We present a novel system capable of capturing high dynamic range (HDR) Light Probes at video speed. Each Light Probe frame is built from an individual full set of exposures, all of which are captured within the frame time. The exposures are processed and assembled into a mantissa-exponent representation image within the camera unit before output, and then streamed to a standard PC. As an example, the system is capable of capturing Light Probe Images with a resolution of 512x512 pixels using a set of 10 exposures covering 15 f-stops at a frame rate of up to 25 final HDR frames per second. The system is built around commercial special-purpose camera hardware with on-chip programmable image processing logic and tightly integrated frame buffer memory, and the algorithm is implemented as custom downloadable microcode software

Heterogeneity Mapping of Protein Expression in Tumors using Quantitative Immunofluorescence

    Get PDF
Morphologic heterogeneity within an individual tumor is well-recognized by histopathologists in surgical practice. While this often takes the form of areas of distinct differentiation into recognized histological subtypes, or different pathological grade, often there are more subtle differences in phenotype which defy accurate classification (Figure 1). Ultimately, since morphology is dictated by the underlying molecular phenotype, areas with visible differences are likely to be accompanied by differences in the expression of proteins which orchestrate cellular function and behavior, and therefore, appearance. The significance of visible and invisible (molecular) heterogeneity for prognosis is unknown, but recent evidence suggests that, at least at the genetic level, heterogeneity exists in the primary tumor1,2, and some of these sub-clones give rise to metastatic (and therefore lethal) disease

    Efficient computational noise in GLSL

    Get PDF
We present GLSL implementations of Perlin noise and Perlin simplex noise that run fast enough for practical consideration on current generation GPU hardware. The key benefits are that the functions are purely computational, i.e. they use neither textures nor lookup tables, and that they are implemented in GLSL version 1.20, which means they are compatible with all current GLSL-capable platforms, including OpenGL ES 2.0 and WebGL 1.0. Their performance is on par with previously presented GPU implementations of noise, they are very convenient to use, and they scale well with increasing parallelism in present and upcoming GPU architectures

Influence of young adult cognitive ability and additional education on later-life cognition

How and when education improves cognitive capacity is an issue of profound societal importance. Education and later-life education-related factors, such as occupational complexity and engagement in cognitive-intellectual activities, are frequently considered indices of cognitive reserve, but whether their effects are truly causal remains unclear. In this study, after accounting for general cognitive ability (GCA) at an average age of 20 y, additional education, occupational complexity, or engagement in cognitive-intellectual activities accounted for little variance in late midlife cognitive functioning in men age 56-66 (n = 1009). Age 20 GCA accounted for 40% of variance in the same measure in late midlife and approximately 10% of variance in each of seven cognitive domains. The other factors each accounted for <1% of the variance in cognitive outcomes. The impact of these other factors likely reflects reverse causation-namely, downstream effects of early adult GCA. Supporting that idea, age 20 GCA, but not education, was associated with late midlife cortical surface area (n = 367). In our view, the most parsimonious explanation of our results, a meta-analysis of the impact of education, and epidemiologic studies of the Flynn effect is that intellectual capacity gains due to education plateau in late adolescence/early adulthood. Longitudinal studies with multiple cognitive assessments before completion of education would be needed to confirm this speculation. If cognitive gains reach an asymptote by early adulthood, then strengthening cognitive reserve and reducing later-life cognitive decline and dementia risk may really begin with improving educational quality and access in childhood and adolescence.Peer reviewe

Genetic underpinnings of increased BMI and its association with late midlife cognitive abilities

OBJECTIVES: First, we test for differences in various cognitive abilities across trajectories of body mass index (BMI) over the later life course. Second, we examine whether genetic risk factors for unhealthy BMIs-assessed via polygenic risk scores (PRS)-predict cognitive abilities in late-life. METHODS: The study used a longitudinal sample of Vietnam veteran males to explore the associations between BMI trajectories, measured across four time points, and later cognitive abilities. The sample of 977 individuals was drawn from the Vietnam Era Twin Study of Aging. Cognitive abilities evaluated included executive function, abstract reasoning, episodic memory, processing speed, verbal fluency, and visual spatial ability. Multilevel linear regression models were used to estimate the associations between BMI trajectories and cognitive abilities. Then, BMI PRS was added to the models to evaluate polygenic associations with cognitive abilities. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in cognitive ability between any of the BMI trajectory groups. There was a significant inverse relationship between BMI-PRS and several cognitive ability measures. DISCUSSION: While no associations emerged for BMI trajectories and cognitive abilities at the phenotypic levels, BMI PRS measures did correlate with key cognitive domains. Our results suggest possible polygenic linkages cutting across key components of the central and peripheral nervous system.Published versio

Feline ischemic encephalopathy and Cuterebra larva myiasis in a domestic shorthair cat

Our patient, an approximately 3 year old castrated male domestic shorthair cat presented to the Emergency Service at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals on 08/08/2011 with a 5 day history of neurologic signs. His owners first noted that he was bumping into things. He was taken to their local veterinarian who suspected an inner ear infection and prescribed prednisone (5mg once daily for 3 days then 5mg once every other day for three days) and valacyclovir (500mg every 8 hours) and recommended cage rest. After returning home the owners believed that he was not able to see out of his left eye (this was later revealed to be a deficit in the left visual hemisphere), his left hindlimb was in extension with his left forelimb in flexion and he was not responding to touch sensation on the left half of his body. His owners believe he responded to the medications as his gait and limb carriage improved but he still displayed concerning neurologic signs. He had no history of vomiting or diarrhea, and his urination habits were normal. The owners had not seen him drink since 08/05/2011 and felt his appetite was diminished, although he was still eating. Our patient is an indoor/outdoor cat that was up to date on vaccines. He was FeLV/FIV negative when tested 2 years ago. He is otherwise healthy with no other relevant medical problems except for presumptive feline asthma which he has been treated for with steroids twice, once in 12/2010 and again in 06/2011

    Egoism is an ethical ought

    No full text
honors thesisCollege of HumanitiesPhilosophyIt is the intent of this paper to do three things. Initially I will show that W. D. Falk's article I "Morality I Self and Others" argues for two levels of moral oughtness, the second level of which can illuminate the traditional position of ethical egoism and give aid in resolving some of the problems associated with that theory. I will then illustrate the traditional position of the ethical egoism and examine some of the classical criticisms against it. The final section of this paper will offer a reformatory proposal that will try to show egoism to be a genuine moral theory without changing it into another ethical system
