    Arithmeticity of ideal hyperbolic right-angled polyhedra and hyperbolic link complements

    In this paper we provide a generalized construction of nonarithmetic hyperbolic orbiifolds in the spirit of Gromov and Piatetski-Shapiro. Nonarithmeticity of such orbifolds is based on recently obtained results connecting a behaviour of the so-called fc-subspaces (totally geodesic subspaces fixed by finite order elements of the commensurator) with arithmetic properties of hyperbolic orbifolds and manifolds. As an application, we verify arithmeticity of some particular class of ideal hyperbolic right-angled 33-polyhedra and hyperbolic link complements.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figure

    Scintillation Pulse Shape Discrimination in a Two-Phase Xenon Time Projection Chamber

    The energy and electric field dependence of pulse shape discrimination in liquid xenon have been measured in a 10 gm two-phase xenon time projection chamber. We have demonstrated the use of the pulse shape and charge-to-light ratio simultaneously to obtain a leakage below that achievable by either discriminant alone. A Monte Carlo is used to show that the dominant fluctuation in the pulse shape quantity is statistical in nature, and project the performance of these techniques in larger detectors. Although the performance is generally weak at low energies relevant to elastic WIMP recoil searches, the pulse shape can be used in probing for higher energy inelastic WIMP recoils.Comment: 7 pages, 11 figure

    Highly efficient energy-saving methods of pipeline transport have been developed on the basis of modern scientific approaches. A general concept and its implementation on the synergetic basis have been proposed. It is shown that stochastic motion modes arise while passing through intermittence, i.e. they are the result of collision of asymptotically stable and unstable motion states. It has been established that flow of air-fuel mixtures with inner weaves and inner portion turbulent motions is considered as a process of self-organization with collective flows. At the same time, effective coefficients of transfer of momentum, force and mass of the moving material flow are determined. The hypothesis of emergence of stochastic motion modes that arise during transition through intermittency has been justified, which makes it possible to derive the regularity of collision of asymptotically stable and unstable flows of air-fuel mixtures. The rheological model for flow of non-Newtonian fluids is proposed that takes into account the flow features, which makes it possible to determine the shear stress and viscosity of CWF at different values of the shear velocity. The mathematical model takes into account independent rheological parameters of the suspension, which depend on concentration and granulometric composition of coal, as well as on high-speed transportation modes. It has been established that the process of self-organization of mass transfer in the pneumatic transport pipeline is carried out by additional energy supply of the moving material flow and provides creation of additional vorticity of the flow. There have been determined the main tasks solved by intensification of the processes in the transport pipeline, which makes it possible to increase efficiency of its operation.Выполнено исследование явлений, происходящих в транспортном трубопроводе при перемещении смесей в нестационарных режимах массопереноса. Предложена реологическая модель движения неньютоновских жидкостей.     Reduced Mass and Diversity of the Colonic Microbiome in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis and Their Improvement with Ketogenic Diet

    Background: Colonic microbiome is thought to be involved in auto-immune multiple sclerosis (MS). Interactions between diet and the colonic microbiome in MS are unknown. Methods: We compared the composition of the colonic microbiota quantitatively in 25 MS patients and 14 healthy controls.Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) with 162 ribosomal RNA derived bacterial FISH probes was used. Ten of the MS patients received a ketogenic diet for 6 months. Changes in concentrations of 35 numerically substantial bacterial groups were monitored at baseline and at 2, 12, and 23/24 weeks. Results: No MS typical microbiome pattern was apparent.The total concentrations and diversity of substantial bacterial groups were reduced in MS patients (P < 0.001). Bacterial groups detected with EREC (mainly Roseburia), Bac303 (Bacteroides), and Fprau (Faecalibacterium prausnitzii) probes were diminished the most. The individual changes were multidirectional and inconsistent. The effects of a ketogenic diet were biphasic. In the short term, bacterial concentrations and diversity were further reduced. They started to recover at week 12 and exceeded significantly the baseline values after 23–24 weeks on the ketogenic diet. Conclusions: Colonic biofermentative function is markedly impaired in MS patients.The ketogenic diet normalized concentrations of the colonic microbiome after 6 months

    Engineered Phage Endolysin Eliminates Gardnerella Biofilm without Damaging Beneficial Bacteria in Bacterial Vaginosis Ex Vivo.

    Bacterial vaginosis is characterized by an imbalance of the vaginal microbiome and a characteristic biofilm formed on the vaginal epithelium, which is initiated and dominated by Gardnerella bacteria, and is frequently refractory to antibiotic treatment. We investigated endolysins of the type 1,4-beta-N-acetylmuramidase encoded on Gardnerella prophages as an alternative treatment. When recombinantly expressed, these proteins demonstrated strong bactericidal activity against four different Gardnerella species. By domain shuffling, we generated several engineered endolysins with 10-fold higher bactericidal activity than any wild-type enzyme. When tested against a panel of 20 Gardnerella strains, the most active endolysin, called PM-477, showed minimum inhibitory concentrations of 0.13-8 µg/mL. PM-477 had no effect on beneficial lactobacilli or other species of vaginal bacteria. Furthermore, the efficacy of PM-477 was tested by fluorescence in situ hybridization on vaginal samples of fifteen patients with either first time or recurring bacterial vaginosis. In thirteen cases, PM-477 killed the Gardnerella bacteria and physically dissolved the biofilms without affecting the remaining vaginal microbiome. The high selectivity and effectiveness in eliminating Gardnerella, both in cultures of isolated strains as well as in clinically derived samples of natural polymicrobial biofilms, makes PM-477 a promising alternative to antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial vaginosis, especially in patients with frequent recurrence
