The “Urmann” is a Woman. A Re-reading of Yūsuf Idrīs’ Abū ar-riǧāl

In this article I propose a close reading of Yūsuf Idrīs’ short story Abū ar-riǧāl. This text, published by the Egyptian author in 1988, addresses issues of homosexuality as opposed to the idea of masculinity prevailing in the social and political discourse of the Eighties in Egypt. Homosexuality is not a new subject in Arabic literature. It is in fact present in the literary production in the Arabic language since the Classical Age, and several homosexual characters can be noticed in modern and contemporary literature. The difference stands in presenting homosexuality without censorship or moral judgment, and above all masculinity is conceived by parameters, which are others in respect to those of the state discourse. When the short story was published, it passed almost unnoticed by the Arab reading public while scholars in the West did not discuss the issue at the core of it. Nowadays, when a lot of novels and short stories by Arab women and men writers propose the homosexual character anew, Abū ar-riǧāl testifies the presence of different point of views in the Arabic literature

Shortly after independence (1962), Algeria put in place different political discourses in order to strengthen the new citizens’ identity. Among these the discourse about manhood was crucial and focused especially on the muǧāhid, the fighter, whose fighting allowed Algerian to conquer freedom and independence. Therefore, manhood became a political ideal engaging social and political dynamics devoted to define the man-woman relationships. Moreover, it helped constructing a collective and normative imaginary in line with the hegemonic masculinity (Robert Connell 1996), i.e., men’s identity was construed as a universal model influencing society as well as politics. In this paper I present different forms of this discourse and outline the characteristic of the “true” muǧāhid, underscoring how this was built in order to define an imaged manhood

The text whose translation I present here (Barazangi. 2002) deals with feminist epistemology in the Muslim world. As the epistemological assumptions are different from that of Western feminist thought, I introduce it to make the reader familiar with some basic concepts. I consider this text a classic in its field as it is a fundamental text for the development of Muslim feminist thought, a thought whose beginning can be placed in the second half of the twentieth century. In the introduction, after presenting some critical issues, I will briefly introduce the author and her thought. Identifying Pediatric Obesity in the Retail Health Setting and Implications for Quality

    Get PDF
Pediatric obesity has reached an epidemic status. The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of overweight and obese patients, as well as how often and how accurately a diagnosis was coded. The population for this study included children ages 3-18. This cohort presented to retail health clinics in a large urban health system for school or sports physicals from June 1, 2017 to November 30, 2017. Method. A retrospective chart review was conducted. Statistical analysis was performed to determine if there was a relationship between obesity and age, ethnicity, race, and gender. Results. The study identified 15.9% of patients were overweight and 16.5% were obese. In practice, \u3c1% of patients had a formal diagnosis of overweight or obese; \u3c1% had screening measures reflecting nutrition and physical activity. Conclusion. Strategies are needed to improve efforts to diagnose and manage overweight and obese pediatric patients. Organizational recommendations for change are suggested based on guidelines for childhood obesity

Until recent years the only scholarly reference about women in the Algerian revolution was Les femmes algériennes dans la guerre (Paris, Plon, 1991) by former fighter Djamila Amrane. Starting from 2000, a great deal of memoirs, books and essays have been published, authored by women and focusing both on women’s role and experience during the battle of Algiers, and on the revolutionary process in a broader sense. This paper focuses on some of these women’s narratives, underlying the difference between their narrations and the State discourse. Though tackling taboo subjects like torture and sexual violence, women authors are nevertheless aware of the social and political implication of their struggle; today, after sixty years of independence, they still struggle for their right to be full citizens of Algeria

    Women leadership in the Mosque

Starting from the Friday woman lead prayer held in 2005 in New York, I focus in this paper on the role Muslim contemporary women play in shaping Muslim societies and communities to assert their authoritative role “in the mosque”. I begin by setting the scene of the event and, after a brief discussion of its symbolic meaning, I address two main questions: first, how the debate which followed the event contributed and contributes to promote a change inside the Muslim world and outside it, letting emerge some leading figures in the struggle for justice and equity in contemporary Islam; and second which are the theological and legal basis for the role of woman as imāma (prayer leader). Although the issue of women leadership in prayer is far from finding a unanimous consent, the debate demonstrates that some issues can and must be discussed, and that a change is possible only when Muslim women question the male elite power.    </p

    Get PDF
