    Relações entre dados antropométricos e sócio-econômicos em escolares de diversas classes sociais, Rio de Janeiro, Brasil

    The nutritional status according to anthropometric data was assessed in 756 schoolchildren from 5 low-income state schools and in one private school in the same part of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The prevalence of stunting and wasting (cut-off point:O estado nutricional, de acordo com os dados antropométricos, foi avaliado em 756 escolares de cinco escolas estaduais de baixa renda e urna escola particular, na mesma área geográfica do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. A prevalência de déficit de estatura/idade e de peso/altura (pontos de corte: 90% estatura/idade e 80% peso/estatura) encontrada nas escolas estaduais foi de 6,2 a 15,2% e 3,3 a 24,0%, respectivamente, enquanto que na escola particular foi de 2,3 a 3,5%, respectivamente. Maior número de obesos foi encontrado na escola particular (18%). Os problemas nutricionais parecem ocorrer mais assiduamente com o aumento da idade das crianças. Recomenda-se avaliar os escolares dentro do contexto de um sistema de vigilância nutricional

    Arithmetic and equidistribution of measures on the sphere

    Motivated by problems of mathematical physics (quantum chaos) questions of equidistribution of eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on a Riemannian manifold have been studied by several authors. We consider here, in analogy with arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces, orthonormal bases of eigenfunctions of the Laplace operator on the two dimensional unit sphere which are also eigenfunctions of an algebra of Hecke operators which act on these spherical harmonics. We formulate an analogue of the equidistribution of mass conjecture for these eigenfunctions as well as of the conjecture that their moments tend to moments of the Gaussian as the eigenvalue increases. For such orthonormal bases we show that these conjectures are related to the analytic properties of degree eight arithmetic L-functions associated to triples of eigenfunctions. Moreover we establish the conjecture for the third moments and give a conditional (on standard analytic conjectures about these arithmetic L-functions) proof of the equdistribution of mass conjecture.Comment: 18 pages, an appendix gives corrections to the article "On the central critical value of the triple product L-function" (In: Number Theory 1993-94, 1-46.     Preference of pear psyllid (Cacopsylla pyri) for specific colour inspires new application in plant protection

    Understanding the cues used by insects to select their hosts is essential for developing sustainable control strategies, particularly for plant disease vectors. Pear psyllids (Cacopsylla pyri) are vectors of the bacterial disease pear decline caused by ‘Candidatus Phytoplasma pyri’. Yellow sticky traps are typically used to monitor pest insects, but they are non-specific and capture many beneficial insects, too. Against the background of improving visual traps, this research aimed to investigate the colour choice behaviour of C. pyri. Our first approach was to screen insect colour preferences by performing choice assays with different LED colour wavelengths in a small-scale choice arena under controlled conditions. Over six LEDs tested, there was a strong significant preference of C. pyri for green 1 (532 nm) followed by green 2 (549 nm). Yellow (576 nm), orange (593 nm), red 1 (619 nm) and red 2 (633 nm) were less attractive than green. Subsequently, the trapping of pear psyllids was tested in the field using newly developed traps covered with transparent-coloured PVC sheets with a similar wavelength of the preferred LEDs. Red and completely transparent traps have been used as control and combined in randomized blocks in a pear orchard. Field trials revealed that green traps ranging from 525 to 537 nm attracted significantly more pear psyllids than longer wavelength green (543 nm), red and transparent ones. The construction of specific green-coloured sticky traps seems promising for improving psyllid trapping, especially during an early infestation at low population densities. Thus, these visual traps should be considered in future and integrated into psyllid monitoring as part of integrated pest management

    O impacto das medidas de melhoria do abastecimento de água e esgoto sobre a diarréia e parasitose intestinal: experiência brasileira com crianças de comunidades de baixa renda

    During the second half of 1986 the impact of the improvement of water supply and excreta disposal facilities on diarrheal diseases and intestinal parasitosis was studied in 254 children up to six years of age from two favelas (shanty towns) of Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The estimated incidence of diarrhea was 6.2 episodes/child year and the estimated period prevalence reached 31.0 episode days/ child/ year. The point prevalence of parasitosis was 70.7% (Ascaris lumbricoides: 55.4%, Trichuris trichiura: 19.6%, Giardia lamblia: 17.9%). The estimated prevalence of diarrhea decreased with improvement of water supply and sanitation facilities to 45% and 44% respectively, but no statistically significant impact was observed in the case of parasitosis. School education and weaning practice were found to be other important determinants of diarrhea.Em 1986 pesquisou-se, junto a 254 crianças de até 6 anos de idade, residentes em duas favelas de Belo Horizonte (Brasil), o impacto das medidas de melhoramento do abastecimento de água e esgoto na incidência de diarréia e parasitose intestinal. Até então, a incidência de diarréia era estimada em 6,2 casos por criança e ano, com uma duração predominante de 31,0 dias por caso/criança/ano. A taxa de difusão de parasitose alcançava 70,7% (Ascaris lumbricoides: 55,4%, Trichuris trichiura: 19,6%; Giardia lamblia: 17,9%). Após os melhoramentos no abastecimento de água e esgoto, a incidência de diarréia caiu para 45% e 44%, respectivamente. Quanto à parasitose, entretanto, não se constatou nenhum impacto estatisticamente significante. Também verificou-se que o grau de educação escolar e práticas de desmame são determinantes de grande importância na incidência de diarréia

    Impurities in commercial titanium dental implants – A mass and optical emission spectrometry elemental analysis

    Objective: Titanium (Ti) is considered bioinert and is still regarded as the “gold standard” material for dental implants. However, even ‘commercial pure’ Ti will contain minor fractions of elemental impurities. Evidence demonstrating the release of Ti ions and particles from ‘passive’ implant surfaces is increasing and has been attributed to biocorrosion processes which may provoke immunological reactions. However, Ti observed in peri-implant tissues has been shown to be co-located with elements considered impurities in biomedical alloys. Accordingly, this study aimed to quantify the composition of impurities in commercial Ti dental implants. Methods: Fifteen commercial titanium dental implant systems were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Results: The elemental composition of implants manufactured from commercially pure grades of Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, and the TiZr alloy (Roxolid) conformed to the respective ISO/ASTM standards or manufacturers´ data (TiZr/Roxolid). However, all implants investigated included exogenous metal contaminants including Ni, Cr, Sb, and Nb to a variable extent. Other contaminants detected in a fraction of implants included As and the radionuclides U-238 and Th-232. Significance: Although all Ti implant studies conformed with their standard compositions, potentially allergenic, noxious metals and even radionuclides were detected. Since there are differences in the degree of contamination between the implant systems, a certain impurity fraction seems technically avoidable. The clinical relevance of these findings must be further investigated, and an adaptation of industry standards should be discussed

    Foi analisado, em 1986, o estado nutricional e de saúde de 254 crianças de idade inferior a seis anos, procedentes de duas favelas da cidade de Belo Horizonte, Brasil, e estudada a situação sócio-econômica dos seus pais. O estado nutricional das crianças foi caracterizado em função da redução do crescimento (Z-score: 20,1% < -2) e não em função da perda de peso (Z-score: 3,7During the second half of 1986 the health and nutritional status of 254 children aged up to six years was studied, as well as the socio-economic situation of their parents in two favelas (shantytowns) in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The nutritional status of the children was characterized by stunting (Z-score: 20.1% < -2) but not by wasting (Z-score: 3.7% < -2). Consideration was also given to how far stunting was caused by high morbidity such as acute respiratory infections (point prevalence: 38.5%), diarrheal diseases (point prevalence: 11.5%) and parasitosis (point prevalence: 70.3%). Furthermore, anemia (point prevalence: 29.7%) appeared as another health problem. The most important determinant of anthropometric indices turned out to be the mother's schooling. From the present data it can be hypothesized that the nutritional status of the children was limited less by the lack of food than by their poor health status

    Optical one-way quantum computing with a simulated valence-bond solid

    One-way quantum computation proceeds by sequentially measuring individual spins (qubits) in an entangled many-spin resource state. It remains a challenge, however, to efficiently produce such resource states. Is it possible to reduce the task of generating these states to simply cooling a quantum many-body system to its ground state? Cluster states, the canonical resource for one-way quantum computing, do not naturally occur as ground states of physical systems. This led to a significant effort to identify alternative resource states that appear as ground states in spin lattices. An appealing candidate is a valence-bond-solid state described by Affleck, Kennedy, Lieb, and Tasaki (AKLT). It is the unique, gapped ground state for a two-body Hamiltonian on a spin-1 chain, and can be used as a resource for one-way quantum computing.     A Precise Determination of the Running Coupling in the SU(3) Yang-Mills Theory

    A non-perturbative finite-size scaling technique is used to study the evolution of the running coupling (in a certain adapted scheme) in the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. At low energies contact is made with the fundamental dynamical scales, such as the string tension K, while at larger energies the coupling is shown to evolve according to perturbation theory.     Wormholes and Flux Tubes in 5D Kaluza-Klein Theory

    In this paper spherically symmetric solutions to 5D Kaluza-Klein theory, with ``electric'' and/or ``magnetic'' fields are investigated. It is shown that the global structure of the spacetime depends on the relation between the ``electrical'' and ``magnetic'' Kaluza-Klein fields. For small ``magnetic'' field we find a wormhole-like solution. As the strength of the ``magnetic'' field is increased relative to the strength of the ``electrical'' field, the wormhole-like solution evolves into a finite or infinite flux tube depending on the strengths of the two fields. For the large ``electric'' field case we conjecture that this solution can be considered as the mouth of a wormhole, with the G55G_{55}, G5tG_{5t} and G5ϕG_{5\phi} components of the metric acting as the source of the exotic matter necessary for the formation of the wormhole's mouth. For the large ``magnetic'' field case a 5D flux tube forms, which is similar to the flux tube between two monopoles in Type-II superconductors, or the hypothesized color field flux tube between two quarks in the QCD vacuum.Comment: 12 pages, 5 eps.figures, REVTEX, Discussion about null surfaces ammended.
