Learning to share and sharing to learn – professionaldevelopment of language teachers in HE to foster open educational practices
This case study presents the staff-development perspective of the ‘Collaborative Writing and Peer Review Project’ developed at the Department of Languages, at the Open University, UK, between November 2011 and March 2012. The project was set up to promote the professional development of teachers through collaborative writing and peer review, encouraging open educational practices (OEP) and by extension the production and publication of teaching resources in an open repository. As teacher developers working in a blended environment, the authors facilitate opportunities for sharing and developing good practice as part of a broad staff development programme to help teachers understand and integrate innovative approaches into their practice. Participants in this project brought with them a range of experiences as practitioners from their work with language students both at and outside the University. This case study focuses on the professional development aspect of this initiative. It presents the different aspects of the process and analyses teachers’ involvement with social online tools and the impact on teaching practice of engaging with the process of collaboration
Computer program calculates gamma ray source strengths of materials exposed to neutron fluxes
Computer program contains an input library of nuclear data for 44 elements and their isotopes to determine the induced radioactivity for gamma emitters. Minimum input requires the irradiation history of the element, a four-energy-group neutron flux, specification of an alloy composition by elements, and selection of the output
Apsidal Motion of the Massive, Benchmark Eclipsing Binary V578 Mon
V578 Mon is a system of two early B-type stars in the Rosette Nebula
star-forming region (NGC 2244), and is one of only nine eclipsing binaries with
component masses greater than 10 M\odot whose physical parameters have been
determined with an accuracy of better than 3%. It is therefore a benchmark
system for evolutionary and stellar structure models of newly formed massive
stars. Combining our multi-band light curves spanning 40 yr with previous light
curve data from the literature, we fit a model light curve that for the first
time includes the effects of apsidal motion of the system. We measure an
apsidal period of 33.48+0.10-0.06 yr. As a consequence of incorporating the
apsidal motion into the modeling of the system's orbital parameters, we
determine an updated eccentricity of e = 0.07755+0.00022-0.00027, which differs
significantly from the value previously reported in the literature. Evidently,
the inclusion of apsidal motion in the light curve modeling significantly
affects the eccentricity determination. Incorporating these key parameters into
a comprehensive model of the system's physical parameters-including internal
structure constraints- will bring V578 Mon to the next level of benchmark
precision and utility.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, to appear in the Astronomical Journa
AAVSO-Material, in Diagrammen dargestellt. The author presents 103 O-C diagrams of long period variable stars, essentially based on AAVSO observation al material. The LUDENDORFF classification of light curves is compared with quantitative parameters of mean light curves. Obviously, no positive correlation be introduced between form of the mean light curve and O-C pattern. Possibly, some variables with little scattering and strongly zigzagging O-C are candidates for realperiod changes
A set of CCO-frames, made with the 60 cm Cassegrain of the Observatory of the Natural Science Association Osnabrück and a SBIG ST-6 without filters, shows strong variations in the inner coma of Hale-Bopp in a 3x4 arc minutes wide field
