    Separated flow

    Get PDF
A brief overview of flow separation phenomena is provided. Langley has many active research programs in flow separation related areas. Three cases are presented which describe specific examples of flow separation research. In each example, a description of the fundamental fluid physics and the complexity of the flow field is presented along with a method of either reducing or controlling the extent of separation. The following examples are discussed: flow over a smooth surface with an adverse pressure gradient; flow over a surface with a geometric discontinuity; and flow with shock-boundary layer interactions. These results will show that improvements are being made in the understanding of flow separation and its control

Test of CCD Precision Limits for Differential Photometry

    Get PDF
Results of tests to demonstrate the very high differential-photometric stability of CCD light sensors are presented. The measurements reported here demonstrate that in a controlled laboratory environment, a front-illuminated CCD can provide differential-photometric measurements with reproducible precision approaching one part in 105. Practical limitations to the precision of differential-photometric measurements with CCDs and implications for spaceborne applications are discussed

Multiple frequency EPR studies on three forms of oxidized cytochrome c oxidase

Bovine heart mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase (cytochrome aa3) (EC 1.9.3.1) has been demonstrated to occur in several forms when the redox centers in the protein are thought to be fully oxidized. We report here the results of extensive EPR studies at 3, 8.9, 9.2, 9.4, 15 and 34 GHz on the resting state, the alternative resting state (with g = 12 at 9 GHz) and pulsed state (with g = 5 signal at 9 GHz). Theoretical consideration is given to all binary spin-coupling possibilities under the constraint that the iron atoms are either ferric or ferrous and the copper atoms are either cupric or cuprous. We conclude that the g = 12 signal can arise from any spin system with S > 1 and |D| = 0.15 cm-1. The g = 5 signals originate from an excited, integer-spin system with |D| = 0.035 cm-1, which is approximately 7 cm-1 above the ground state (not observed in EPR). It is pointed out that in interpretations of data and elaboration of suitable models in this field, the implications of spin-coupling should be considered in a comprehensive and not in a selective way. At 3 GHz, EPR spectra of CuA in the resting, pulsed and anaerobically oxidized states show that this center is identical in its EPR for all three states.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/25085/1/0000516.pd

TrES-2: The First Transiting Planet in the Kepler Field

    Get PDF
We announce the discovery of the second transiting hot Jupiter discovered by the Trans-atlantic Exoplanet Survey. The planet, which we dub TrES-2, orbits the nearby star GSC 03549-02811 every 2.47063 days. From high-resolution spectra, we determine that the star has T_eff = 5960 +/- 100 K and log(g) = 4.4 +/- 0.2, implying a spectral type of G0V and a mass of 1.08 +0.11/-0.05 M_sun. High-precision radial-velocity measurements confirm a sinusoidal variation with the period and phase predicted by the photometry, and rule out the presence of line-bisector variations that would indicate that the spectroscopic orbit is spurious. We estimate a planetary mass of 1.28 +0.09/-0.04 M_Jup. We model B, r, R, and I photometric timeseries of the 1.4%-deep transits and find a planetary radius of 1.24 +0.09/-0.06 R_Jup. This planet lies within the field of view of the NASA Kepler mission, ensuring that hundreds of upcoming transits will be monitored with exquisite precision and permitting a host of unprecedented investigations.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL. 15 pages, 2 figure

Probing Episodic Accretion in Very Low Luminosity Objects

Episodic accretion has been proposed as a solution to the long-standing luminosity problem in star formation; however, the process remains poorly understood. We present observations of line emission from N2H+ and CO isotopologues using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the envelopes of eight very low luminosity objects (VeLLOs). In five of the sources the spatial distribution of emission from N2H+ and CO isotopologues shows a clear anticorrelation. It is proposed that this is tracing the CO snow line in the envelopes: N2H+ emission is depleted toward the center of these sources, in contrast to the CO isotopologue emission, which exhibits a peak. The positions of the CO snow lines traced by the N2H+ emission are located at much larger radii than those calculated using the current luminosities of the central sources. This implies that these five sources have experienced a recent accretion burst because the CO snow line would have been pushed outward during the burst because of the increased luminosity of the central star. The N2H+ and CO isotopologue emission from DCE161, one of the other three sources, is most likely tracing a transition disk at a later evolutionary stage. Excluding DCE161, five out of seven sources (i.e., ~70%) show signatures of a recent accretion burst. This fraction is larger than that of the Class 0/I sources studied by Jørgensen et al. and Frimann et al., suggesting that the interval between accretion episodes in VeLLOs is shorter than that in Class 0/I sources

A New Spectroscopic and Photometric Analysis of the Transiting Planet Systems TrES-3 and TrES-4

We report new spectroscopic and photometric observations of the parent stars of the recently discovered transiting planets TrES-3 and TrES-4. A detailed abundance analysis based on high-resolution spectra yields [Fe/H] =0.19±0.08= -0.19\pm 0.08, Teff=5650±75T_\mathrm{eff} = 5650\pm 75 K, and logg=4.4±0.1\log g = 4.4\pm 0.1 for TrES-3, and [Fe/H] =+0.14±0.09= +0.14\pm 0.09, Teff=6200±75T_\mathrm{eff} = 6200\pm 75 K, and logg=4.0±0.1\log g = 4.0\pm0.1 for TrES-4. The accuracy of the effective temperatures is supported by a number of independent consistency checks. The spectroscopic orbital solution for TrES-3 is improved with our new radial-velocity measurements of that system, as are the light-curve parameters for both systems based on newly acquired photometry for TrES-3 and a reanalysis of existing photometry for TrES-4. We have redetermined the stellar parameters taking advantage of the strong constraint provided by the light curves in the form of the normalized separation a/Ra/R_\star (related to the stellar density) in conjunction with our new temperatures and metallicities. The masses and radii we derive are M_\star=0.928_{-0.048}^{+0.028} M_{\sun},R_\star = 0.829_{-0.022}^{+0.015} R_{\sun}, and M_\star = 1.404_{-0.134}^{+0.066} M_{\sun}, R_\star=1.846_{-0.087}^{+0.096} R_{\sun} for TrES-3 and TrES-4, respectively. With these revised stellar parameters we obtain improved values for the planetary masses and radii. We find Mp=1.9100.080+0.075MJupM_p = 1.910_{-0.080}^{+0.075} M_\mathrm{Jup}, Rp=1.3360.036+0.031RJupR_p=1.336_{-0.036}^{+0.031} R_\mathrm{Jup} for TrES-3, and Mp=0.925±0.082MJupM_p=0.925 \pm 0.082 M_\mathrm{Jup}, Rp=1.7830.086+0.093RJupR_p=1.783_{-0.086}^{+0.093} R_\mathrm{Jup} for TrES-4. We confirm TrES-4 as the planet with the largest radius among the currently known transiting hot Jupiters.Comment: 42 pages, 10 tables, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journa
