John Dewey's Radical Logic: The Function of the Qualitative in Thinking

    Get PDF
In his later works, John Dewey questioned some of the traditional assumptions about the nature and function of the qualitative in inquiry. Dewey foresaw what recent scientific accounts of human thinking are confirming: it is more complex, less linear, more emotional, affective, bodily-based, non-reflective, non-linguistic, non-conscious than philosophers have assumed. Commentators on Dewey have emphasized how inquiry is social, instrumental, and experimental, but for the most part have neglected the qualitative dimension of inquiry. The first section of this essay outlines the different forms that the neglect of the qualitative has taken in Dewey scholarship. The second addresses what Dewey means by the qualitative. The third presents nine specific functions the qualitative has on thinking (inquiry). The essay concludes in the fourth section with some implications of the view presented on the normative dimension of Dewey’s philosophy, and suggests which promising future inquiries remain open regarding the function of the qualitative in inquiry. In his later works, John Dewey questioned some of the traditional assumptions about the nature and function of the qualitative in inquiry. The definitive Version of Record was published inACM Transactions on Mathematical Software. Volume 49, Issue 1, https://doi.org/10.1145/3573383The minimum distance of a linear code is a key concept in information theory. Therefore, the time required by its computation is very important to many problems in this area. In this article, we introduce a family of implementations of the Brouwer–Zimmermann algorithm for distributed-memory architectures for computing the minimum distance of a random linear code over 2. Both current commercial and public-domain software only work on either unicore architectures or shared-memory architectures, which are limited in the number of cores/processors employed in the computation. Our implementations focus on distributed-memory architectures, thus being able to employ hundreds or even thousands of cores in the computation of the minimum distance. Our experimental results show that our implementations are much faster, even up to several orders of magnitude, than current implementations widely used nowadays. The authors would like to thank the University of Alicante for granting access to the ua cluster. Carrier Frequency Offset Compensation for OFDMA Systems Using Circular Banded Matrices

    Get PDF
Orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) is a multiuser communication technique that allocates to each user a set of orthogonal carriers. In the presence of carrier frequency offset (CFO) the orthogonality among carriers is lost and it is impossible to recover the information of the users without CFO compensation. The resulting multiple access interference (MAI) can be described as an interference matrix of large dimensions. In order to compensate for the CFO, this matrix must be inverted, what is computationally complex. Therefore, a banded matrix approximation is usually introduced. In this paper we propose a circular banded matrix which is a better approximation to the actual interference matrix. Also, by means of numerical simulation, we show that neither banded nor circular banded matrices approximations work well for normalized CFO close to 0.5.Fil: González, Gustavo José. Applications of analysis of systems as an independent science

This paper summarizes research that has been done with systems as research object. It has been defined the concept of “system” and other fundamental concepts of system analysis. The relationships between these concepts has been formulated in the form of axioms, and based on these axioms, the general theory of systems was developed as a particular case of the L theory of calculus of statements. Finally, from the analysis of these studies, we can conclude that: it is possible to apply system analysis to any type of organisation, which is investigated by other branch of science, since system analysis is an independent branch of science.Eje: Inteligencia artificial distribuida, aspectos teóricos de la inteligencia artificial y teoría de computaciónRed de Universidades con Carreras en Informática (RedUNCI
