    STS in management education: connecting theory and practice

    This paper explores the value of science and technology studies (STS) to management education. The work draws on an ethnographic study of second year management undergraduates studying decision making. The nature and delivery of the decision making module is outlined and the value of STS is demonstrated in terms of both teaching method and module content. Three particular STS contributions are identified and described: the social construction of technological systems; actor network theory; and ontological politics. Affordances and sensibilities are identified for each contribution and a discussion is developed that illustrates how these versions of STS are put to use in management education.     Sustainable development is a commonly quoted goal for decision making and supports a large number of other discourses. Sustainability appraisal has a stated goal of supporting decision making for sustainable development. We suggest that the inherent flexibility of sustainability appraisal facilitates outcomes that often do not adhere to the three goals enshrined in most definitions of sustainable development: economic growth, environmental protection and enhancement, and the wellbeing of the human population. Current practice is for sustainable development to be disenfranchised through the interpretation of sustainability, whereby the best alternative is good enough even when unsustainable. Practitioners must carefully and transparently review the frameworks applied during sustainability appraisal to ensure that outcomes will meet the three goals, rather than focusing on a discourse that emphasises one or more goals at the expense of the other(s)

    STM induced hydrogen desorption via a hole resonance

    We report STM-induced desorption of H from Si(100)-H(2×1\times1) at negative sample bias. The desorption rate exhibits a power-law dependence on current and a maximum desorption rate at -7 V. The desorption is explained by vibrational heating of H due to inelastic scattering of tunneling holes with the Si-H 5σ\sigma hole resonance. The dependence of desorption rate on current and bias is analyzed using a novel approach for calculating inelastic scattering, which includes the effect of the electric field between tip and sample. We show that the maximum desorption rate at -7 V is due to a maximum fraction of inelastically scattered electrons at the onset of the field emission regime.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures.     The three species monomer-monomer model: A mean-field analysis and Monte Carlo study

    We study the phase diagram and critical behavior of a one dimensional three species monomer-monomer surface reaction model. Static Monte Carlo simulations show a phase diagram consisting of a reactive steady state bordered by three equivalent unreactive phases where the surface is saturated with one monomer species. The transitions from the reactive to saturated phases are all continuous, while the transitions between poisoned phases are first-order, with bicritical points where the reactive phase meets two poisoned phases. A mean-field cluster analysis predicts all of the qualitative features of the phase diagram only when correlations up to triplets of adjacent sites are included. Dynamic Monte Carlo simulations show that the transition from the reactive to a saturated phase show critical behavior in the directed percolation universality class, while the bicritical point shows critical behavior in the even branching annihilating random walk class.     Computing the first eigenpair of the p-Laplacian via inverse iteration of sublinear supersolutions

    We introduce an iterative method for computing the first eigenpair (λp,ep)(\lambda_{p},e_{p}) for the pp-Laplacian operator with homogeneous Dirichlet data as the limit of (μq,uq)(\mu_{q,}u_{q}) as qpq\rightarrow p^{-}, where uqu_{q} is the positive solution of the sublinear Lane-Emden equation Δpuq=μquqq1-\Delta_{p}u_{q}=\mu_{q}u_{q}^{q-1} with same boundary data. The method is shown to work for any smooth, bounded domain. Solutions to the Lane-Emden problem are obtained through inverse iteration of a super-solution which is derived from the solution to the torsional creep problem. Convergence of uqu_{q} to epe_{p} is in the C1C^{1}-norm and the rate of convergence of μq\mu_{q} to λp\lambda_{p} is at least O(pq)O(p-q).     The institutional shaping of management: in the tracks of English individualism

    Globalisation raises important questions about the shaping of economic action by cultural factors. This article explores the formation of what is seen by some as a prime influence on the formation of British management: individualism. Drawing on a range of historical sources, it argues for a comparative approach. In this case, the primary comparison drawn is between England and Scotland. The contention is that there is a systemic approach to authority in Scotland that can be contrasted to a personal approach in England. An examination of the careers of a number of Scottish pioneers of management suggests the roots of this systemic approach in practices of church governance. Ultimately this systemic approach was to take a secondary role to the personal approach engendered by institutions like the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, but it found more success in the different institutional context of the USA. The complexities of dealing with historical evidence are stressed, as is the value of taking a comparative approach. In this case this indicates a need to take religious practice as seriously as religious belief as a source of transferable practice. The article suggests that management should not be seen as a simple response to economic imperatives, but as shaped by the social and cultural context from which it emerges

    The employee as 'Dish of the Day’:human resource management and the ethics of consumption

    This article examines the ethical implications of the growing integration of consumption into the heart of the employment relationship. Human resource management (HRM) practices increasingly draw upon the values and practices of consumption, constructing employees as the ‘consumers’ of ‘cafeteria-style’ benefits and development opportunities. However, at the same time employees are expected to market themselves as items to be consumed on a corporate menu. In relation to this simultaneous position of consumer/consumed, the employee is expected to actively engage in the commodification of themselves, performing an appropriate organizational identity as a necessary part of being a successful employee. This article argues that the relationship between HRM and the simultaneously consuming/consumed employee affects the conditions of possibility for ethical relations within organizational life. It is argued that the underlying ‘ethos’ for the integration of consumption values into HRM practices encourages a self-reflecting, self-absorbed subject, drawing upon a narrow view of individualised autonomy and choice. Referring to Levinas’ perspective that the primary ethical relation is that of responsibility and openness to the Other, it is concluded that these HRM practices affect the possibility for ethical being
