Burnout, Stress, and Direct Student Services Among School Counselors
The burnout and stress experienced by school counselors is likely to have a negative influence on the services they provide to students, but there is little research exploring the relationship among these variables. Therefore, we report findings from our study that examined the relationship between practicing school counselors’ (N = 926) reported levels of burnout, perceived stress and their facilitation of direct student services. The findings indicated that school counselor participants’ burnout had a negative contribution to the direct student services they facilitated. In addition, school counselors’ perceived stress demonstrated a statistically significant correlation with burnout but did not contribute to their facilitation of direct student services. We believe these findings bring attention to school counselors’ need to assess and manage their stress and burnout that if left unchecked may lead to fewer services for students. We recommend that future research further explore the relationship between stress, burnout and programmatic service delivery to support and expand upon the findings in this investigation
Exploring Emotional Intelligence Among Master\u27s-Level Counseling Trainees
The authors explored the relationship between counseling trainees\u27 emotional intelligence (EI), empathy, stress, distress, and demographics. Results indicated that higher levels of EI were associated with lower stress and distress, higher affective and cognitive empathy, and age. These findings suggest curricular integration of EI and potential utility of EI measures to evaluate students\u27 progress throughout the program
Localisation of a Reactive Transport Zone in a Saturated Karstic Conduit Deduced from Natural and Artificial Tracer Tests
International audienceFor groundwater resources managers, flow modeling is a useful tool to investigate sustainable scenarios of water use. However, in karstic aquifers, the quality of scenarios is limited by the difficulties of locating and describing the position, geometry and possible time evolution of conduits. The location of conduits in the karstic aquifer of the "Val d'Orléans" (France) were defined using 200 boreholes, surface collapses and 24 artificial tracer tests, which facilitated the development of a simplified conceptual model of flow in the saturated conduits and the surrounding rocks. 68 logs present voids > 50 cm and locate a highly porous zone around 80 m a.s.l. with voids that average 3.5 meter in diameter. In this saturated conduit, 1D quantitative interpretation of artificial tracer tests validate the proposed conceptual model of a saturated conduit under pressure, with an efficient section about 10 m2 an input flow about 3.1 m3/s with 2.9 m3/s flowing from the conduit toward the surrounding rock before arriving at the Loiret Spring. The conceptual model of flow and the previous water chemical analysis show that the transported elements in the groundwater react and dissolve carbonate rocks, mainly inside the conduit, and that this may increase the diameter of the conduit zone by an estimated 40 cm in 100 year
Stigma, Help Seeking, and Substance Use
Researchers used path analysis to examine self-stigma, help seeking, and alcohol and other drug (AOD) use in a community sample of individuals (N = 406) recruited through the crowdsourcing platform MTurk. Self-stigma of help seeking contributed to AOD use and was mediated by help-seeking attitudes. We discuss the implications for advocacy and stigma reduction in substance use treatment. Counselors and counselor educators can implement and advocate for interventions and training that increase positive attitudes toward seeking help, such as providing appropriate training with supervisees and counselors-in-training, providing clients and the community with mental health literacy, and engaging in more advocacy. Moreover, they can challenge thoughts of seeking help as weakness, normalize seeking psychological help, and discuss the benefits of counseling and therapy to address the development and effects of self-stigma of help seeking for individuals with substance use issues
Ticking for Metabolic Health:The Skeletal-Muscle Clocks
To be prepared for alternating metabolic demands occurring over the 24-hour day, the body preserves information on time in skeletal muscle, and all cells, through a circadian clock mechanism. Skeletal muscle can be considered the largest collection of peripheral clocks in the body with a major contribution to whole body energy metabolism. Comparison of circadian clock gene expression between skeletal muscle of nocturnal rodents and diurnal humans reveals very common patterns based on rest/active cycles rather than light/dark cycles. Rodent studies in which the circadian clock is disrupted in skeletal muscle demonstrate impaired glucose handling and insulin resistance. Experimental circadian misalignment in humans modifies the skeletal muscle clocks and leads to disturbed energy metabolism and insulin resistance. Preclinical studies have revealed that timing of exercise over the day can influence the beneficial effects of exercise on skeletal muscle metabolism and studies suggest similar applicability in humans. Current strategies to improve metabolic health, e.g. exercise, should be reinvestigated in their capability to modify the skeletal muscle clocks by taking timing of the intervention into account
X-Ray, Ultraviolet, and Visible Light Induced Energy Level Realignment
The article processing charge was funded by the Open Access Publication Fund of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The electronic properties of metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are crucial for achieving the full potential of MHPs-based optoelectronic devices, and they are extensively studied by photoelectron spectroscopy (PES). However, there are numerous complexities during PES measurements, which can result in inconsistent experimental data or even misinterpretation of results. Here, it is demonstrated that in the presence of charge selective junctions with MHPs, significant electronic energy level realignment can occur during PES measurements due to the sample excitation with high-energy photons used in PES, amounting up to over 0.8 eV in the present case. This is caused by unbalanced charge carrier accumulation within the perovskite due to the charge-selective interface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy further reveals that photoexcitation due to bremsstrahlung, as produced in commonly employed twin-anode lab-sources, can readily produce sizable photoinduced shifts of core levels of MHPs films, whereas monochromatized X-ray lab-sources (irradiation flux reduced by >50 times by eliminating the bremsstrahlung) induce negligible shifts within the range of presently applied anode powers. The data and measurement conditions presented here are intended to enable others to obtain reliable MHP electronic property information from PES measurements.Peer Reviewe
Common activation of canonical Wnt signaling in pancreatic adenocarcinoma.
Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is an extremely aggressive malignancy, which carries a dismal prognosis. Activating mutations of the Kras gene are common to the vast majority of human PDA. In addition, recent studies have demonstrated that embryonic signaling pathway such as Hedgehog and Notch are inappropriately upregulated in this disease. The role of another embryonic signaling pathway, namely the canonical Wnt cascade, is still controversial. Here, we use gene array analysis as a platform to demonstrate general activation of the canonical arm of the Wnt pathway in human PDA. Furthermore, we provide evidence for Wnt activation in mouse models of pancreatic cancer. Our results also indicate that Wnt signaling might be activated downstream of Hedgehog signaling, which is an early event in PDA evolution. Wnt inhibition blocked proliferation and induced apoptosis of cultured adenocarcinoma cells, thereby providing evidence to support the development of novel therapeutical strategies for Wnt inhibition in pancreatic adenocarcinoma
