Optical Photometry and Spectroscopy of the Suspected Cool Algol AV Delphini: Determination of the Physical Properties
We present new spectroscopic and BVRI photometric observations of the double-lined eclipsing binary AV Del ( period = 3:85 days) conducted over six observing seasons. A detailed radial velocity and light-curve analysis of the optical data shows the system to be most likely semidetached, with the less massive and cooler star filling its Roche lobe. The system is probably a member of the rare class of ‘‘cool Algol’’ systems, which are distinguished from the ‘‘classical’’ Algol systems in that the mass-gaining component is also a late-type star rather than a B- or A-type star. By combining the spectroscopic and photometric analyses, we derive accurate absolute masses for the components of M1 = 1.453 + 0.028 M and M2 = 0.705 + 0.014 M and radii of R1 = 2.632 + 0.030 R and R2 = 4.233 + 0.060 R, as well as effective temperatures of 6000 + 200 and 4275 + 150 K for the primary and secondary, respectively. There are no obvious signs of activity (spottedness) in the optical light curve of the binary
Effect of speaker age on speech recognition and perceived listening effort in older adults with hearing loss
Published online January 2012Purpose: Older adults exhibit difficulty understanding speech that has been experimentally degraded. Age-related changes to the speech mechanism lead to natural degradations in signal quality. We tested the hypothesis that older adults with hearing loss would exhibit declines in speech recognition when listening to the speech of older adults, compared with the speech of younger adults, and would report greater amounts of listening effort in this task.
Methods: Nineteen individuals with age-related hearing loss completed speech recognition and listening effort scaling tasks. Both were conducted in quiet, when listening to high and low predictability phrases produced by younger and older speakers respectively.
Results: No significant difference in speech recognition existed when stimuli were derived from younger or older speakers. However, perceived effort was significantly higher when listening to speech from older adults, as compared to younger adults.
Conclusions: For older individuals with hearing loss, natural degradations in signal quality may require greater listening effort. However, they do not interfere with speech recognition – at least in quiet. Follow-up investigation of the effect of speaker age on speech recognition and listening effort under more challenging noise conditions appears warranted

New Rotation Periods in the Pleiades: Interpreting Activity Indicators
We present results of photometric monitoring campaigns of G, K and M dwarfs in the Pleiades carried out in 1994, 1995 and 1996. We have determined rotation periods for 18 stars in this cluster. In this paper, we examine the validity of using observables such as X-ray activity and amplitude of photometric variations as indicators of angular momentum loss. We report the discovery of cool, slow rotators with high amplitudes of variation. This contradicts previous conclusions about the use of amplitudes as an alternate diagnostic of the saturation of angular momentum loss. We show that the X-ray data can be used as observational indicators of mass-dependent saturation in the angular momentum loss proposed on theoretical grounds
Teaching ultrasound in a curricular course according to certified EFSUMB standards during undergraduate medical education: a prospective study
Background: As a non-invasive and readily available diagnostic tool, ultrasound is one of the most important imaging techniques in medicine. Ultrasound is usually trained during residency preferable according to German Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM) standards. Our curriculum calls for undergraduate training in ultrasound of medical students in their 4th year of undergraduate education. An explorative pilot study evaluated the acceptance of this teaching method, and compared it to other practical activities in medical education at Muenster University. Methods: 240 medical students in their 4th year of undergraduate medical education participated in the training and completed a pre- and post-questionnaire for self-assessment of technical knowledge, self-assurance of the procedure, and motivation in performing ultrasound using a Likert scale. Moreover, students were asked about their interest in pursuing a career in internal medicine. To compare this training to other educational activities a standardized online evaluation tool was used. A direct observation of procedural skills assessment (DOPS) for the first time applied on ultrasound aimed to independently assess the success of our teaching method. Results: There was a significant increase in technical knowledge and self-assurance (p < 0.001) of the students’ self-assessments. The clinical relevance and self-motivation of the teaching were evaluated positively. The students’ DOPS results demonstrated proficiency in the understanding of anatomic structures shown in ultrasonographic images, including terminology, machine settings, and transducer frequencies. Conclusions: Training ultrasound according to certified DEGUM standards was successful and should be offered in undergraduate medical education. The evaluation of the course affirmed the necessity, quality and clinical relevance of the course with a top ranking score of hands-on training courses within the educational activities of the Medical Faculty of Muenster.<br
Volatile Content of 4-Vesta: Evidence from Unequilibrated Eucrites
Eucrites are a class of basaltic meteorites that, along with the howardites and diogenites, likely derive from the asteroid 4-Vesta. This asteroid is depleted in moderately volatile elements relative to the Earth and carbonaceous chondrites. Extrapolation of this depletion trend predicts that bulk silicate 4-Vesta (BSV) contains at most 250-1000 g/g H2O, which is approximately a factor of two lower than the H2O content of Earth. To obtain more accurate H2O and F estimates for BSV, we examined four unequilibrated antarctic meteorites, Yamato(Y)-793548, Y-82210, Y-75011, and Y-74450, by EPMA and SIMS. Pyroxenes contain MgO-rich cores and FeO-rich rims, consistent with primary magmatic zoning. Volatile concentrations generally follow patterns expected for growth zoning with lower values in the cores and higher in the rims. These features indicate that thermal metamorphism and other post-crystallization processes did not significantly perturb the volatile contents of these unequilibrated eucrite pyroxenes. We used these data to derive best estimates for the BSV H2O and F content based on experimentally determined pyroxene-melt partition coefficients and models for magma generation on Vesta. In addition, we measured D/H in the early crystallizing pyroxenes and late crystallzing apatites. We find that the D/H of pyroxene and apatite are within error of one another as well as previous measurements of apatite in equilibrated eucrites. These results imply that degassing was minimal or did not fractionate D/H. Degassing may have been limited if eucrites were shallowly emplaced sills or dykes, or the total H2O content of the magmas was too low for vapor saturation. An alternative mechanism for limited D/H fractionation is that degassing did occur, but the H2/H2O of the exsolved vapor was approximately 15:85, as predicted from experiments
Transit Timing Analysis in the HAT-P-32 System
We present the results of 45 transit observations obtained for the transiting exoplanet HATP- 32b. The transits have been observed using several telescopes mainly throughout the YETI (Young Exoplanet Transit Initiative) network. In 25 cases, complete transit light curves with a timing precision better than 1.4 min have been obtained. These light curves have been used to refine the system properties, namely inclination i, planet-to-star radius ratio Rp/Rs, and the ratio between the semimajor axis and the stellar radius a/Rs. First analyses by Hartman et al. suggests the existence of a second planet in the system, thus we tried to find an additional body using the transit timing variation (TTV) technique. Taking also the literature data points into account, we can explain all mid-transit times by refining the linear ephemeris by 21 ms. Thus, we can exclude TTV amplitudes of more than ∼1.5min

New SPB stars in the field of the young open cluster NGC 2244 discovered by the MOST photometric satellite
During two weeks of nearly continuous optical photometry of the young open
cluster NGC 2244 obtained by the MOST satellite, we discovered two new SPB
stars, GSC 00154-00785 and GSC 00154-01871. We present frequency analyses of
the MOST light curves of these stars, which reveal two oscillation frequencies
(0.61 and 0.71 c/d) in GSC 00154-00785 and two (0.40 and 0.51 c/d) in GSC
00154-01871. These frequency ranges are consistent with g-modes of  excited in models of main-sequence or pre-main-sequence (PMS) stars of
masses 4.5 - 5  and solar composition .
Published proper motion measurements and radial velocities are insufficient to
establish unambiguously cluster membership for these two stars. However, the
PMS models which fit best their eigenspectra have ages consistent with NGC
2244. If cluster membership can be confirmed, these would be the first known
PMS SPB stars, and would open a new window on testing asteroseismically the
interior structures of PMS stars.Comment: accepted for publication in MNRA
