Single wall carbon nanotube double quantum dot
We report on two top-gate defined, coupled quantum dots in a semiconducting
single wall carbon nanotube, constituting a tunable double quantum dot system.
The single wall carbon nanotubes are contacted by titanium electrodes, and
gated by three narrow top-gate electrodes as well as a back-gate. We show that
a bias spectroscopy plot on just one of the two quantum dots can be used to
extract the addition energy of both quantum dots. Furthermore, honeycomb charge
stability diagrams are analyzed by an electrostatic capacitor model that
includes cross capacitances, and we extract the coupling energy of the double
quantum dot.Comment: Published in Applied Physics Letters 4 December 2006.

Study of helium transfer technology for STICCR: Fluid management
The Space Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) is a long life cryogenically cooled space based telescope for infrared astronomy from 2 to 700 microns currently under study and planned for launch in the mid 90's. SIRTF will operate as a multi-user facility, initially carrying 3 instruments at the focal plane. It will be cooled to below 2 K by superfluid liquid helium to achieve radiometric sensitivity limited only by the statistical fluctuations in the natural infrared background radiation over most of its spectral range. The lifetime of the mission will be limited by the lifetime of the liquid helium supply, and is currently baselined to be 2 years. Candidates are reviewed for a liquid management device to be used in the resupply of liquid helium, and for the selection of an appropriate candidate
Illustrating phallic worship: uses of material objects and the production of sexual knowledge in eighteenth-century antiquarianism and early twentieth-century sexual science
This is the final version of the article. Available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this record. This article reveals previously overlooked connections between eighteenth-century antiquarianism and early twentieth-century sexual science by presenting a comparative reading of two illustrated books: An Account of the Remains of the Worship of Priapus, by British antiquarian scholar Richard Payne Knight (1750–1824), and Die Weltreise eines Sexualforschers (The World Journey of a Sexologist), by German sexual scientist Magnus Hirschfeld (1868–1935). A close analysis of these publications demonstrates the special status of material artefacts and the strategic engagement with visual evidence in antiquarian and scientific writings about sex. Through its exploration of the similarities between antiquarian and sexual scientific thought, the article demonstrates the centrality of material culture to the production of sexual knowledge in the Western world. It also opens up new perspectives on Western intellectual history and on the intellectual origins of sexual science. While previous scholarship has traced the beginnings of sexual science back to nineteenth-century medical disciplines, this article shows that sexual scientists drew upon different forms of evidence and varied methodologies to produce sexual knowledge and secure scientific authority. As such, sexual science needs to be understood as a field with diverse intellectual roots that can be traced back (at least) to the eighteenth century. All authors gratefully acknowledge financial support from the Wellcome Trust [grant numbers NC110388, 106654/Z/14/Z and 106653/Z/14/Z]
Biochemical correlates of cardiac hypertrophy. IV. Observations on the cellular organization of growth during myocardial hypertrophy in the rat
The mechanisms by which the DNA content of the heart increases following acutely induced cardiac hypertrophy were investigated in mature Sprague-Dawley rats. Special attention was given to the cellular organization of the growth process. Autoradiographic studies provided conclusive evidence that the uptake of tritiated thymidine is completely limited to nonmuscular cellular elements, chiefly connective tissue cells. The frequency of labeled nuclei was increased by sixfold during hypertrophy. The thymidine pool was not appreciably different in the hypertrophied hearts. Connective tissue nuclei formed a larger proportion of the total nuclear population in hypertrophied hearts, and their distribution was less uniform than in the normal heart. Quantitative histologic studies also showed that the total number of left ventricular muscle cell nuclei did not increase during hypertrophy but rather may have decreased slightly. Both the concentration and the total amount of hydroxyproline increased in parallel with the proliferative changes in the connective tissue and provide further supportive evidence to the autoradiographic and histologic studies
Resonantly enhanced nonlinear optics in semiconductor quantum wells: An application to sensitive infrared detection
A novel class of coherent nonlinear optical phenomena, involving induced
transparency in quantum wells, is considered in the context of a particular
application to sensitive long-wavelength infrared detection. It is shown that
the strongest decoherence mechanisms can be suppressed or mitigated, resulting
in substantial enhancement of nonlinear optical effects in semiconductor
quantum wells.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, replaced with revised versio
Spin-orbit interaction and anomalous spin relaxation in carbon nanotube quantum dots
We study spin relaxation and decoherence caused by electron-lattice and
spin-orbit interaction and predict striking effects induced by magnetic fields
. For particular values of , destructive interference occurs resulting in
ultralong spin relaxation times exceeding tens of seconds. For small
phonon frequencies , we find a spin-phonon noise
spectrum -- a novel dissipation channel for spins in quantum dots -- which can
reduce by many orders of magnitude. We show that nanotubes exhibit
zero-field level splitting caused by spin-orbit interaction. This enables an
all-electrical and phase-coherent control of spin.Comment: 19 pages, 12 figure
Global periodicity conditions for maps and recurrences via Normal Forms
We face the problem of characterizing the periodic cases in parametric
families of (real or complex) rational diffeomorphisms having a fixed point.
Our approach relies on the Normal Form Theory, to obtain necessary conditions
for the existence of a formal linearization of the map, and on the introduction
of a suitable rational parametrization of the parameters of the family. Using
these tools we can find a finite set of values p for which the map can be
p-periodic, reducing the problem of finding the parameters for which the
periodic cases appear to simple computations. We apply our results to several
two and three dimensional classes of polynomial or rational maps. In particular
we find the global periodic cases for several Lyness type recurrences.Comment: 25 page
Precautionary advice about mobile phones: Public understandings and intended responses
The official published version can be obtained from the link below - Copyright @ Taylor & FrancisThere is a widespread academic and policy debate about public responses to precaution in public health campaigns. This paper explores these issues in relation to the precautionary stance adopted in the UK around the regulation of mobile telecommunications. The aim of the paper is to examine the nature of attitudes to precaution, and the way in which these, along with other relevant variables, relate to the intention to adopt relevant behaviours. The results from an experimental study (n = 173) indicate that people distinguish between two dimensions of precaution: firstly in relation to its value or necessity per se and secondly as anchored to notions of governance. The two variables differentially relate to other variables including trust and uncertainty, and are predictive of intended behaviour change indirectly, through worry about mobile phone risks. Precautionary advice was generally interpreted as causing concern rather than providing reassurance. The results suggest that precaution may be considered a valuable stance but this does not mean that it is seen as good governance or that it will reduce concern. Whilst the discourse of precaution is aimed at reducing concern, it appears that the uptake of relevant behaviours is largely triggered by worry
