    Optimization of water distribution networks using a deterministic approach

    Water distribution networks (WDNs) are the main component of industrial and urban water distribution systems and are currently formed by pipes, nodes and loops. In this article, a deterministic mathematical programming approach is proposed, aiming to minimize the cost of looped WDNs, considering known pipe lengths and a discrete set of commercially available diameters. The optimization model constraints are mass balances in nodes, energy balances in loops and hydraulic equations, in such a way that no additional software is needed to find the appropriate pressure drops and water velocities. Generalized disjunctive programming is used to reformulate the discrete optimization problem to a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem. The GAMS (General Algebraic Modeling System) environment is used to solve the problem.     Exploiting the Use of Convolutional Neural Networks for Localization in Indoor Environments

    Indoor localization has been an active research area for the last two decades. A great number of sensors have been applied in the task of localization—some with high computational and energy demands (e.g. laser beams), or with issues related to the coverage area, for example, by making use of images obtained by a network of cameras. A different approach, which presents less energy demands and a wide area of coverage, can be created by means of the signal strength of wireless networks. The open issue with signal strength is its high instability due to interferences, attenuation and fading, which, in general, makes the localization systems to present less than desired accuracy. In this article, we exploit the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets) in the task of localization. The main motivation behind the employment of ConvNets is its inherent ability of feature extraction, which we believe can deal better with the noise without a filtering step. We evaluate how ConvNets can be employed and identify the best topologies that lead to the lowest errors

    Width/length–weight relationships and condition factor of seven decapod crustaceans in a Brazilian tropical estuary

    The analysis of body relationships and condition factors are useful tools in studies of marine populations, and they have been widely used in fishery research and management. In this study, width–weight (WWR) and length–weight (LWR) relationships and Fulton's condition factors were analyzed for six commercially important decapod crustacean species from the Paraguaçu River estuary (Todos os Santos Bay), eastern Brazil, namely Callinectes danae, C. exasperatus, C. marginatus, C. ornatus, Goniopsis cruentata and Ucides cordatus, and one non-indigenous species, Charybdis helleri. In total 5,704 individuals were measured and weighed during five years (2012–2017). The three allometric growth types for the crustacean species were observed, being most frequently the negative allometric growth. The analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) revealed significant differences between the sexes and climatic seasons in WWR/LWRs for the four species of the genus Callinectes, C. helleri, G. cruentata and U. cordatus, except for females and males of C. danae in WWR. The means for condition factor were generally higher for females than for males during the dry period, and in general, indicating good conditions for crustacean species. This study provided morpho-biometric parameters information will contribute stock management of traditional artisanal fisheries, and enable future comparative studies of populations of the same species.9 página

    Dry Matter Yield of Promising \u3cem\u3ePanicum maximum\u3c/em\u3e Genotypes in Response to Phosphorus and Liming on Brazilian Savannah

    Soil fertility of the Brazilian savannah Cerrado is naturally poor. Extensive areas of pastures located in the central part of territory are cultivated with Brachiaria grasses which are less demanding for soil nutrients and lime (Rao et al. 1998). On the other hand, Panicum maximum cultivars such as the high yielding Mombaça grass recommended to intensive beef and dairy cattle systems (Euclides et al. 2008), must be seeded with a higher amount of fertilizer, especially phosphorus (P). Consequently there is an effort for selection of P. maximum genotypes with low P demand and high responsiveness.     BRS Sarandi: A New Andropogon Gayanus Cultivar for Tropical Pastures

    BRS Sarandi is adapted to low and medium fertility soils. It has a medium-high height, with a semi-erect growth habit and a high total number of tillers. The annual productivity of dry matter is 11 t ha-1, concentrated in the rainy season (90%). Of the total DM produced, 60% are leaves. The levels of crude protein (CP), in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) are, on average, 8.7, 56.5, 66.7 and 38.2%, respectively. . The average daily weight gain was 0.7 kg/head/day, the gain per was and 1.7 kg ha-1 day with no supplementation except for mineral salt. The weight gain per area (AG) reached 15 @/ha/year with an average stocking rate of 2.5 AU. BRS Sarandi was registered in the Brazilian Cultivar Registry (Registro Nacional de Cultivares - RNC/MAPA) and is protected in the National Cultivar Protection System (Sistema Nacional de Proteção de Cultivares - SNPC/MAPA)

    Quantitative Proteomic Analysis Reveals Changes in the Benchmark Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis Biovar Equi Exoproteome after Passage in a Murine Host

    Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis biovar equi is the etiologic agent of ulcerative lymphangitis. To investigate proteins that could be related to the virulence of this pathogen, we combined an experimental passage process using a murine model and high-throughput proteomics with a mass spectrometry, data-independent acquisition (LC-MSE) approach to identify and quantify the proteins released into the supernatants of strain 258_equi. To our knowledge, this approach allowed characterization of the exoproteome of a C. pseudotuberculosis equi strain for the first time. Interestingly, the recovery of this strain from infected mouse spleens induced a change in its virulence potential, and it became more virulent in a second infection challenge. Proteomic screening performed from culture supernatant of the control and recovered conditions revealed 104 proteins that were differentially expressed between the two conditions. In this context, proteomic analysis of the recovered condition detected the induction of proteins involved in bacterial pathogenesis, mainly related to iron uptake. In addition, KEGG enrichment analysis showed that ABC transporters, bacterial secretion systems and protein export pathways were significantly altered in the recovered condition. These findings show that secretion and secreted proteins are key elements in the virulence and adaptation of C. pseudotuberculosis. Collectively, bacterial pathogenesis-related proteins were identified that contribute to the processes of adherence, intracellular growth and evasion of the immune system.     Clinical study of a multivitamin and polymineral complex associated with Panax ginseng extract (Natus Gerin®)

    This study aimed to stablish the efficacy of a multivitamin and polyminerals supplemented with Panax ginseng extract (Natus Gerin®) on patients subjected to common physical or mental stress. Patients were randomly divided in two groups and underwent a thorough clinical examination. Group A received Natus Gerin® capsules and B placebo capsules. Two capsules were taken daily during meals during four weeks. Mood and physical activity were evaluated through a questionnaire assessing quality of life. From the 176 patients enrolled, 17 were excluded due to voluntary withdrawal, 81 completed the study in group A and 78 in group B. The treatment with Natus Gerin® increased the quality of life when compared to placebo. After 15 and 30 days, group A showed a significant increase in average scoring score from 1.78 to 3.78, and finally 5.32 points.
