Hysteretic magnetoresistance and thermal bistability in a magnetic two-dimensional hole system
Colossal negative magnetoresistance and the associated field-induced
insulator-to-metal transition, the most characteristic features of magnetic
semiconductors, are observed in n-type rare earth oxides and chalcogenides,
p-type manganites, n-type and p-type diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) as
well as in quantum wells of n-type DMS. Here, we report on magnetostransport
studies of Mn modulation-doped InAs quantum wells, which reveal a magnetic
field driven and bias voltage dependent insulator-to-metal transition with
abrupt and hysteretic changes of resistance over several orders of magnitude.
These phenomena coexist with the quantised Hall effect in high magnetic fields.
We show that the exchange coupling between a hole and the parent Mn acceptor
produces a magnetic anisotropy barrier that shifts the spin relaxation time of
the bound hole to a 100 s range in compressively strained quantum wells. This
bistability of the individual Mn acceptors explains the hysteretic behaviour
while opening prospects for information storing and processing. At high bias
voltage another bistability, caused by the overheating of electrons10, gives
rise to abrupt resistance jumps
Profaning the sacred in leadership studies: A reading of Murakami's A Wild Sheep Chase
The leadership literature is full of stories of heroic self-sacrifice. Sacrificial leadership behaviour, some scholars conclude, is to be recommended. In this article we follow Keith Grint's conceptualization of leadership as necessarily pertaining to the sacred, but-drawing on Giorgio Agamben's notion of profanation-we highlight the need for organization scholars to profane the sacralizations embedded in leadership thinking. One example of this, which guides us throughout the article, is the novel A Wild Sheep Chase, by the Japanese author Haruki Murakami. By means of a thematic reading of the novel, we discuss how it contributes to profaning particular notions of sacrifice and the sacred in leadership thinking. In the novel, self-sacrifice does not function as a way of establishing a leadership position, but as a way to avoid the dangers associated with leadership, and possibly redeem humans from their current collective urge to become leaders. Inspired by Murakami's fictional example, we call organization scholars to engage in profanation of leadership studies and, in doing so, open new vistas for leadership theory and practice. © The Author(s) 2012
How non-native English-speaking staff are evaluated in linguistically diverse organizations: A sociolinguistic perspective
The aim of this paper is to examine the effects of evaluations of non-native speaking staff?s spoken English in international business settings. We adopt a sociolinguistic perspective on power and inequalities in linguistically diverse organizations in an Anglophone environment. The interpretive qualitative study draws on 54 interviews with non-native English-speaking staff in 19 UK business schools. We analyze, along the dimensions of status, solidarity and dynamism, the ways in which non-native speakers, on the basis of their spoken English, are evaluated by themselves and by listeners. We show how such evaluations refer to issues beyond the speaker?s linguistic fluency, and have consequences for her or his actions. The study contributes to the literature on language and power in international business through offering fine-grained insights into and elucidating how the interconnected evaluative processes impact the formation and perpetuation of organizational power relations and inequalities. It also puts forward implications for managing the officially monolingual, yet linguistically diverse organizations
Moving Beyond Mimicry: Developing Hybrid Spaces in Indian Business Schools
This article analyses the identity work of Indian management educators and scholars as they seek to establish, maintain and revise a sense of self in the context of business school globalization. We show how globalization, combined with the historical legacy of colonialism, renders Indian scholars precarious in their interactions with Western business schools. Based on a qualitative interview study, we explore how Indian business school scholars perform their identities in the context of neo-colonial relations, which are characterised by the dominance of English language and a pressure to conform to research norms set by globally-ranked journals. Drawing on postcolonial theory, our argument focuses on mimicry as a distinctive form of identity work that involves maintaining difference between Western and non-Western identities by 'Othering' Indian scholars, while simultaneously seeking to transform them. We draw attention to ambivalence within participants' accounts, which we suggest arises because the authority of Western scholarship relies on maintaining non-Western scholars in a position of alterity or 'not quite-ness'. We suggest that hybridity offers an opportunity to disrupt and question current practices of business school globalization and facilitate scholarly engagement that reflects more diverse philosophical positions and worldviews
Language in international business: a review and agenda for future research
A fast growing number of studies demonstrates that language diversity influences almost all management decisions in modern multinational corporations. Whereas no doubt remains about the practical importance of language, the empirical investigation and theoretical conceptualization of its complex and multifaceted effects still presents a substantial challenge. To summarize and evaluate the current state of the literature in a coherent picture informing future research, we systematically review 264 articles on language in international business.
We scrutinize the geographic distributions of data, evaluate the field’s achievements to date in terms of theories and methodologies, and summarize core findings by individual, group, firm, and country levels of analysis. For each of these dimensions, we then put forward a future research agenda. We encourage scholars to transcend disciplinary boundaries and to draw on, integrate, and test a variety of theories from disciplines such as psychology, linguistics, and neuroscience to gain a more profound understanding of language in international business. We advocate more multi-level studies and cross-national research collaborations and suggest greater attention to potential new data sources and means of analysis
30 years of collaboration
We highlight some of the most important cornerstones of the long standing and very fruitful collaboration of the Austrian Diophantine Number Theory research group and the Number Theory and Cryptography School of Debrecen. However, we do not plan to be complete in any sense but give some interesting data and selected results that we find particularly nice. At the end we focus on two topics in more details, namely a problem that origins from a conjecture of Rényi and Erdős (on the number of terms of the square of a polynomial) and another one that origins from a question of Zelinsky (on the unit sum number problem). Narrative, metaphor and the subjective understanding of identity transition

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.This paper examines the relevance of employing an oral history method and narrative interview techniques for business historians. We explore the use of oral history interviews as a means of capturing the expression of subjective experience in narrative and metaphor. We do so by analysing interviews concerning the transition of East German identities following reunification with West Germany. Self-expression emerges as critical to the vital identity work required for social integration following transformation, metaphor providing a means of articulating deep-rooted patterns of thought. We demonstrate that employing an oral history methodology can benefit business historians by affording access to the human dimension of a research project, unlocking the subjective understanding of experience by low-power actors among the non-hegemonic classes. Hence, employing an oral history methodology provides a valuable means of countering narrative imperialism, exemplified here by the dominant West German success story grounded in Western-style individual freedom
Częściowa charakterystyka izolatu wirusa mozaiki ogórka (CMV) z roślin Lonicera caprifolium L.
Plants of honeysuckle (Lonicera caprifolium L.) from commercial nursery, showing stunted growth and severe leaf and flower malformation were found to be naturally infected with Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV). The virus was identified on the basis of its host range and in vitro and serological properties. It was mechanically transmitted onto therteen herbaceous test plants and induced local or local and systemic symptoms. The isolated virus had a TIP of 65–70°C, a LIV of 4–5 h and DEP of 10⁻⁴–10⁻⁵. It reacted positively in DAS-ELISA with CMV-ToRS (II) commercial antibodies but not with antibodies against CMV-DTL (I). Rabbit antiserum was produced, and it showed the titre at least 128 000 in F(ab’)₂ -ELISA with homologous isolate, as well as with isolate CMV-M belonging to serogroup DTL.Stwierdzono obecność wirusa mozaiki ogórka (CMV) w naturalnie porażonych roślinach wiciokrzewu (Lonicera caprifolium L.) wykazujących zahamowanie wzrostu oraz silną deformację liści i kwiatów. Wirusa zidentyfikowano na podstawie reakcji testowych roślin zielnych, jego właściwości w warunkach in vitro oraz właściwości serologicznych. Wirusa przeniesiono w sposób mechaniczny na trzynaście gatunków roślin zielnych, u których wywoływał objawy lokalne lub lokalne i systemiczne. TIP wirusa określono na 65-70º C, LIV 4-5 godzin a DEP 10⁻⁴ do 10⁻⁵. W teście DAS-ELISA wirus reagował pozytywnie z przeciwciałami na CMV-ToRS (II), a nie reagował z przeciwciałami na CMV- DTL (I). Przygotowano surowicę króliczą, której miano w teście F(ab')₂ ELISA wynosiło co najmniej 128 000, zarówno w reakcji z izolatem homologicznym jak i z izolatem M, należącym do serogrupy DTL
