The modulation of SiO maser polarization by Jovian planets
Searching for planets in the atmosphere of AGB stars is difficult, due to
confusion with the stellar wind and pulsations. The aim here is to provide a
complementary strategy for planet search in such a dense environment. The
polarization properties of SiO masers, especially their circular polarization,
are, under certain conditions, good tracers for rapid magnetospheric events. A
Jovian planet with a magnetosphere whose dipole axis is misaligned with its
rotation axis, naturally provides such conditions. Here I present several
models showing that the polarization will be periodically modulated.
Single-dish monitoring with a sufficiently dense time sampling and a carefully
calibrated polarimeter, in combination with VLBI observations, are suited to
detect and locate a periodic modulation of the circular maser polarization due
to a precessing Jovian magnetosphere. The phenomenon will be rare, because a
favourable arrangement of maser and magnetosphere is needed, otherwise the
polarization may be below the detection threshold, especially if the maser is
unsaturated. Linear polarization, though exhibiting a qualitatively similar
modulation, is likely to suffer more from confusion due to beam dilution, even
in VLBI observations
Convergence towards a European strategic culture? A constructivist framework for explaining changing norms.
The article contributes to the debate about the emergence of a European strategic culture to underpin a European Security and Defence Policy. Noting both conceptual and empirical weaknesses in the literature, the article disaggregates the concept of strategic culture and focuses on four types of norms concerning the means and ends for the use of force. The study argues that national strategic cultures are less resistant to change than commonly thought and that they have been subject to three types of learning pressures since 1989: changing threat perceptions, institutional socialization, and mediatized crisis learning. The combined effect of these mechanisms would be a process of convergence with regard to strategic norms prevalent in current EU countries. If the outlined hypotheses can be substantiated by further research the implications for ESDP are positive, especially if the EU acts cautiously in those cases which involve norms that are not yet sufficiently shared across countries
Response and Acquired Resistance to Everolimus in Anaplastic Thyroid Cancer
Everolimus, an inhibitor of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), is effective in treating tumors harboring alterations in the mTOR pathway. Mechanisms of resistance to everolimus remain undefined. Resistance developed in a patient with metastatic anaplastic thyroid carcinoma after an extraordinary 18-month response. Whole-exome sequencing of pretreatment and drug-resistant tumors revealed a nonsense mutation in TSC2, a negative regulator of mTOR, suggesting a mechanism for exquisite sensitivity to everolimus. The resistant tumor also harbored a mutation in MTOR that confers resistance to allosteric mTOR inhibition. The mutation remains sensitive to mTOR kinase inhibitors
Determination of the Michel Parameters and the tau Neutrino Helicity in tau Decay
Using the CLEO II detector at the storage ring CESR, we have
determined the Michel parameters , , and in decay as well as the tau neutrino helicity parameter
in decay. From a data sample of
tau pairs produced at , using events of
the topology and , and the determined sign of , the combined
result of the three samples is: , , , and
. The results are in agreement with
the Standard Model V-A interaction.Comment: 18 page postscript file, postscript file also available through

Observation of Two Narrow States Decaying into and
We report the first observation of two narrow charmed strange baryons
decaying to and , respectively, using data from
the CLEO II detector at CESR. We interpret the observed signals as the
and , the symmetric partners
of the well-established antisymmetric and .
The mass differences and
are measured to be and

Search for Lepton-Flavor-Violating Decays of B Mesons
We have searched a sample of 9.6 million BB-bar events for the
lepton-flavor-violating decays B --> h e^{+-} mu^{-+}, B^+ --> h^- e^+ e^+, B^+
--> h^- e^+ mu^+, and B^+ --> h^- mu^+ mu^+, where h is pi, K, rho, and
K*(892), a total of sixteen modes. We find no evidence for these decays, and
place 90% confidence level upper limits on their branching fractions that range
from 1.0 to 8.3 X 10^{-6}.Comment: 8 pages postscript, also available through

A Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry Parameters in \Xi_{c}^{0}\to \X^{-}\pi^{+}
Using the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring we have
measured the decay asymmetry parameter in the decay . We find , using the world average value of
we obtain . The physically allowed range of a decay
asymmetry parameter is . Our result prefers a negative value:
is at the 90% CL. The central value occupies the
middle of the theoretically expected range but is not yet precise enough to
choose between models.Comment: 10 pages postscript, also available through

First Observation of
We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays of the Upsilon(1S)
resonance collected with the CLEO-II detector operating at CESR. We present the
first observation of the radiative decays Upsilon(1S)->gamma pi+pi- and
Upsilon(1S)->gamma pi0pi0. For the dipion mass regime m(pipi)>1.0 GeV, we
obtain Br(Upsilon(1S)->gamma pi+pi-=(6.3+/-1.2+/-1.3) x 10^(-5), and
Br(Upsilon(1S)->gamma pi0pi0=(1.7+/-0.6+/-0.3) x 10^(-5). The observed gamma
pipi events are consistent with the hypothesis Upsilon(1S)->gamma f2(1270).Comment: 9 pages, postscript file also available through
