    Some structural and emergent trends in Social Housing in Portugal. Rethinking housing policies in times of crisis

    First of all, this article intends to analyse some structural trends in social housing in Portugal, while relating it with its welfare state regime nature, namely its incipient and tardy character, one that is predominantly oriented towards sectors other than housing. Having other European countries as reference, with different welfare state regimes, we will then point substantive differences in dimension, weight, access forms and target public in this housing sector. Consequently, our main argument revolves around the consequences of a fragile public investment in this domain, which is further channelled in a disparate and bipolar way between a small public promotion of social housing and the incentive to homeownership. We chiefly discuss, as a consequence of this model, the narrowing profile of social housing publics, in a spatially (and temporally) concentrated rationale, gathering individuals with common vulnerability features, lacking the ability to engage in positive residential and social mobility paths. Secondly, we discuss how the current economic and financial crisis, along with profound sociodemographic and labour market changes, determines academics and policy-makers to rethink housing policies and the very role of the state. on the one hand, we are faced with the drastic reduction of state resources and its investment capacity; on the other hand, there is the emergence of new housing needs, as a result of the crisis and also due to more structural economic and social transformations. This context, not only in Portugal but also in Europe, jeopardises policies and housing systems as we now them so far, reintroducing the argument over access (and affordability) to housing by more heterogeneous groups than the common profile of social housing beneficiaries at the moment. We therefore question the role of the state, the rationale and articulation possibilities with other actors and sectors, the financing model and de variety of audiences for whom the right to housing is not yet (or not anymore) guaranteed.FCTinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    In this paper, we describe a cross-disciplinary process that uses photogrammetric surveys as a precise basis for video projection mapping techniques. Beginning with a solid basis that uses geoinformatics technologies, such as laser scanning and photogrammetric survey, the method sets, as a first step, the physical and geometrical acquisition of the object. Precision and accuracy are the basics that allow the analysis of the artwork, both at a small or large scale, to evaluate details and correspondences. Testing contents at different scales of the object, using 3D printed replicas or real architectures is the second step of the investigation.The core of the process is the use of equations of collinearity into an interactive system such as Max 7, a visual programming language for music and multimedia, in order to facilitate operators to have a fast image correction, directly inside the interactive software. Interactivity gives also the opportunity to easily configure a set of actions to let the spectators to directly change and control the animation content. The paper goes through the different phases of the research, analysing the results and the progress through a series of events on real architecture and experiments on 3d printed models to test the level of involvement of the audience and the flexibility of the system in terms of content.The idea of using the collinearity equation inside da software Max 7 was developed for the M.Arch final Thesis by Massimo Visonà and Tommaso Pasini of the University of Venice (IUAV) in collaboration with the Digital Exhibit Postgraduate Master Course (MDE Iuav)

    Validation of non-equilibrium kinetics in CO2-N2 plasmas

    This work explores the effect of N2 addition on CO2 dissociation and on the vibrational kinetics of CO2 and CO under various non-equilibrium plasma conditions. A self-consistent kinetic model, previously validated for pure CO2 and CO2-O2 discharges, is further extended by adding the kinetics of N2. The vibrational kinetics considered include levels up to v = 10 for CO, v = 59 for N2 and up to v1 = 2 and v2 = v3 = 5, respectively for the symmetric stretch, bending and asymmetric stretch modes of CO2, and account for electron-impact excitation and de-excitation (e-V), vibration-to-translation (V-T) and vibration-to-vibration energy exchange (V-V) processes. The kinetic scheme is validated by comparing the model predictions with recent experimental data measured in a DC glow discharge operating in pure CO2 and in CO2-N2 mixtures, at pressures in the range 0.6 - 4 Torr (80.00 - 533.33 Pa) and a current of 50 mA. The experimental results show a higher vibrational temperature of the different modes of CO2 and CO and an increased dissociation fraction of CO2, that can reach values as high as 70%, when N2 is added to the plasma. On the one hand, the simulations suggest that the former effect is the result of the CO2-N2 and CO-N2 V-V transfers and the reduction of quenching due to the decrease of atomic oxygen concentration; on the other hand, the dilution of CO2 and dissociation products, CO and O2, reduces the importance of back reactions and contributes to the higher CO2 dissociation fraction with increased N2 content in the mixture, while the N2(B3Pg) electronically excited state further enhances the CO2 dissociation

    Mutations Of Androgen Receptor Gene In Brazilian Patients With Male Pseudohermaphroditism.

    We describe the identification of point mutations in the androgen receptor gene in five Brazilian patients with female assignment and behavior. The eight exons of the gene were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and analyzed for single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) to detect the mutations. Direct sequencing of the mutant PCR products demonstrated single transitions in three of these cases: G-->A in case 1, within exon C, changing codon 615 from Arg to His; G-->A in case 2, within exon E, changing codon 752 from Arg to Gln, and C-->T in case 3, within exon B, but without amino acid change.31775-

    Uma das dificuldades encontrada atualmente para os usuários da base de dados do Projeto Brasileiro do Genoma Café (CafEST) é a dificuldade em extrair manualmente todas as sequências armazenadas em seus projetos, no sistema Gene Projects. A partir dessa necessidade, foi desenvolvido um software para fazer a automatização do processo. Desta forma, o usuário do CafEST passa a dispor da comodidade de apenas informar ao programa quais projetos ele deseja que tenham as ESTs, contigs ou singlets extraídos. O programa consiste em dois scripts, um para fazer a extração das ESTs e outro para fazer a extração dos contigs e dos singlets. Os dois scripts retiram do CafEST apenas as ESTs, os contigs e singlets e salvam cada um desses em um arquivo do tipo FASTA. Isto facilita o uso dos mesmos em outras bases de dados e/ou ferramentas de bioinformátic

    Effects of Position of Rainfed Rice Field in a Toposequence on Water Availability and Rice Yield in Central Java, Indonesia

    The productivity of rainfed rice needs to be increased in order to support the Indonesian Food Security programs, especially rice. Rainfall is one of the main sources of the water availability on the rainfed rice field. This research was conducted from October 2000 to February 2001 at four sites in Central Java Province. The objectives of this research were to study thevariability of water availability that influenced by toposequen's position and to analyze the rice yields due to treatments on toposequence. This experiment was carried out in the farmers' field using “Group Balanced Block in Split-Split Plot Design” and Inceptisols soil order. Mainplots were the four positions in toposequence (top, upper middle, lower middle, and bottom), and the four villages were used as replication. The sub-plot wastreatments group and sub-sub-plot consists of group-1: farmer's practice and without weeding; group-2: farmer's practice without fertilizer and added recommended fertilizer. The research showed that rainfall affected the fluctuation of ground water table and standing water periods. The straw and unhulled rice/grain yields at the bottom position was the highest, and was significantly different from the top position of the toposequence, namely 7.1 and 5.6 t ha-1 for straw yield while 5.2 and 4.0 t ha-1 for grainyield. Without weeding, the straw and grain yields decreased by 1.0 t ha-1 (6.1 to 5.1 t ha-1) and 0.8 t ha-1 (4.6 to 3.8 t ha-1). While, without fertilization, the straw and grain yields were produced only 4.4 and 3.8 t ha-1. Straw and grain yields increased up to 7.0 and 5.1 t ha-1, respectively, when recommended fertilizers were applied
