    X-Ray Scattering at FeCo(001) Surfaces and the Crossover between Ordinary and Normal Transitions

    In a recent experiment by Krimmel et al. [PRL 78, 3880 (1997)], the critical behavior of FeCo near a (001) surface was studied by x-ray scattering. Here the experimental data are reanalyzed, taking into account recent theoretical results on order-parameter profiles in the crossover regime between ordinary and normal transitions.     Psychosocial outcomes of an inclusive adapted sport and adventurous training course for military personnel.

    PURPOSE: To explore the psychosocial outcomes of an inclusive adapted sport and adventurous training course that aims to support the rehabilitation and personal development of military personnel who have sustained physical and/or psychological disability. METHOD: Narrative life story interviews were conducted with 11 men aged 20-43 taking part in one of the 5-day courses. A thematic narrative analysis was conducted, focusing on accounts that provided insights into personally meaningful psychosocial outcomes of the course. FINDINGS: We identified six themes, falling into two distinct clusters. "Bringing me back to myself" was achieved through the themes of (1) returning to activity, (2) rediscovering a sense of purpose, and (3) reconnecting to others. "New rooms to explore" was realised through (4) experiencing new activities, (5) being valued/respected/cared for and (6) being inspired by other people. CONCLUSION: Involvement in the course stimulated a balance of present- and future-oriented psychosocial outcomes through which participants both recreated aspects of themselves that had been lost through injury/trauma and moved forward with their lives as a result of new horizons of possibility. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: This 5-day inclusive adapted sport and adventurous training course offered meaningful psychosocial outcomes among military personnel who had experienced physical and/or psychological disability. The course helped participants recover aspects of their previous life and self through becoming physically active again, rediscovering a sense of purpose and reconnecting to others. Participants describe a broadening of life horizons as a result of the course, through new activities, being valued/respected/cared for, and being inspired by other people

    Thermal Impact on Spiking Properties in Hodgkin-Huxley Neuron with Synaptic Stimulus

    The effect of environmental temperature on neuronal spiking behaviors is investigated by numerically simulating the temperature dependence of spiking threshold of the Hodgkin-Huxley neuron subject to synaptic stimulus. We find that the spiking threshold exhibits a global minimum in a "comfortable temperature" range where spike initiation needs weakest synaptic strength, indicating the occurrence of optimal use of synaptic transmission in neural system. We further explore the biophysical origin of this phenomenon in ion channel gating kinetics and also discuss its possible biological relevance in information processing in neural systems.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

We present a service-based infrastructure for distributed retrieval which blends middleware facilities and a design framework to ‘lift’ the resource sharing approach and the computational services of a European Grid platform into the domain of e-Science applications.     We investigate Aharonov-Bohm-type oscillations of the thermopower of a quantum dot embedded in a ring for the case when the interaction between electrons can be neglected. The thermopower is shown to be strongly flux dependent, and typically the amplitude of oscillations exceeds the background value. It is also shown to be essentially dependent on the phase of the scattering matrix which is determined by the experimental geometry and is not known in the given experiment.     The Intrinsic Quantum Excitations of Low Temperature Glasses

    Several puzzling regularities concerning the low temperature excitations of glasses are quantitatively explained by quantizing domain wall motions of the random first order glass transition theory. The density of excitations agrees with experiment and scales with the size of a dynamically coherent region at TgT_g, being about 200 molecules. The phonon coupling depends on the Lindemann ratio for vitrification yielding the observed universal relation l/λ≃150l/\lambda \simeq 150 between phonon wavelength λ\lambda and mean free path ll. Multilevel behavior is predicted to occur in the temperature range of the thermal conductivity plateau.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to PR

    The deconfinement transition of finite density QCD with heavy quarks from strong coupling series

    Starting from Wilson's action, we calculate strong coupling series for the Polyakov loop susceptibility in lattice gauge theories for various small N_\tau in the thermodynamic limit. Analysing the series with Pad\'e approximants, we estimate critical couplings and exponents for the deconfinement phase transition. For SU(2) pure gauge theory our results agree with those from Monte-Carlo simulations within errors, which for the coarser N_\tau=1,2 lattices are at the percent level. For QCD we include dynamical fermions via a hopping parameter expansion. On a N_\tau=1 lattice with N_f=1,2,3, we locate the second order critical point where the deconfinement transition turns into a crossover. We furthermore determine the behaviour of the critical parameters with finite chemical potential and find the first order region to shrink with growing \mu. Our series moreover correctly reflects the known Z(N) transition at imaginary chemical potential.Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, typos corrected, version published in JHE

    Quantum mechanics is a fundamentally probabilistic theory (at least so far as the empirical predictions are concerned). It follows that, if one wants to properly understand quantum mechanics, it is essential to clearly understand the meaning of probability statements. The interpretation of probability has excited nearly as much philosophical controversy as the interpretation of quantum mechanics. 20th century physicists have mostly adopted a frequentist conception. In this paper it is argued that we ought, instead, to adopt a logical or Bayesian conception. The paper includes a comparison of the orthodox and Bayesian theories of statistical inference.
