    Quantum entanglement distribution with 810 nm photons through telecom fibers

    We demonstrate the distribution of polarization entangled photons of wavelength 810 nm through standard telecom fibers. This technique allows quantum communication protocols to be performed over established fiber infrastructure, and makes use of the smaller and better performing setups available around 800 nm, as compared to those which use telecom wavelengths around 1550 nm. We examine the excitation and subsequent quenching of higher-order spatial modes in telecom fibers up to 6 km in length, and perform a distribution of high quality entanglement (visibility 95.6%). Finally, we demonstrate quantum key distribution using entangled 810 nm photons over a 4.4 km long installed telecom fiber link.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, 1 tabl

    Rigor and reproducibility in genetic research on eating disorders

    Objective: We explored both within-method and between-method rigor and reproducibility in the field of eating disorders genetics. Method: We present critical evaluation and commentary on component methods of genetic research (family studies, twin studies, molecular genetic studies) and discuss both successful and unsuccessful efforts in the field. Results: Eating disorders genetics has had a number of robust results that converge across component methodologies. Familial aggregation of eating disorders, twin-based heritability estimates of eating disorders, and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) all point toward a substantial role for genetics in eating disorders etiology and support the premise that genes do not act alone. Candidate gene and linkage studies have been less informative historically. Discussion: The eating disorders field has entered the GWAS era with studies of anorexia nervosa. Continued growth of sample sizes is essential for rigorous discovery of actionable variation. Molecular genetic studies of bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and other eating disorders are virtually nonexistent and lag seriously behind other major psychiatric disorders. Expanded efforts are necessary to reveal the fundamental biology of eating disorders, inform clinical practice, and deliver new therapeutic targets

    Universal conductance enhancement and reduction of the two-orbital Kondo effect

    We investigate theoretically the linear and nonlinear conductance through a nanostructure with two-fold degenerate single levels, corresponding to the transport through nanostructures such as a carbon nanotube, or double dot systems with capacitive interaction. It is shown that the presence of the interaction asymmetry between orbits/dots affects significantly the profile of the linear conductance at finite temperature, and, of the nonlinear conductance, particularly around half-filling, where the two-particle Kondo effect occurs. Within the range of experimentally feasible parameters, the SU(4) universal behavior is suggested, and comparison with relevant experiments is made.Comment: 10 pages, 16 figure

    Associations between Blood Metabolic Profile at 7 Years Old and Eating Disorders in Adolescence: Findings from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children

    Eating disorders are severe illnesses characterized by both psychiatric and metabolic factors. We explored the prospective role of metabolic risk in eating disorders in a UK cohort (n = 2929 participants), measuring 158 metabolic traits in non-fasting EDTA-plasma by nuclear magnetic resonance. We associated metabolic markers at 7 years (exposure) with risk for anorexia nervosa and binge-eating disorder (outcomes) at 14, 16, and 18 years using logistic regression adjusted for maternal education, child's sex, age, body mass index, and calorie intake at 7 years. Elevated very low-density lipoproteins, triglycerides, apolipoprotein-B/A, and monounsaturated fatty acids ratio were associated with lower odds of anorexia nervosa at age 18, while elevated high-density lipoproteins, docosahexaenoic acid and polyunsaturated fatty acids ratio, and fatty acid unsaturation were associated with higher risk for anorexia nervosa at 18 years. Elevated linoleic acid and n-6 fatty acid ratios were associated with lower odds of binge-eating disorder at 16 years, while elevated saturated fatty acid ratio was associated with higher odds of binge-eating disorder. Most associations had large confidence intervals and showed, for anorexia nervosa, different directions across time points. Overall, our results show some evidence for a role of metabolic factors in eating disorders development in adolescence

    Identifying research priorities for the study of atypical anorexia nervosa: A Delphi study

    Objective: Individuals meeting all criteria for anorexia nervosa (AN) except that weight falls within or above the normal range despite significant weight loss are categorized as having atypical AN (AAN). Existing research has provided mixed evidence concerning the diagnostic demarcation of AN and AAN. The aim of the present study was to identify research priorities for furthering the understanding of AN and AAN as diagnostic entities. Method: Employing the Delphi methodology, experts in the field were invited to suggest research questions that need to be explored in the demarcation of AN from AAN. This yielded 24 research areas, that were presented in subsequent rounds where panelists were asked to prioritize areas of primary interest. Results: Fifty-three panelists completed all three Delphi rounds. Consensus was only reached on three items considered to be of primary interest: medical, neurobiological, and neurological factors; epidemiology and natural course; and treatment response in AAN compared to AN. In contrast, questions of premorbid weight and determining the need for and nature of a body mass index cutoff differentiating between AAN and AN were seen as being of low priority. Discussion: These findings reveal a relatively low degree of consensus on the demarcation of AN from AAN in the field of eating disorders. A reason could be that the definition and use of the AAN category vary in research and clinical practice. In order to achieve further diagnostic clarity, research on the demarcation of AAN and AN should focus on the identified prioritized research areas

    Prolonged constipation and diarrhea in childhood and disordered eating in adolescence

    Objectives: Gastrointestinal problems are common in all eating disorders; however, the extent to which these problems predate the onset of eating disorders is not clear. We explored longitudinal associations between childhood gastrointestinal problems and adolescent disordered eating, and assessed whether observed associations are potentially causal or due to familial confounding factors. Methods: Data from a population-based Swedish twin sample were used to investigate associations between parent- and self-reported protracted constipation and diarrhea in childhood and adolescence, and later disordered eating, measured by the Eating Disorders Inventory-2 (EDI). Linear regression models were used to investigate the associations. Possible familial confounding was explored by using a within-twin pair analysis. Results: We found that those who reported a history of constipation at age 15 scored 5.55 and 5.04 points higher, respectively, on the EDI total score at age 15 and 18, compared with those without constipation. Those reporting a history of diarrhea at age 15 scored 5.15 points higher, and the group reporting both problems scored 9.52 points higher on the EDI total score at age 15 than those reporting no problems. We observed that the association between constipation and disordered eating was attenuated in the within-twin pair analysis, but remained positive. Conclusions: Gastrointestinal problems in childhood and adolescence are significantly associated with disordered eating. Associations were partly due to familial confounding, but might also be consistent with a causal interpretation. Clinicians should be aware of the increased risk of disordered eating when following children and adolescents who present with gastrointestinal problems

    Disentangling independent and mediated causal relationships between blood metabolites, cognitive factors, and Alzheimer’s Disease

    Background: Education and cognition demonstrate consistent inverse associations with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The biological underpinnings, however, remain unclear. Blood metabolites reflect the end point of biological processes and are accessible and malleable. Identifying metabolites with etiological relevance to AD and disentangling how these relate to cognitive factors along the AD causal pathway could, therefore, offer unique insights into underlying causal mechanisms. // Methods: Using data from the largest metabolomics genome-wide association study (N ≈ 24,925) and three independent AD cohorts (N = 4725), cross-trait polygenic scores were generated and meta-analyzed. Metabolites genetically associated with AD were taken forward for causal analyses. Bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization interrogated univariable causal relationships between 1) metabolites and AD; 2) education and cognition; 3) metabolites, education, and cognition; and 4) education, cognition, and AD. Mediating relationships were computed using multivariable Mendelian randomization. // Results: Thirty-four metabolites were genetically associated with AD at p < .05. Of these, glutamine and free cholesterol in extra-large high-density lipoproteins demonstrated a protective causal effect (glutamine: 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.70 to 0.92; free cholesterol in extra-large high-density lipoproteins: 95% CI, 0.75 to 0.92). An AD-protective effect was also observed for education (95% CI, 0.61 to 0.85) and cognition (95% CI, 0.60 to 0.89), with bidirectional mediation evident. Cognition as a mediator of the education-AD relationship was stronger than vice versa, however. No evidence of mediation via any metabolite was found. // Conclusions: Glutamine and free cholesterol in extra-large high-density lipoproteins show protective causal effects on AD. Education and cognition also demonstrate protection, though education’s effect is almost entirely mediated by cognition. These insights provide key pieces of the AD causal puzzle, important for informing future multimodal work and progressing toward effective intervention strategies

    Long-distance practical quantum key distribution by entanglement swapping

    We develop a model for practical, entanglement-based long-distance quantum key distribution employing entanglement swapping as a key building block. Relying only on existing off-the-shelf technology, we show how to optimize resources so as to maximize secret key distribution rates. The tools comprise lossy transmission links, such as telecom optical fibers or free space, parametric down-conversion sources of entangled photon pairs, and threshold detectors that are inefficient and have dark counts. Our analysis provides the optimal trade-off between detector efficiency and dark counts, which are usually competing, as well as the optimal source brightness that maximizes the secret key rate for specified distances (i.e. loss) between sender and receiver.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures; published in Optics Expres

    High-fidelity transmission of entanglement over a high-loss freespace channel

    Quantum entanglement enables tasks not possible in classical physics. Many quantum communication protocols require the distribution of entangled states between distant parties. Here we experimentally demonstrate the successful transmission of an entangled photon pair over a 144 km free-space link. The received entangled states have excellent, noise-limited fidelity, even though they are exposed to extreme attenuation dominated by turbulent atmospheric effects. The total channel loss of 64 dB corresponds to the estimated attenuation regime for a two-photon satellite quantum communication scenario. We confirm that the received two-photon states are still highly entangled by violating the CHSH inequality by more than 5 standard deviations. From a fundamental point of view, our results show that the photons are virtually not subject to decoherence during their 0.5 ms long flight through air, which is encouraging for future world-wide quantum communication scenarios.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, replaced paper with published version, added journal referenc

    Direct generation of photon triplets using cascaded photon-pair sources

    Non-classical states of light, such as entangled photon pairs and number states, are essential for fundamental tests of quantum mechanics and optical quantum technologies. The most widespread technique for creating these quantum resources is the spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) of laser light into photon pairs. Conservation of energy and momentum in this process, known as phase-matching, gives rise to strong correlations which are used to produce two-photon entanglement in various degrees of freedom. It has been a longstanding goal of the quantum optics community to realise a source that can produce analogous correlations in photon triplets, but of the many approaches considered, none have been technically feasible. In this paper we report the observation of photon triplets generated by cascaded down-conversion. Here each triplet originates from a single pump photon, and therefore quantum correlations will extend over all three photons in a way not achievable with independently created photon pairs. We expect our photon-triplet source to open up new avenues of quantum optics and become an important tool in quantum technologies. Our source will allow experimental interrogation of novel quantum correlations, the post-selection free generation of tripartite entanglement without post- selection and the generation of heralded entangled-photon pairs suitable for linear optical quantum computing. Two of the triplet photons have a wavelength matched for optimal transmission in optical fibres, ideally suited for three-party quantum communication. Furthermore, our results open interesting regimes of non-linear optics, as we observe spontaneous down-conversion pumped by single photons, an interaction also highly relevant to optical quantum computing.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table; accepted by Natur
