    Evaluation économique des biens et services des forêts tunisiennes

    L’évaluation économique des biens et services des écosystèmes forestiers est essentielle afin de justifier les investissements nécessaires à leur conservation ou à leur extension, et à démontrer les conséquences de la dégradation de ces écosystèmes sur le bien-être humain. Cet article vise à évaluer les biens et services fournis par les forêts tunisiennes, et en particulier par deux écosystèmes représentatifs, le chêne-liège et le pin d’Alep. Le concept de Valeur Economique Totale a été utilisé afin d’identifier les différentes valeurs à évaluer. Les résultats montrent que, dans l’ensemble, les forêts tunisiennes génèrent des bénéfices annuels de 91 euros par hectare. Au niveau national, l’amélioration de la production fourragère et la conservation des bassins versants devraient être mieux intégrées dans les stratégies et plans de développement rural et les chaînes de valeur des produits forestiers devraient être développées. Au niveau local, l’évaluation économique des investissements et l’utilisation d’instruments spécifiques concrets pour assurer leur durabilité (par exemple les Paiements pour les Services Environnementaux) doivent être mis en place

    Enhancing Market Readiness for nZEB Implementation

    ABSTRACT: Despite transposing the 2010/31/EU Directive's requirements creates legal responsibilities at the national level, the nearly Zero energy building (nZEB) principle does not appear to be widely adopted just yet in many nations. Previous studies have shown that the most significant barriers include determining the cost-effective ideal integration of the technologies appropriate for nZEB and the skills constraints faced by the construction industry. In order to meet the challenge of an efficient nZEB implementation, existing certification courses and training programs are still insufficient and inadequate, and hiring experienced specialists for building retrofit and new construction is not common practice. The traditionally conservative real estate industry is nevertheless hesitant to adopt the new building standards and practices, notably in the residential sector, despite a significant movement towards nZEB and extensive energy renovation. In this specific situation, this paper provides a preliminary analysis of the European project nZEB Ready Enhancing Market Readiness for nZEB Implementation, which aims to address the issue of the effective implementation of the nZEB and make use of new possibilities to act at the market level in order to boost the market's readiness for a successful implementation of the nZEB and to encourage demand for energy-related skills among construction workers and specialists in the countries involved and beyond.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    In a previous work (Lucchiari and Folgieri, 2015) we considered communication among young people. New digital-natives do not communicate in a traditional way, but they choose different means and ways. It is not a surprising conclusion that a large part of digital-natives considers obsolete both Web sites\u2019 structure and Internet navigation modes, learning instruments and paradigms and communication tools, choosing, instead, fast and immediate media like mobile phone communication, social networking and so on (Croitoru et al. 2011). Notwithstanding we could think they lack of communication skills, actually, they communicate with each other much more than ever done, using not only the verbal language, but also images, videos, sounds, and especially emotions. We named this phenomenon telepatheia or, better, sympateia, meaning that they seem to keep in contact independently by the mean. Of course, on our intention, this does not mean that we are observing a new organic evolution, but surely a kind of evolution can be traced: an era in which human and machines are evolving, influencing one each other, determining a specific kind of communication strongly influenced and related to technology. In this paper, starting from our previous studies and from our concept of \u201csympateia\u201d, we performed a new experiment related to brain rhythms synchronization. Through our experiment, described in the following chapter, We want to explore the communication mechanisms of telepathy (in the ancient Greek assumption of \u201ctelepatia\u201d\uf020that is [tele]=\u201ddistance\u201d and [pateia]=\u201demotion, feeling\u201d). This does not mean that we are trying to make humans telepathic, but we aim to deeply understand communication mechanisms among humans through human-computer interaction BCI devices. This means to change the point of view of brain and Information Technology researches, stressing the point of view of self-understanding of the own brain

    Association of MUTYH and colorectal cancer

    Mutations in the MUTYH gene have been reported to be associated with increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. In this study, we confirmed this association using original data on 928 colorectal cancer cases and 845 healthy controls from Scotland. We then conducted a meta-analysis from published data on the association between mutations at MUTYH and colorectal cancer risk. We show for the first time a small but significant mono-allelic effect with a genotype relative risk (GRR) of 1.27 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01–1.61), and confirm and give a more precise estimate of the strong bi-allelic effect with an estimated GRR of 117 (95% CI: 74–184). This study underscores the need for large sample sizes in order to identify small gene effects when the disease allele frequency is low

    Secure Opportunistic Multipath Key Exchange

    The security of today\u27s widely used communication security protocols is based on trust in Certificate Authorities (CAs). However, the real security of this approach is debatable, since certificate handling is tedious and many recent attacks have undermined the trust in CAs. On the other hand, opportunistic encryption protocols such as Tcpcrypt, which are currently gaining momentum as an alternative to no encryption, have similar security to using untrusted CAs or self-signed certificates: they only protect against passive attackers. In this paper, we present a key exchange protocol, Secure Multipath Key Exchange (SMKEX), that enables all the benefits of opportunistic encryption (no need for trusted third parties or pre-established secrets), as well as proven protection against some classes of active attackers. Furthermore, SMKEX can be easily extended to a trust-on-first-use setting and can be easily integrated with TLS, providing the highest security for opportunistic encryption to date while also increasing the security of standard TLS. We show that SMKEX is made practical by the current availability of path diversity between different AS-es. We also show a method to create path diversity with encrypted tunnels without relying on the network topology. These allow SMKEX to provide protection against most adversaries for a majority of Alexa top 100 web sites. We have implemented SMKEX using a modified Multipath TCP kernel implementation and a user library that overwrites part of the socket API, allowing unmodified applications to take advantage of the security provided by SMKEX

    Survival of MUTYH-Associated Polyposis Patients With Colorectal Cancer and Matched Control Colorectal Cancer Patients

    Background: MUTYH-associated polyposis is a recessively inherited disorder characterized by a lifetime risk of colorectal cancer that is up to 100%. Because specific histological and molecular genetic features of MUTYH-associated polyposis colorectal cancers might influence tumor behavior and patient survival, we compared survival between patients with MUTYH-associated polyposis colorectal cancer and matched control patients with colorectal cancer from the general population. Method:s In this retrospective multicenter cohort study from Europe, 147 patients with MUTYH-associated polyposis colorectal cancer were compared with 272 population-based control patients with colorectal cancer who were matched for country, age at diagnosis, year of diagnosis, stage, and subsite of colorectal cancer. Kaplan–Meier survival and Cox regression analyses were used to compare survival between patients with MUTYH-associated polyposis colorectal cancer and control patients with colorectal cancer. All statistical tests were two-sided. Results: Five-year survival for patients with MUTYH-associated polyposis colorectal cancer was 78% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 70% to 84%) and for control patients was 63% (95% CI = 56% to 69%) (log-rank test, P = .002). After adjustment for differences in age, stage, sex, subsite, country, and year of diagnosis, survival remained better for MUTYH-associated polyposis colorectal cancer patients than for control patients (hazard ratio of death = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.32 to 0.72). Conclusions: In a European study cohort, we found statistically significantly better survival for patients with MUTYH-associated polyposis colorectal cancer than for matched control patients with colorectal cancer

    Computer-assisted and patient-specific 3-D planning and evaluation of a single-cut rotational osteotomy for complex long-bone deformities

    Malunion after long bone fracture results in an incorrect position of the distal bone segment. This misalignment may lead to reduced function of the limb, early osteoarthritis and chronic pain. An established treatment option is a corrective osteotomy. For complex malunions, a single-cut rotational osteotomy is sometimes preferred in cases of angular deformity in three dimensions. However, planning and performing this type of osteotomy is relatively complex. This report describes a computer-assisted method for 3-D planning and realizing a single-cut rotational osteotomy with a patient-specific cutting guide for orienting the osteotomy and an angled jig for adjusting the rotation angle. The accuracy and reproducibility of the method is evaluated experimentally using plastic bones. In addition, complex rotational deformities are simulated by a computer to investigate the relation between deformity and correction parameters. The computed relation between deformity and correction parameters enables the surgeon to judge the feasibility of a single-cut rotational osteotomy. This appears possible for deformities combining axial misalignment with sufficient axial rotation. The proposed 3-D method of preoperative planning and transfer with a patient-specific cutting guide and angled jig renders the osteotomy procedure easily applicable, accurate, reproducible, and is a good alternative for complex and expensive navigation systems

    A large-scale meta-analysis to refine colorectal cancer risk estimates associated with MUTYH variants

    Background: defective DNA repair has a causal role in hereditary colorectal cancer (CRC). Defects in the base excision repair gene MUTYH are responsible for MUTYH-associated polyposis and CRC predisposition as an autosomal recessive trait. Numerous reports have suggested MUTYH mono-allelic variants to be low penetrance risk alleles. We report a large collaborative meta-analysis to assess and refine CRC risk estimates associated with bi-allelic and mono-allelic MUTYH variants and investigate age and sex influence on risk. Methods: MUTYH genotype data were included from 20 565 cases and 15 524 controls. Three logistic regression models were tested: a crude model; adjusted for age and sex; adjusted for age, sex and study. Results: all three models produced very similar results. MUTYH bi-allelic carriers demonstrated a 28-fold increase in risk (95% confidence interval (CI): 6.95-115). Significant bi-allelic effects were also observed for G396D and Y179C/G396D compound heterozygotes and a marginal mono-allelic effect for variant Y179C (odds ratio (OR)=1.34; 95% CI: 1.00-1.80). A pooled meta-analysis of all published and unpublished datasets submitted showed bi-allelic effects for MUTYH, G396D and Y179C (OR=10.8, 95% CI: 5.02-23.2; OR=6.47, 95% CI: 2.33-18.0; OR=3.35, 95% CI: 1.14-9.89) and marginal mono-allelic effect for variants MUTYH (OR=1.16, 95% CI: 1.00-1.34) and Y179C alone (OR=1.34, 95% CI: 1.01-1.77). Conclusions: overall, this large study refines estimates of disease risk associated with mono-allelic and bi-allelic MUTYH carriers

    A systematic review of operating room ventilation

    Ventilation systems are the primary way of eliminating airborne pathogenic particles in an operating room (OR). However, such systems can be complex due to factors such as different surgical instruments, diverse room sizes, various staff counts, types of clothing used, different surgical types and duration, medications, and patient conditions. OR ventilation should provide a thermally comfortable environment for the surgical staff team members while preventing the patient from suffering from any extreme hypothermia. Many technical, logistical, and ethical implications need to be considered in the early stage of designing a ventilation system for an OR. Years of research and a significant number of publications have highlighted the controversy and disagreement among infection specialists, design engineers, and ventilation experts in this context. This review article aims to provide a good understanding of OR ventilation systems in the context of air quality and infection control from existing research and provide multidimensional insights for appropriate design and operation of the OR. To this end, we have conducted a systematic review of the literature, covering 253 articles in this context. Systematic review and meta-analyses were used to map the evidence and identify research gaps in the existing clinical, practical, and engineering knowledge. The present study is categorized into six research focuses: ventilation system, thermal comfort, staff work practice and obstacles, door operation and passage, air cleaning technology, emission rate, and clothing systems. In the conclusion, we summarize the key limitations of the existing studies and insights for future research direction

    Integrins α2β1 and α11β1 regulate the survival of mesenchymal stem cells on collagen I

    Although mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are the natural source for bone regeneration, the exact mechanisms governing MSC crosstalk with collagen I have not yet been uncovered. Cell adhesion to collagen I is mostly mediated by three integrin receptors – α1β1, α2β1 and α11β1. Using human MSC (hMSC), we show that α11 subunit exhibited the highest basal expression levels but on osteogenic stimulation, both α2 and α11 integrins were significantly upregulated. To elucidate the possible roles of collagen-binding integrins, we applied short hairpin RNA (shRNA)-mediated knockdown in hMSC and found that α2 or α11 deficiency, but not α1, results in a tremendous reduction of hMSC numbers owing to mitochondrial leakage accompanied by Bcl-2-associated X protein upregulation. In order to clarify the signaling conveyed by the collagen-binding integrins in hMSC, we analyzed the activation of focal adhesion kinase, extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase and serine/threonine protein kinase B (PKB/Akt) kinases and detected significantly reduced Akt phosphorylation only in α2- and α11-shRNA hMSC. Finally, experiments with hMSC from osteoporotic patients revealed a significant downregulation of α2 integrin concomitant with an augmented mitochondrial permeability. In conclusion, our study describes for the first time that disturbance of α2β1- or α11β1-mediated interactions to collagen I results in the cell death of MSCs and urges for further investigations examining the impact of MSCs in bone conditions with abnormal collagen I
