Impurity transport in temperature gradient driven turbulence
In the present paper the transport of impurities driven by trapped electron
(TE) mode turbulence is studied. Non-linear (NL) gyrokinetic simulations using
the code GENE are compared with results from quasilinear (QL) gyrokinetic
simulations and a computationally efficient fluid model. The main focus is on
model comparisons for electron temperature gra- dient driven turbulence
regarding the sign of the convective impurity velocity (pinch) and the impurity
density gradient R/LnZ (peaking factor) for zero impurity flux. In particular,
the scaling of the impurity peaking factors with impurity charge Z and with
driving temper- ature gradient is investigated and compared with the results
for Ion Temperature Gradient (ITG) driven turbulence. In addition, the impurity
peaking is compared to the main ion peaking obtained by a self-consistent fluid
calculation of the density gradients corresponding to zero particle fluxes.
For the scaling of the peaking factor with impurity charge Z, a weak
dependence is obtained from NL GENE and fluid simulations. The QL GENE results
show a stronger dependence for low Z impurities and overestimates the peaking
factor by up to a factor of two in this region. As in the case of ITG dominated
turbulence, the peaking factors saturate as Z increases, at a level much below
neoclassical predictions. However, the scaling with Z is weak or reversed as
compared to the ITG case.
The scaling of impurity peaking with the background temperature gradients is
found to be weak in the NL GENE and fluid simulations. The QL results are also
here found to significantly overestimate the peaking factor for low Z values.
For the parameters considered, the background density gradient for zero
particle flux is found to be slightly larger than the corresponding impurity

Educational aspirations in inner city schools
The research aimed to assess the nature and level of pupils’ educational aspirations and to elucidate the factors that influence these aspirations. A sample of five inner city comprehensive secondary schools were selected by their Local Authority because of poor pupil attendance, below average examination results and low rates of continuing in full-time education after the age of 16. Schools were all ethnically mixed and co-educational. Over 800 pupils aged 12-14 completed a questionnaire assessing pupils’ experience of home, school and their peers. A sub-sample of 48 pupils selected by teachers to reflect ethnicity and ability levels in individual schools also participated in detailed focus group interviews. There were no significant differences in aspirations by gender or year group, but differences between ethnic groups were marked. Black African, Asian Other and Pakistani groups had significantly higher educational aspirations than the White British group, who had the lowest aspirations. The results suggest the high aspirations of Black African, Asian Other and Pakistani pupils are mediated through strong academic self-concept, positive peer support, a commitment to schooling and high educational aspirations in the home. They also suggest that low educational aspirations may have different mediating influences in different ethnic groups. The low aspirations of White British pupils seem to relate most strongly to poor academic self-concept and low educational aspirations in the home, while for Black Caribbean pupils disaffection, negative peers and low commitment to schooling appear more relevant. Interviews with pupils corroborated the above findings and further illuminated the factors students described as important in their educational aspirations. The results are discussed in relation to theories of aspiration which stress its nature as a cultural capacity
The experimental gas-phase structures of 1,3,5-trisilylbenzene and hexasilylbenzene and the theoretical structures of all benzenes with three or more silyl substituents
The structures of 1,3,5-trisilylbenzene and hexasilylbenzene in the gas phase have been determined by electron diffraction, and that of 1,3,5-trisilylbenzene by X-ray crystallography. The structures of three trisilylbenzene isomers, three tetrasilylbenzenes, pentasilylbenzene and hexasilylbenzene have been computed, ab initio and using Density Functional Theory, at levels up to MP2/6-31G*. The primary effect of silyl substituents is to narrow the ring angle at the substituted carbon atoms. Steric interactions between silyl groups on neighbouring carbon atoms lead first to displacement of these groups away from one another, and then to displacement out of the ring plane, with alternate groups moving to opposite sides of the ring. In the extreme example, hexasilylbenzene, the SiCCSi dihedral angle is 17.8(8)°
Extensive spontaneous plasticity of corticospinal projections after primate spinal cord injury.
Although axonal regeneration after CNS injury is limited, partial injury is frequently accompanied by extensive functional recovery. To investigate mechanisms underlying spontaneous recovery after incomplete spinal cord injury, we administered C7 spinal cord hemisections to adult rhesus monkeys and analyzed behavioral, electrophysiological and anatomical adaptations. We found marked spontaneous plasticity of corticospinal projections, with reconstitution of fully 60% of pre-lesion axon density arising from sprouting of spinal cord midline-crossing axons. This extensive anatomical recovery was associated with improvement in coordinated muscle recruitment, hand function and locomotion. These findings identify what may be the most extensive natural recovery of mammalian axonal projections after nervous system injury observed to date, highlighting an important role for primate models in translational disease research
Very Low Temperature Tunnelling Spectroscopy in the heavy fermion superconductor PrOsSb
We present scanning tunnelling spectroscopy measurements on the heavy fermion
superconductor PrOsSb. Our results show that the superconducting gap
opens over a large part of the Fermi surface. The deviations from isotropic BCS
s-wave behavior are discussed in terms of a finite distribution of values of

On free evolution of self gravitating, spherically symmetric waves
We perform a numerical free evolution of a selfgravitating, spherically
symmetric scalar field satisfying the wave equation. The evolution equations
can be written in a very simple form and are symmetric hyperbolic in
Eddington-Finkelstein coordinates. The simplicity of the system allow to
display and deal with the typical gauge instability present in these
coordinates. The numerical evolution is performed with a standard method of
lines fourth order in space and time. The time algorithm is Runge-Kutta while
the space discrete derivative is symmetric (non-dissipative). The constraints
are preserved under evolution (within numerical errors) and we are able to

A time-dependent coordinate transformation of a constant coeffcient hyperbolic equation which results in a variable coeffcient problem is considered. By using the energy method, we derive well-posed boundary conditions for the continuous problem. It is shown that the number of boundary conditions depend on the coordinate transformation. By using Summation-by-Parts (SBP) operators for the space discretization and weak boundary conditions, an energy stable finite dieffrence scheme is obtained. We also show how to construct a time-dependent penalty formulation that automatically imposes the right number of boundary conditions. Numerical calculations corroborate the stability and accuracy of the approximations
A method for isolating and culturing placental cells from failed early equine pregnancies
Early pregnancy loss occurs in 6–10% of equine pregnancies making it the main cause of reproductive wastage. Despite this, reasons for the losses are known in only 16% of cases. Lack of viable conceptus material has inhibited investigations of many potential genetic and pathological causes. We present a method for isolating and culturing placental cells from failed early equine pregnancies. Trophoblast cells from 18/30 (60%) failed equine pregnancies of gestational ages 14–65 days were successfully cultured in three different media, with the greatest growth achieved for cells cultured in AmnioChrome™ Plus. Genomic DNA of a suitable quality for molecular assays was also isolated from 29/30 of these cases. This method will enable future investigations determining pathologies causing EPL
The Lyngen Gabbro: the lower crust of an Ordovician Incipient-Arc
We present evidence for the origin of the Lyngen Gabbro of the Ordovician Lyngen Magmatic Complex in Troms, Northern Norway. The two magmatic suites of the Lyngen Gabbro strike parallel NNE-SSW, and have distinct magmatic signatures. We define these signatures by using major and trace-element analyses together with selected major- and trace-element mineral analyses and 143Nd/144Nd-isotope whole-rock analyses of gabbroic to tonalitic plutonic rocks from seven detailed cross-sections from this large gabbro-complex. The Western suite of the Lyngen Gabbro precipitated from magma that may have been derived from the same system as the associated volcanic rocks. The gabbros have high An-content (An>90) of their plagioclases relative to co-existing mafic minerals. Together with somewhat high ɛNd(t) values (+6), this implies that the parental magmas were hydrous tholeiites similar to those found in back arc basins today. The Eastern suite, on the other hand, consist of cumulates that were precipitated from melts resembling those of ultra-depleted high-Ca boninitic magmas found in fore-arcs. Extremely high-An plagioclases (An>95) co-exist with evolved mafic minerals and oxides, and the ɛNd(t) values are lower (+4) than in the Western suite. The Eastern suite has no volcanic counterpart, but dikes intersecting the suites have compositions that possibly represent its parental magma. The oceanic Rypdalen Shear Zone generally separates the two suites in the north, but several non-tectonic transitions from boninitic to tholeiitic signatures southwards advocate that the magmatism happened concurrently. The magmatic proximity between the suites, the hydrous magmatism and the absence of a silicic or calc-alkaline mature arc section, suggests that the Lyngen Gabbro formed in the Iapetus Ocean under conditions presently found in incipient arcs later emplaced as outer arc highs
