    Effects of gut chemistry in marine bivalves on the assimilation of metals from ingested sediment particles

    Bioavailability and uptake of trace metals by benthic animals are often assumed to be limited by authigenic sulfide minerals because of their low metal solubilities and reactivities under sedimentary conditions. However, digestive processes and gut conditions such as Eh, pH, and enzyme or surfactant activity, can affect the release of ingested metals in the gut and control uptake. In a series of laboratory experiments with the deposit-feeding clam, Macoma balthica and the suspension-feeding mussel, Mytilus edulis, we assessed assimilation efficiencies (AE) of radioisotopes of Ag, Cd and Co associated with acid-volatile sulfide (AVS), iron oxide (re-oxidized AVS), and reduced and oxidized natural sediment. To evaluate controls on AE, we measured the gut passage time (GPT) of ingested particles, gut Eh, pH, and extraction of Ag, Cd, and Co from particles into gut juice. In general, the overall trends of AEs and metal extraction were Co \u3e Cd ≥ Ag. AEs, metal extraction, and GPTs were higher in M. balthica than in M. edulis in most cases. M. balthica tended overall to take up metals more readily from oxidized than reduced natural sediment, whereas M. edulis did the opposite for Co and Cd. AEs of metals in reoxidized AVS (Fe-oxides) were generally similar to oxic sediment (Ag being the exception for M. edulis). In M. balthica, there was no significant difference in AEs from AVS and Fe-oxide particles for Cd (14 -20%) or Co (27-35%), but AEs for Ag from AVS particles were greater in large clams (28%) than small clams (15%). There were generally poor correlations between AEs of metals and metal release in gut juice. Low pH and moderate reducing conditions facilitated dissolution of AVS- and iron oxide-bound metal in the guts of both animals. The GPTs (64 h) for Co associated with AVS particles in M. edulis were an order of magnitude greater than for Ag and Cd, or for Co associated with other particle types. Overall, no single mechanism appears to control metal AE in marine bivalves and in vitro studies of metal dissolution in gut juice do not completely mimic the complex digestive processes operating in vivo, and thus cannot fully explain metal assimilation in these animals

    Manipulation and Optical Detection of Colloidal Functional Plasmonic Nanostructures in Microfluidic Systems

    The very strong optical resonances of plasmonic nanostructures can be harnessed for sensitive detection of chemical and biomolecular analytes in small volumes. Here we describe an approach towards optical biosensing in microfluidic systems using plasmonic structures (functionalized gold nanoparticles) in colloidal suspension. The plasmonic nanoparticles provide the optical signal, in the form of resonant light scattering or absorption, and the microfluidic environment provides means for selectively manipulating the nanoparticles through fluid dynamics and electric fields. In the first part we discuss recent literature on functionalized colloidal particles and the methods for handling them in microfluidic systems. Then we experimentally address aspects of nanoparticle functionalization, detection through plasmonic resonant light scattering under dark-field illumination and the electrokinetic behavior of the particles under the action of an alternating electric field

    Delocalized Nature of the E'-delta Center in Amorphous Silicon Dioxide

    We report an experimetal study by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) of E'-delta point defect induced by gamma ray irradiation in amorphous SiO2. We obtained an estimetion of the intensity of the 10 mT doublet characterizing the EPR spectrum of such a defect arising from hyperfine interaction of the unpaired electron with a 29Si (I=1/2) nucleus. Moreover, determining the intensity ratio between this hyperfine doublet and the main resonance line of E'-delta center, we pointed out that unpaired electron wave function of this center is actually delocalized over four nearly equivalent silicon atoms.Comment: approved for publication in Physical Review Letter

    Doing burden-sharing right to deliver natural climate solutions for carbon dioxide removal

    Carbon dioxide removal (CDR) figures prominently in modelled pathways to achieve the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5-2°C compared to pre-industrial levels. However, national roles and responsibilities to deliver CDR have been informed with CDR quota analyses that focus on developed economies and global major emitters. This study extends the discussion to implications for developing countries. For that purpose, we employ a diverse set of allocation methods on a wide range of global emissions scenarios to address equitability and uncertainty in sharing the burden of climate change mitigation. We further focus on tropical developing countries due to their large potential for natural climate solutions (NCS) that deliver CDR. Our analysis indicates the potential for stringent CDR quotas for the top seven countries that contribute ∼60% of pantropical cost-effective NCS potential, with median national quotas across emissions scenarios ranging from 0.1-29 GtCO2. However, the results reveal strong heterogeneity of quotas and inherent bias across allocation methods making agreement on an ‘equitable’ quota unlikely. Competition among NCS and non-NCS CDR options may arise when ambitious CDR quotas are implemented in countries with vast forest areas or large potential for expansion of tree cover. Therefore, it is important to not use CDR quotas to evaluate national climate actions or to inform climate targets that could exacerbate trade-offs between emissions reduction, biodiversity and ecosystem services in these NCS-rich countries. Instead, results from burden-sharing exercises could foster higher ambition if used to inform voluntary cooperation mechanisms. Discrepancy between perceived fairness and CDR quotas should be critically and transparently embraced to encourage acknowledgment of socio-ecological co-benefits as compensation. Such an approach will allow tropical developing economies to prioritise protection and restoration of nature in their climate change mitigation pathways

    Characterization of E'delta and triplet point defects in oxygen deficient amorphous silicon dioxide

    We report an experimental study by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of gamma ray irradiation induced point defects in oxygen deficient amorphous SiO2 materials. We have found that three intrinsic (E'gamma, E'delta and triplet) and one extrinsic ([AlO4]0) paramagnetic centers are induced. All the paramagnetic defects but E'gamma center are found to reach a concentration limit value for doses above 10^3 kGy, suggesting a generation process from precursors. Isochronal thermal treatments of a sample irradiated at 10^3 kGy have shown that for T>500 K the concentrations of E'gamma and E'delta centers increase concomitantly to the decrease of [AlO4]0. This occurrence speaks for an hole transfer process from [AlO4]0 centers to diamagnetic precursors of E' centers proving the positive charge state of the thermally induced E'gamma and E'delta centers and giving insight on the origin of E'gamma from an oxygen vacancy. A comparative study of the E'delta center and of the 10 mT doublet EPR signals on three distinct materials subjected to isochronal and isothermal treatments, has shown a quite general linear correlation between these two EPR signals. This result confirms the attribution of the 10 mT doublet to the hyperfine structure of the E'delta center, originating from the interaction of the unpaired electron with a nucleus of 29Si (I=1/2). Analogies between the microwave saturation properties of E'gamma and E'delta centers and between those of their hyperfine structures are found and suggest that the unpaired electron wave function involves similar Si sp3 hybrid orbitals; specifically, for the E'delta the unpaired electron is supposed to be delocalized over four such orbitals of four equivalent Si atoms.Comment: Approved for publication in Physical Review

    Trade-Offs Between Carbon Stocks and Timber Recovery in Tropical Forests are Mediated by Logging Intensity

    Forest degradation accounts for ~70% of total carbon losses from tropical forests. Substantial emissions are from selective logging, a land-use activity that decreases forest carbon density. To maintain carbon values in selectively logged forests, climate change mitigation policies and government agencies promote the adoption of reduced-impact logging (RIL) practices. However, whether RIL will maintain both carbon and timber values in managed tropical forests over time remains uncertain. In this study, we quantify the recovery of timber stocks and aboveground carbon at an experimental site where forests were subjected to different intensities of RIL (4, 8, and 16 trees/ha). Our census data span 20 years postlogging and 17 years after the liberation of future crop trees from competition in a tropical forest on the Guiana Shield, a globally important forest carbon reservoir. We model recovery of timber and carbon with a breakpoint regression that allowed us to capture elevated tree mortality immediately after logging. Recovery rates of timber and carbon were governed by the presence of residual trees (i.e., trees that persisted through the first harvest). The liberation treatment stimulated faster recovery of timber albeit at a carbon cost. Model results suggest a threshold logging intensity beyond which forests managed for timber and carbon derive few benefits from RIL, with recruitment and residual growth not sufficient to offset losses. Inclusion of the breakpoint at which carbon and timber gains outpaced postlogging mortality led to high predictive accuracy, including out-of-sample R2 values \u3e90%, and enabled inference on demographic changes postlogging. Our modeling framework is broadly applicable to studies that aim to quantify impacts of logging on forest recovery. Overall, we demonstrate that initial mortality drives variation in recovery rates, that the second harvest depends on old growth wood, and that timber intensification lowers carbon stocks

    The electronic structure of amorphous silica: A numerical study

    We present a computational study of the electronic properties of amorphous SiO2. The ionic configurations used are the ones generated by an earlier molecular dynamics simulations in which the system was cooled with different cooling rates from the liquid state to a glass, thus giving access to glass-like configurations with different degrees of disorder [Phys. Rev. B 54, 15808 (1996)]. The electronic structure is described by a tight-binding Hamiltonian. We study the influence of the degree of disorder on the density of states, the localization properties, the optical absorption, the nature of defects within the mobility gap, and on the fluctuations of the Madelung potential, where the disorder manifests itself most prominently. The experimentally observed mismatch between a photoconductivity threshold of 9 eV and the onset of the optical absorption around 7 eV is interpreted by the picture of eigenstates localized by potential energy fluctuations in a mobility gap of approximately 9 eV and a density of states that exhibits valence and conduction band tails which are, even in the absence of defects, deeply located within the former band gap.Comment: 21 pages of Latex, 5 eps figure

    Nut production in Bertholletia excelsa across a logged forest mosaic: implications for multiple forest use

    Although many examples of multiple-use forest management may be found in tropical smallholder systems, few studies provide empirical support for the integration of selective timber harvesting with non-timber forest product (NTFP) extraction. Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa, Lecythidaceae) is one of the world’s most economically-important NTFP species extracted almost entirely from natural forests across the Amazon Basin. An obligate out-crosser, Brazil nut flowers are pollinated by large-bodied bees, a process resulting in a hard round fruit that takes up to 14 months to mature. As many smallholders turn to the financial security provided by timber, Brazil nut fruits are increasingly being harvested in logged forests. We tested the influence of tree and stand-level covariates (distance to nearest cut stump and local logging intensity) on total nut production at the individual tree level in five recently logged Brazil nut concessions covering about 4000 ha of forest in Madre de Dios, Peru. Our field team accompanied Brazil nut harvesters during the traditional harvest period (January-April 2012 and January-April 2013) in order to collect data on fruit production. Three hundred and ninety-nine (approximately 80%) of the 499 trees included in this study were at least 100 m from the nearest cut stump, suggesting that concessionaires avoid logging near adult Brazil nut trees. Yet even for those trees on the edge of logging gaps, distance to nearest cut stump and local logging intensity did not have a statistically significant influence on Brazil nut production at the applied logging intensities (typically 1–2 timber trees removed per ha). In one concession where at least 4 trees ha-1 were removed, however, the logging intensity covariate resulted in a marginally significant (0.09) P value, highlighting a potential risk for a drop in nut production at higher intensities. While we do not suggest that logging activities should be completely avoided in Brazil nut rich forests, when a buffer zone cannot be observed, low logging intensities should be implemented. The sustainability of this integrated management system will ultimately depend on a complex series of socioeconomic and ecological interactions. Yet we submit that our study provides an important initial step in understanding the compatibility of timber harvesting with a high value NTFP, potentially allowing for diversification of forest use strategies in Amazonian Perù
