyond
the standard model

Is the Sevier Desert Reflection of West-Central Utah a Normal Fault?: Comment and Reply
Forum discussion on an article originally by Anders et al. Allmendinger and Royse critique Anders et al.'s argument, to which Anders et al. responds.
Critique abstract: The continuing discussion of the Sevier Desert region, almost 20 years after MacDonald’s (1976) classic paper, provides a measure of the significance of the region as well as the non-uniqueness of seismic reflection data interpretation. The article by Anders and Christie-Blick (1994) and the nearly simultaneous publication of similar ideas by Hamilton (1994) raise important questions. The interpretation of a Sevier Desert detachment has always been a hypothesis to be tested rather than a fact. In our opinion, however, Anders and Christie-Blick and Hamilton have ignored a variety of basic geologic data requiring the presence of a major low-angle normal fault on the east side of the Sevier Desert basin.
Response abstract: We concur with Allmendinger and Royse’s assessment of the detachment interpretation for the Sevier Desert reflection as a ‘‘hypothesis to be tested.’’ We reported on an attempt to do just that: to look for evidence for fault-related deformation in samples from two boreholes that intersect this feature. The absence of evidence for cataclasis in the inferred hanging-wall block or ductile deformation in the footwall naturally raises some interesting issues for the tectonic interpretation of the Sevier Desert. In drawing attention to these issues, we have not ‘‘ignored’’ any basic geologic data, nor are we aware of any data that ‘‘require’’ the presence of a major low-angle normal fault
Precise Measurement of Magnetic Field Gradients from Free Spin Precession Signals of He and Xe Magnetometers
We report on precise measurements of magnetic field gradients extracted from
transverse relaxation rates of precessing spin samples. The experimental
approach is based on the free precession of gaseous, nuclear spin polarized
He and Xe atoms in a spherical cell inside a magnetic guiding field
of about 400 nT using LT SQUIDs as low-noise magnetic flux detectors. The
transverse relaxation rates of both spin species are simultaneously monitored
as magnetic field gradients are varied. For transverse relaxation times
reaching 100 h, the residual longitudinal field gradient across the spin sample
could be deduced to be pT/cm. The method takes
advantage of the high signal-to-noise ratio with which the decaying spin
precession signal can be monitored that finally leads to the exceptional
accuracy to determine magnetic field gradients at the sub pT/cm scale
Orogen-parallel deformation of the Himalayan mid-crust: Insights from structural and magnetic fabric analyses of the Greater Himalayan Sequence, Annapurna-Dhaulagiri Himalaya, central Nepal
The metamorphic core of the Himalaya (Greater Himalayan Sequence, GHS), in the Annapurna-Dhaulagiri region, central Nepal, recorded orogen-parallel stretching during midcrustal evolution. Anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility and field-based structural analyses suggest that midcrustal deformation of the amphibolite facies core of the GHS occurred under an oblate/suboblate strain regime with associated formation of low-angle northward dipping foliation. Magnetic and mineral stretching lineations lying within this foliation from the top of the GHS record right-lateral orogen-parallel stretching. We propose that oblate strain within a midcrustal flow accommodated oblique convergence between India and the arcuate orogenic front without the need for strain partitioning in the upper crust. Oblate flattening may have also promoted orogen-parallel melt migration and development of melt-depleted regions between km3 scale leucogranite culminations at ~50–100 km intervals along orogen strike. Following the cessation of flow, continued oblique convergence led to upper crustal strain partitioning between orogen-perpendicular convergence on thrust faults and orogen-parallel extension on normal and strike-slip faults. In the Annapurna-Dhaulagiri Himalaya, orogen-parallel stretching lineations are interpreted as a record of transition from midcrustal orogen-perpendicular extrusion to upper crustal orogen-parallel stretching. Our findings suggest that midcrustal flow and upper crustal extension could not be maintained simultaneously and support other studies from across the Himalaya, which propose an orogen-wide transition from midcrustal orogen-perpendicular extrusion to upper crustal orogen-parallel extension during the mid-Miocene. The 3-D nature of oblate strain and orogen-parallel stretching cannot be replicated by 2-D numerical simulations of the Himalayan orogen
The political identities of neighbourhood planning in England
The rise of neighbourhood planning has been characterised as another step in a remorseless de-politicisation of the public sphere. A policy initiated by the Coalition Government in England to create the conditions for local communities to support housing growth, neighbourhood planning appears to evidence a continuing retreat from political debate and contestation. Clear boundaries are established for the holistic integration of participatory democracy into the strategic plan-making of the local authority. These boundaries seek to take politics out of development decisions and exclude all issues of contention from discussion. They achieve this goal at the cost of arming participatory democracy with a collective identity around which new antagonisms may develop. Drawing on the post-political theories of Chantal Mouffe this paper identifies the return of antagonism and conflict to participation in spatial planning. Key to its argument is the concept of the boundary or frontier that in Mouffe’s theoretical framework institutionalises conflict between political entities. Drawing on primary research with neighbourhood development plans in England the paper explores how boundary conditions and boundary designations generate antagonism and necessitate political action. The paper charts the development of the collective identities that result from these boundary lines and argues for the potential for neighbourhood planning to restore political conflict to the politics of housing development
Data-Driven Understanding of Smart Service Systems Through Text Mining
Smart service systems are everywhere, in homes and in the transportation, energy, and healthcare sectors. However, such systems have yet to be fully understood in the literature. Given the widespread applications of and research on smart service systems, we used text mining to develop a unified understanding of such systems in a data-driven way. Specifically, we used a combination of metrics and machine learning algorithms to preprocess and analyze text data related to smart service systems, including text from the scientific literature and news articles. By analyzing 5,378 scientific articles and 1,234 news articles, we identify important keywords, 16 research topics, 4 technology factors, and 13 application areas. We define ???smart service system??? based on the analytics results. Furthermore, we discuss the theoretical and methodological implications of our work, such as the 5Cs (connection, collection, computation, and communications for co-creation) of smart service systems and the text mining approach to understand service research topics. We believe this work, which aims to establish common ground for understanding these systems across multiple disciplinary perspectives, will encourage further research and development of modern service systems
Study of e+e- --> pi+ pi- pi0 process using initial state radiation with BABAR
The process e+e- --> pi+ pi- pi0 gamma has been studied at a center-of-mass
energy near the Y(4S) resonance using a 89.3 fb-1 data sample collected with
the BaBar detector at the PEP-II collider. From the measured 3pi mass spectrum
we have obtained the products of branching fractions for the omega and phi
mesons, B(omega --> e+e-)B(omega --> 3pi)=(6.70 +/- 0.06 +/- 0.27)10-5 and
B(phi --> e+e-)B(phi --> 3pi)=(4.30 +/- 0.08 +/- 0.21)10-5, and evaluated the
e+e- --> pi+ pi- pi0 cross section for the e+e- center-of-mass energy range
1.05 to 3.00 GeV. About 900 e+e- --> J/psi gamma --> pi+ pi- pi0 gamma events
have been selected and the branching fraction B(J/psi --> pi+ pi- pi0)=(2.18
+/- 0.19)% has been measured.Comment: 21 pages, 37 postscript figues, submitted to Phys. Rev.
