Performance of a model cascade thrust reverser for short-haul applications
Aerodynamic and acoustic characteristics are presented for a cowlmounted, model cascade thrust reverser suitable for short-haul aircraft. Thrust reverser efficiency and the influence on fan performance were determined from isolated fan-driven models under static and forward velocity conditions. Cascade reverser noise characteristics were determined statically in an isolated pipe-flow test, while aerodynamic installation effects were determined with a wind-tunnel, fan-powered airplane model. Application of test results to short-haul aircraft calculations demonstrated that such a cascade thrust reverser may be able to meet both the performance and noise requirements for short-haul aircraft operation. However, aircraft installation effects can be quite significant
Anisotropy in nanocellular polymers promoted by the addition of needle‐like sepiolites
This work presents a new strategy for obtaining nanocellular materials with high anisotropy ratios by means of the addition of needle‐like nanoparticles. Nanocellular polymers are of great interest due to their outstanding properties, whereas anisotropic structures allow the realization of improved thermal and mechanical properties in certain directions. Nanocomposites based on poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) with nanometric sepiolites are generated by extrusion. From the extruded filaments, cellular materials are produced using a two‐step gas dissolution foaming method. The effect of adding various types and contents of sepiolites is investigated. As a result of the extrusion process, the needle‐like sepiolites are aligned in the machine direction in the solid nanocomposites. Regarding the cellular materials, the addition of sepiolites allows one to obtain anisotropic nanocellular polymers with cell sizes of 150 to 420 nm and cell nucleation densities of 1013–1014 nuclei cm−3 and presenting anisotropy ratios ranging from 1.38 to 2.15, the extrusion direction being the direction of the anisotropy. To explain the appearance of anisotropy, a mechanism based on cell coalescence is proposed and discussed. In addition, it is shown that it is possible to control the anisotropy ratio of the PMMA/sepiolite nanocellular polymers by changing the amount of well‐dispersed sepiolites in the solid nanocomposites
Nongauge bright soliton of the nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation and a family of generalized NLS equations
We present an approach to the bright soliton solution of the NLS equation
from the standpoint of introducing a constant potential term in the equation.
We discuss a `nongauge' bright soliton for which both the envelope and the
phase depend only on the traveling variable. We also construct a family of
generalized NLS equations with solitonic sech^p solutions in the traveling
variable and find an exact equivalence with other nonlinear equations, such as
the Korteveg-de Vries and Benjamin-Bona-Mahony equations when p=2Comment: ~4 pages, 3 figures, 16 references, published versio
Cross-Border Investment, Conflict of Laws, and the Privatization of Securities Law
The rapid acceleration of transnational investing is occurring in an environment in which emerging markets, and foreign interest in these markets, are exploding. The issues involved with cross-border investment, conflict of laws and the privatization of securities law are examined
Parallel ion strings in linear multipole traps
Additional radio-frequency (rf) potentials applied to linear multipole traps
create extra field nodes in the radial plane which allow one to confine single
ions, or strings of ions, in totally rf field-free regions. The number of nodes
depends on the order of the applied multipole potentials and their relative
distance can be easily tuned by the amplitude variation of the applied
voltages. Simulations using molecular dynamics show that strings of ions can be
laser cooled down to the Doppler limit in all directions of space. Once cooled,
organized systems can be moved with very limited heating, even if the cooling
process is turned off
The INTEGRAL-OMC Scientific Archive
The Optical Monitoring Camera (OMC) on-board the INTEGRAL satellite has, as
one of its scientific goals, the observation of a large number of variable
sources previously selected. After almost 6 years of operations, OMC has
monitored more than 100 000 sources of scientific interest. In this
contribution we present the OMC Scientific Archive
(http://sdc.laeff.inta.es/omc/) which has been developed to provide the
astronomical community with a quick access to the light curves generated by
this instrument. We describe the main characteristics of this archive, as well
as important aspects for the users: object types, temporal sampling of light
curves and photometric accuracy.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures. "Highlights of Spanish Astrophysics V"

Quantum-enhanced gyroscopy with rotating anisotropic Bose–Einstein condensates
High-precision gyroscopes are a key component of inertial navigation systems. By considering matter wave gyroscopes that make use of entanglement it should be possible to gain some advantages in terms of sensitivity, size, and resources used over unentangled optical systems. In this paper we consider the details of such a quantum-enhanced atom interferometry scheme based on atoms trapped in a carefully-chosen rotating trap. We consider all the steps: entanglement generation, phase imprinting, and read-out of the signal and show that quantum enhancement should be possible in principle. While the improvement in performance over equivalent unentangled schemes is small, our feasibility study opens the door to further developments and improvements

Realistic Gluino Axion Model Consistent with Supersymmetry Breaking at the TeV Scale
The recently proposed model of using the dynamical phase of the gluino to
solve the strong CP problem is shown to admit a specific realization in terms
of fundamental singlet superfields, such that the breaking of supersymmetry
occurs only at the TeV scale, despite the large axion scale of 10^{9} to
10^{12} GeV. Phenomenological implications are discussed.Comment: 12 pp, 2 fig
