    A developmental and genetic classification for malformations of cortical development: update 2012.

    Malformations of cerebral cortical development include a wide range of developmental disorders that are common causes of neurodevelopmental delay and epilepsy. In addition, study of these disorders contributes greatly to the understanding of normal brain development and its perturbations. The rapid recent evolution of molecular biology, genetics and imaging has resulted in an explosive increase in our knowledge of cerebral cortex development and in the number and types of malformations of cortical development that have been reported. These advances continue to modify our perception of these malformations. This review addresses recent changes in our perception of these disorders and proposes a modified classification based upon updates in our knowledge of cerebral cortical development

    Seismic behavior of posttensioned self-centering precast concrete dual-shell steel columns

    This paper describes an innovative bridge column technology for application in seismic regions. The proposed technology combines a precast posttensioned composite steel-concrete hollow-core column, with supplemental energy dissipation, in a way to minimize postearthquake residual lateral displacements. The column consists of two steel cylindrical shells, with high-performance concrete cast in between. Both shells act as permanent formwork; the outer shell substitutes for the longitudinal and transverse reinforcement, because it works in composite action with the concrete, whereas the inner shell removes unnecessary concrete volume from the column, prevents concrete implosion, and prevents buckling of energy dissipating dowels when embedded in the concrete. Large inelastic rotations can be accommodated at the end joints with minimal structural damage, since gaps are allowed to open at these locations and to close upon load reversal. Longitudinal posttensioned high-strength steel threaded bars, designed to respond elastically, in combination with gravity forces ensure self-centering behavior. Internal or external steel devices provide energy dissipation by axial yielding. This paper describes the main requirements for the design of these columns and also discusses the experimental findings from two quasi-static tests

    What if? Mouse proteomics after gene inactivation

    The complex interactions among proteins and of proteins with small molecular weight protein ligands are overturned every time one of the components of the network is missing. For study purposes, animal models lacking one protein are obtained by experimental manipulation of the genome: in the knocking out approach, a gene is altered through the insertion of an artificial DNA sequence, which halts the transcription-translation sequence of events. In this review we have compiled the research papers that analyze the effects of knocking out individual genes on the proteomes of various tissues/organs throughout the body. We have gathered and organized all the available evidence and then compared the proteomic data in order to stress the context-specificity of the outcome every time two or more organs were investigated in the same KO mice. Finally, in a symmetrical approach to the above, we surveyed whether there is any obvious overlap among the effects of different KO on the same organ, marking affection of general pathways or lacking specificity of the gene targeting. Specific attention was put on the possible involvement of cellular stress markers

    Wernicke's Encephalopathy: 'plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose'

    Aims: To develop clinical guidelines to identify individuals who misuse alcohol and are at risk of developing Wernicke's Encephalopathy (WE). Method: Non-systematic literature review of studies which includes a careful clinical record of the development of signs and symptoms of thiamine deficiency and in which the diagnosis of WE has been confirmed at autopsy. Results: The review of the clinical findings in cases of WE, diagnosed at autopsy, shows a consistent pattern of signs and symptoms. The pattern appears to be similar regardless of whether the thiamine deficiency is related to nutritional problems alone or associated with alcohol misuse. Conclusions: The assessment of the degree of thiamine deficiency and the diagnosis of WE remain a clinical evaluation, and guidelines are suggested to help the clinician. Since neurotoxicity due to the metabolism of excessive alcohol in patients with chronic and severe alcohol dependence may be an important factor in determining long-term outcome of treatment, this must form part of the overall evaluation

    Natural stone masonry characterization for the shaking-table test of a scaled building specimen

    This paper discusses the material characterization tests on stone masonry specimens, and the in-plane cyclic shear-compression tests on four half-scale unreinforced stone masonry piers, which complement a shaking-table test on a half-scale building aggregate prototype. Material characterization tests allowed defining a mortar composition suitable for satisfying the similitude relationships associated with the half-scale tests. Vertical and diagonal compression tests provided a complete description of the mechanical properties of masonry assemblies, while in-plane cyclic shear-compression tests allow determining the hysteretic behavior of masonry piers with different aspect ratios and axial compression levels. Strength and displacement capacities corresponding to the observed damage mechanisms and failure modes were also identified and associated with the specimens geometric and loading conditions. These activities are part of an experimental and numerical research project jointly carried by the University of Pavia, Italy, and the Ɖcole Polytechnique FĆ©dĆ©rale de Lausanne, Switzerland, which aims at assessing the seismic vulnerability of natural stone masonry building aggregates of the historical center of Basel, Switzerland
