Hetero-Diels–Alder reactions of hetaryl and aryl thioketones with acetylenic dienophiles

    Get PDF
Selected hetaryl and aryl thioketones react with acetylenecarboxylates under thermal conditions in the presence of LiClO4 or, alternatively, under high-pressure conditions (5 kbar) at room temperature yielding thiopyran derivatives. The hetero-Diels–Alder reaction occurs in a chemo- and regioselective manner. The initially formed [4 + 2] cycloadducts rearrange via a 1,3-hydrogen shift sequence to give the final products. The latter were smoothly oxidized by treatment with mCPBA to the corresponding sulfones. The authors thank the National Science Center (Cracow, Poland) for generous financial support (Grant Maestro-3 (Dec- 2012/06/A/ST5/00219). Mass tourism is widely regarded as one of the visible manifestations of globalization. Tourism development can be considered in every dimension of these processes: economic, social, cultural and even political. The high importance of tourism in the present global economy makes it a very popular research field, especially in the scope of economic dependence between tourism and globalization at the global or regional levels. Fully appreciating the achievements of research in this domain, the authors of this paper wish to refer to the scale of the unit and indicate how globalization impacts the individual purchasing decisions. The analysis is based on empirical studies within Polish tourist activity preferences. On the basis of these results the authors attempt to answer the following questions: (1) which tourists' attitudes may reveal the impact of globalization on their preferences and purchasing behaviors; (2) which 'mega-trends' of current tourism are visible in the attitude of Polish tourists; (3) are there differences in the model of tourist activity with reference to the sociodemographic features; (4) what is the spatial scope of preferred tourist destinations (i.e. is the compression of space as readily absorbed in the consciousness of the older population as in the younger?)

Cittaslow International Network: An Example of a Globalization Idea?

The strong dynamics of the development of the International Assembly of Cittaslow Association development (which now focuses not only on European cities, but also on centers located on other continents), has led to discussions about the place of the Cittaslow concept in the modern world and the relationship between the phenomenon of globalization and the Cittaslow development. Research conducted in the cities belonging to the Polish Assembly of Cittaslow Association provided an opportunity to examine the problem not only on the overall scale but gives also an opportunity to respond to this issue on the micro level - the level of individual consciousness of city dwellers. It appears that the original idea has taken on new meanings and serves as a response to the negative effects of globalization. It has acquired a transnational character and now is setting new global trends

Strong influence of the trifluoromethyl group on the chemoselectivity of [3+2]-cycloadditions of thiocarbonyl S-methanides with α,β-unsaturated ketones

The in situ-generated reactive thiocarbonyl S-methanides were reacted with fluorinated enones. The type of the obtained [3+2]-cycloadduct depends strongly on the location of the activating CF3 group. In the case of enones containing the CF3CH=CH moiety, the [3+2]- cycloaddition occurs chemo- and regioselectively onto the C=C bond to give trifluoromethylated tetrahydrothiophene derivatives. On the other hand, enones containing the CF3–C=O unit react as carbonyl dipolarophiles leading to trifluoromethylated 1,3- oxathiolanes also in a chemo- and regioselective manner. These are the first reported reactions of thiocarbonyl S-methanides with α,β-unsaturated ketones

New acceptor-donor-acceptor systems based on bis-(imino-1,8- naphthalimide)

In this paper, six novel symmetrical bis-(imino-1,8-naphthalimides) differing in core and N-substituent structure were synthesized, and their thermal (TGA, DSC), optical (UV-Vis, PL), electrochemical (DPV, CV) properties were evaluated. The compounds were stable to 280 C and could be transferred into amorphous materials. Electrochemical investigations showed their ability to occur reductions and oxidations processes. They exhibited deep LUMO levels of about -3.22 eV and HOMO levels above -5.80 eV. The optical investigations were carried out in the solutions (polar and non-polar) and in films and blends with PVK:PBD. Bis-(imino-1,8-naphthalimides) absorbed electromagnetic radiation in the range of 243–415 nm and emitted light from blue to yellow. Their capacity for light emission under voltage was preliminarily tested in devices with an active layer consisting of a neat compound and a blend with PVK:PBD. The diodes emitted green or red light

A genetic analysis of nitric oxide-mediated signaling during chronological aging in the yeast

In mammals, NO•, a signaling molecule is implicated in the regulation of vasodilation, neurotransmission and immune response. It is believed that NO• is a signaling molecule also in unicellular organism like yeast and may be involved in the regulation of apoptosis and sporulation. It has been reported that NO• is produced during chronological aging (CA) leading to an increase of the superoxide level, which in turn mediates apoptosis. Since this conclusion was based on indirect measurements of NO• by the Griess reaction, the role of NO• signaling during CA in the yeast remains uncertain. We investigated this issue more precisely using different genetic and biochemical methodologies. We used cells lacking the factors influencing nitrosative stress response like flavohemoglobin metabolizing NO•, S-nitrosoglutathione reductase metabolizing S-nitrosoglutathione and the transcription factor Fzf1p mediating NO• response. We measured the standard parameters describing CA and found an elevation in the superoxide level, percentage of death cells, the level of TUNEL positive cells and a decrease in proliferating potential. These observations showed no significant differences between wild type cells and the disruptants except for a small elevation of the superoxide level in the Δsfa1 mutant. The intracellular NO• level and flavohemoglobin expression decreased rather than increased during CA. Products of general nitrogen metabolism and protein tyrosine nitration were slightly decreased during CA, the magnitude of changes showing no differences between the wild type and the mutant yeast. Altogether, our data indicate that apoptosis during yeast CA is mediated by superoxide signaling rather than NO• signaling

Search for effective Lorentz and CPT violation using ZEUS data

    Get PDF
Lorentz and CPT symmetry in the quark sector of the Standard Model are studied in the context of an effective field theory using ZEUS e±p data. Symmetry-violating effects can lead to time-dependent oscillations of otherwise time-independent observables, including scattering cross sections. An analysis using five years of inclusive neutral-current deep inelastic scattering events corresponding to an integrated HERA luminosity of 372 pb-1 at s=318 GeV has been performed. No evidence for oscillations in sidereal time has been observed within statistical and systematic uncertainties. Constraints, most for the first time, are placed on 42 coefficients parametrizing dominant CPT-even dimension-four and CPT-odd dimension-five spin-independent modifications to the propagation and interaction of light quarks

Regional Self-government in Pomerania Being Born

    No full text
In this article the author undertakes to answer the question on how the idea of territorial self-government in Poland as well as of Pomeranian Voivodeship evolved and how it has been implemented. In the fi rst part of the text the author presents the aspirations of various social circles in the region, including representatives of democratic opposition, for reconstructing the state so as to establish local and regional self-government. This part covers the period before the administrative reform, that is turn of 1980s and 1990s. The second part serves to identify the problems which arose after the territorial self-government was introduced in 1990. It also presents the attempts at solving them via interregional cooperation and further reforms. The third part presents Pomeranian Voivodeship established as the result of the self-government reform of 1998 as well as problems related to anchoring it in the administrative system of the Republic of Poland. The article concludes with a set of research questions on the future status of the regional self-government in Pomerania
