: This article aims to answer three main questions: what constitutes ethical leadership, how leadership in Malay culture in Jambi works and how the ethical leadership based from Seloko Jambi customs implemented. The results obtained are: (1) ethics in Jambi's Malay is understood as morality, (2) there are few traits, temperament, or action that a leader should not have in Malay Jambi culture, as mentioned in Seloko “Burung Kecik, Ciling Mato” or “small bird, blind eyes" (people who works only find fault with others and tell it when go everywhere), and (3) a leader must have good morals, are characterized by the following properties: sincere, gentle, fair, generous and thoughtful

Green Tea Attenuates Oxidative Stress and Downregulates the Expression of Angiotensin II AT1Receptor in Renal and Hepatic Tissues of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats

Get PDF
This study investigates the potential of green tea to modulate oxidative stress and angiotensin II AT1receptor expression in renal and hepatic tissues of diabetic rats. Three groups of rats were studied after 8 weeks following diabetes induction: normal, streptozotocin-induced diabetic (diabetic control), and green-tea-treated diabetic rats. Total antioxidant, catalase, and malondialdehyde levels were assayed by standard procedures. Levels of AT1receptor labeling, in renal and hepatic tissues of the three rat groups, were immunohistochemically investigated using an anti-AT1receptor antibody. Levels of total antioxidant and catalase were significantly reduced, whereas malondialdehyde levels and AT1receptor labeling were significantly increased in renal and hepatic tissues of diabetic control rats compared to normal rats. Compared to diabetic control rats, total antioxidant and catalase levels were significantly increased, whereas malondialdehyde levels and AT1receptor labeling in the green-tea-treated diabetic group were significantly reduced throughout hepatic lobules and renal cortical and medullary vascular and tubular segments to levels comparable to those observed in normal rats. The capacity of green tea to modulate diabetes-induced oxidative stress and AT1receptor upregulation may be beneficial in opposing the deleterious effects of excessive angiotensin II signaling, manifested by progressive renal and hepatic tissue damage.</jats:p

Arterial stiffness index as a marker for the occurrence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease

Get PDF
Background: Arterial functional changes reflected by vascular stiffness might occur at early stages of cardiovascular disease before the morphological alterations reflected by increasing the intima media thickness and it is widely used as a very sensitive indicator of functional vascular damage. Objectives: This study is aimed to correlate ultrasound detected vascular functional changes with the severity and extent of coronary artery disease. Patients and methods: Sonographic scans were performed on 100 Patients (61males, 39 females) with an age range of (40-65years) for measuring carotid and brachial arteries end diastolic and end systolic diameters to calculate vascular stiffness index . Coronary CT angiography has been used to visualize the atherosclerotic plaque to define the degree of luminal stenosis by creation of high-quality images which are obtained by the multislice CT spiral scanners. Results: A positive statistical correlation was observed between the stiffness index of both carotid and brachial arteries in single coronary lesion (SCL), multiple coronary lesion (MCL) and control groups in addition to the significant positive correlation between both arteries stiffness index with the percentage of coronary artery stenosis in SCL group. Significant difference between the arterial stiffness index among the study groups is only noticed for carotid artery between the control and MCL groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: Conduit arterial stiffness index is a good indicator of the severity and extent of coronary artery disease

Assessment of endothelial dysfunction by flow mediated dilatation in patients with Coronary Artery Disease

Get PDF
Background: Endothelial dysfunction is thought to be a key event in the development of atherosclerosis. It is a systemic process that simultaneously affects different vascular territories including coronary arteries. It is recommended that noninvasive approaches assessing endothelial function in peripheral vessels like flow mediated dilatation are indirectly representative of coronary vascular function. Objectives: This study is aimed to assess endothelial dysfunction by using flow mediated dilatation in patients with coronary artery disease Patients and methods: 82 patients of either sex with an age range of 40-65years are involved in this study. Each patient was subjected to two tests; first test was the flow mediated dilatation percentage (FMD%) measurement to assess endothelial functional integrity and second one was coronary computerized tomography angiography for measuring the percentage of coronary artery stenosis. Results: the results of this study revealed that FMD% is inversely correlated with the percentage of coronary artery stenosis (p value <0.01). FMD% in patients having a single coronary vessel atheromatous stenosis (9.9±3.5) % was significantly lower than that of control subjects (15.3±7) %, p<0.0001. Conclusion: this study concludes that FMD% of brachial artery could be used as a marker for systemic endothelial functional integrity including that of coronary arteries

Voltammetric determination of sumatriptan in the presence of naproxen using a modified screen printed electrode

Get PDF
Background and purpose: Sumatriptan is used to alleviate symptoms of migraine headaches, particularly during acute attacks. Naproxen is a medication that provides relief from pain, inflammation, and fever. Therefore, determination of them is important. Experimental approach: In the present work, CoMoO4 nanos¬heets were synthesized in a basic and easy way. A screen-printed graphite electrode's surface was altered using the as-prepared CoMoO4 nanosheets' high electroactivity to create a CoMoO4 nanosheets-modified screen-printed electrode (CoMoO4 NSs-SPE), which was then employed for sumatriptan's electrochemical oxidation. Due to the superior electron transfer characteristics and catalytic activity of the produced CoMoO4 nanosheets, the results demonstrated a notable improvement in sumatriptan's current responses. This study examined the electrochemical behavior of sumatriptan on the CoMoO4 NSs-SPE utilizing a number of methods, including as chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry, and differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Key results: With a high sensitivity of 0.0718 μA/μM and a good correlation value of 0.9998, a linear calibration curve was obtained over a broad concentration range of 0.02-600.0 μM, suggesting a strong linear connection between the concentration and the response. Based on a signal-to-noise ratio of 3, the limit of detection for sumatriptan was determined to be 0.01 μM, suggesting a high degree of sensitivity for the detection technique. DPV results showed that the CoMoO4 nanosheets-modified screen-printed electrode (CoMoO4 NSs-SPE) could detect naproxen and sumatriptan at the same time. Conclusion: The created sensor's usefulness and efficacy in real-world applications were demonstrated when it was successfully used to identify the target analytes in actual samples

Background: SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has had many significant impacts within the surgical realm, and surgeons have been obligated to reconsider almost every aspect of daily clinical practice. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study reported in compliance with the CHERRIES guidelines and conducted through an online platform from June 14th to July 15th, 2020. The primary outcome was the burden of burnout during the pandemic indicated by the validated Shirom-Melamed Burnout Measure. Results: Nine hundred fifty-four surgeons completed the survey. The median length of practice was 10 years; 78.2% included were male with a median age of 37 years old, 39.5% were consultants, 68.9% were general surgeons, and 55.7% were affiliated with an academic institution. Overall, there was a significant increase in the mean burnout score during the pandemic; longer years of practice and older age were significantly associated with less burnout. There were significant reductions in the median number of outpatient visits, operated cases, on-call hours, emergency visits, and research work, so, 48.2% of respondents felt that the training resources were insufficient. The majority (81.3%) of respondents reported that their hospitals were included in the management of COVID-19, 66.5% felt their roles had been minimized; 41% were asked to assist in non-surgical medical practices, and 37.6% of respondents were included in COVID-19 management. Conclusions: There was a significant burnout among trainees. Almost all aspects of clinical and research activities were affected with a significant reduction in the volume of research, outpatient clinic visits, surgical procedures, on-call hours, and emergency cases hindering the training. Trial registration: The study was registered on clicaltrials.gov "NCT04433286" on 16/06/2020
